Hello, new user! Welcome to a new world of Zelda, one you make yourself!

Thank you for clicking into this thread, and congratulations on downloading Zelda Classic. If you've opened it up before, you might find it a little bit confusing. This is natural for beginners, but in time you'll be able to find and do pretty much exactly what you want like second nature.

This is but a series of threads simplifying the process and improving your performance, but I can still start you off from here by explaining how to set everything up in a few easy steps. Follow these before you start tearing into the programs, or you'll be stuck with no idea what is what, like a deer in the headlight beams.

1: Make sure your download came with Zquest. Some versions of ZC do not include Zquest as a part of the download. Zquest is the entire tool for constructing and arranging elements into a playable quest, and without it, all you can do is play other people's quests. check where you download from: if it says Zquest is not included, find another one that does include it. And make sure you have the right operating system as well.

2: Set Zelda Classic up to run custom quests. There is a sticky thread located above this one that explains this process in greater detail, but in short: if you are using any version of Zelda Classic below 2.10, this step should apply to you. Ignore it if you use 2.10.

3: Download the Zelda Classic Launcher by Sean. This step is optional, but highly recommended, especially since Zelda Classic does not have an option to work in a small windowed screen (very important to have in editing), and versions of Zquest below 2.10 do not have this option (also important for the same reasons.) Without it, you'll have to constantly hit the window key to get away from either of them, and especially in the case of these threads, that isn't cool. Look for his latest version on AGN, or ask him if you can't find it, and he'll be glad to show you.

...these steps taken, you should now be able to quickly and easily access Zelda Classic and Zquest. It is important to do this right away before opening ZC or Zquest to save you a lot of time and money(?). Even if you don't expect to be accessing Zelda Classic or Zquest much, follow these steps. I assure you, you'll need convenient access to them.

*There is no charge for either program or for any board assistance, though a premium membership is available on this board if you so desire. It is unlikely you'll need it to succeed with ZC, though.

Let's get started.
