So I am about to try out this like...I guess you would call it a game? I'm sure some of you have heard of it and whatnot. It seems interesting. Does anyone else on here use it at all? If so, it'd be really cool to interact! If you are on there, are plan to get up on there, my name on there is Solomon Chesnokov. If you already have checked it out, what's it like, is it cool or is it a waste of time?
Oh, and if you would like to check it out, go here to check it out: Second Life (http://www.secondlife.com).

I've heard of it, as I know someone personally that is on it quite frequently.

On the one hand, the creative possibilities seem interesting since you can render or play/be nearly anything (for instance, if I played and knew how to script I could relatively easily look very much like Otohime Mutsumi, once I figured out a good way to design a decent anime