I've recently gotten into these (since my roommate reinspired my love of Monkey Island), and now I'm trying to look for other games like this. I don't really want to pay for them, and I can't find any. Are there any good ones that I should look for (there are some ones that my brother used to play, but I know so little about them that it would be impossible to tell unless I played the game).

I do know that one of them was about a girl on a boat who traveled in time and I know that one of the areas had a small boat that needed repair and another you had to steal clothes from some girl. Are there any ideas for this one?

Dune

The Legend of Kyrandia, and subsequently The Legend of Kyrandia: Hand of Fate and The Legend of Kyrandia: Malcolm's Revenge.

Check abandonware sites.
Enjoy.

Wow that was fast. Are there any other games that use the same engine as Monkey Island 1 & 2 and that one Indiana Jones game?

I'm pretty sure that Maniac Mansion and Day of the Tentacle run on a similar engine. I'm not totally positive though.

Kings Quest games were cool too.

There's always Yahtzee's Chzo mythos series, which starts with 5 Days A Stranger (http://www.fullyramblomatic.com/5days/). Oh, and Beneath A Steel Sky is freeware nowadays, so definitely grab that one.

Kyrandia: Fables and Fiends
Kyrandia: The Hand of Fate
Kyrandia: Malcolm's Revenge
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
Secret of Monkey Island (and probably the sequels; haven't played them but I'm sure they are good too)
Maniac Mansion
Maniac Mansion: Day of the Tentacle
King's Quest 5 or 6 (the rest are pretty much trash)
... I'm probably forgetting some now..

Dune wasn't exactly a graphical adventure but it was fun as hell. Sort of a combination RPG, RTS thing... It had RPG elements but you also harvested Spice and could send the Fremen to attack stuff and conquer it for your use. You know, that is when Jessica isn't saying "I wonder what the proximity of the Spice can do to you Paul" over and over and over :D

Edit: Some more:
Loom (bizarre but fun)
Grim Fandango (have never played it but everyone seems to like it)
Star Trek: 25th Anniversary (ALL of the original voice cast if you had the CD-Rom, awesome, awesome game)
Star Trek: A Final Unity (same concept, but with TNG crew)

Let's not forget Sam & Max Hit the Road.

Can happily and most readily confirm most of the above, specifically the entire Monkey Island series, Kyrandia, (Particularly #2, Hourglass of Fate. It has never left my memory, not after three quarters or so of a double decade. :D )

I believe that some of the Star Trek P&C Adventures had some ship combat as well.

Space Quest was awesome as well. Quest for Glory, I think, are the most memorable of the aforementioned series'. They're not just point and click. They're extraordinarily deep and involving. QFG5 topped it all off with more attention to detail than I could've ever think possible.

All of the games on this page (http://www.scummvm.org/compatibility.php) are all compatible with the ported game engine ScummVM (http://www.scummvm.org/). This is a great engine; it was ported to a ton of different operating systems, including that of PSP and Nintendo DS.

Wow, thanks for all the help everyone. Now I just need to fix my laptop so that I can get all of my games on there.

Though it is comprised of levels instead of one big world, Zack & Wiki for the Wii is an excellent adventure/puzzle game. Check out my thread: http://www.armageddongames.net/forums/showthread.php?t=99977

Yeah Kyrandia is definately my all-time favorite GA series. It's hard to decide which one is the best. I think #2 is probably the most interesting, but it's also the easiest by far. #1 is awesome though, and #3 is decent, though perhaps uses 3d-rendered graphics a bit too much for my tastes :P (it was all the rage in the 90s :D)

But ya, if you need proof of how awesome Kyrandia is, the intro:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=-S4N8SfzBnE
http://youtube.com/watch?v=HhihizavDPc
The first video is a bit laggy.. second one is worse but has speech and way better audio.

Also, from Kyrandia 2:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=DVlCHDTZ6ek
also really laggy.. but hmm, it loses some impact with speech added :D

Might as well round it out with Kyrandia 3:

:D

Edit: Oh my god:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=xalNCn9jgF4

I think that is the whole game! hahaha.. the color depth seems worse but otherwise the quality is really good for a youtube video.

BTW, getting to the lake before the final castle and using Wisp power to try and cross = hilariously awesome. A huge whale comes up and eats you :D

Edit 2: Another one for Indiana Jones:

There are modern episodic point and click Sam & Max adventure games being released by Telltale Games on Gametap and Steam. Episode 4 is currently avalible for free.

General Consensus on them is that they're not as timeless as S&M: Hit the Road, but they're still pretty good.

The underdogs have a certain Home whose list of top adventure games has not disappointed me in the past.

Oh! Would that I had been aware of this thread earlier! (Too much Qi, methinks.)

Pretty much any adventure game from Lucasarts will put you on a very good start. The list:

Labyrinth - Hard to track down and often forgotten, but an impressive first foray into the genre by Lucasfilm, as they were back then.
Maniac Mansion - Regarded by many as their first 'proper' adventure game. Was remade a couple of years ago by a group of fans, downloadable from here (http://new.bigbluecup.com/games.php?action=detail&id=401). and much recommended.
Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders - Hard to track down, but much loved by many. This received a fan sequel which you can grab here (http://new.bigbluecup.com/games.php?action=detail&id=40).
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade: The Graphic Adventure - Also tricky to track down, but a pretty faithful adaptation of the film.
Loom - Ask me about LoomTM.
The Secret of Monkey Island - Honestly needs no introduction.
Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge - Snap.
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis - Quite possibly the best Indiana Jones game ever, with a choice of three paths - Fists, Wits or Teamwork. All are great.
Maniac Mansion: Day of the Tentacle - A fantastic sequel that even included the original Maniac Mansion (use the computer in Eddie's room). Utterly hilarious.
Sam & Max Hit the Road - Play it. Play it right now.
Full Throttle - Has a problematic fighting sequence (which is easily overcome by picking up the yellow fertilizer and throwing it in the face of the woman with the chainsaw, a feat I discovered after much tearing out of hair) but this is instantly forgotten, if only for the Ride of the Valkyries.
The Dig - Based on a script by Steven Spielberg, I really enjoyed this and would quite happily recommend it. Has a few issues, but is a seriously playable game.
The Curse of Monkey Island - As above. This time with voices!
Grim Fandango - If you can get it working, give this a whirl. I've had nothing but problems for some reason. But it's actually a really good game, and fully recommended.
Escape from Monkey Island - As above. This time in 3D!

There are other games from the days of ore you should also look into. The Legend of Kyrandia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legend_Of_Kyrandia) series is a good trilogy, if hard in places (you can, and will, die in these games) and the King's Quest series (remakes of the first three located here (http://new.bigbluecup.com/games.php?action=detail&id=36), here (http://new.bigbluecup.com/games.php?action=detail&id=144) and here (http://new.bigbluecup.com/games.php?action=detail&id=734)).

Games made using AGS (Adventure Game Studio) are plentiful and should keep you going for as long as need be. I won't list them all, only some of my favourites: A Tale of Two Kingdoms (http://new.bigbluecup.com/games.php?action=detail&id=905), Da New Guys (http://new.bigbluecup.com/games.php?action=detail&id=581), Perils of Poom (http://new.bigbluecup.com/games.php?action=detail&id=318), Grr! Bearly Sane (http://new.bigbluecup.com/games.php?action=detail&id=315) and the Ben Jordan (http://new.bigbluecup.com/games.php?action=detail&id=760) series, which is actually where I got the surname for my own PI, Daniel Jordan. It's a sort of homage, as opposed to out-right theft. Other AGS games can be found here (http://new.bigbluecup.com/games.php).

Other, modern adventure games you should also consider trying are the Broken Sword (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broken_Sword) series, the new Sam & Max (http://www.telltalegames.com/samandmax/) games, The Longest Journey (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Longest_Journey) series, the Chzo Mythos (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CHZO) (also known as the 5 Days series, although Chzo is the author's intended title) and, to be honest, anything by Ben 'Yahtzee' Croshaw, who also does the utterly hilarious Zero Punctuation (http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/editorials/zeropunctuation) game reviews. You can find his site here (http://www.fullyramblomatic.com/games.htm).

That should get you started. Let me know if you need more sometime in 2009.
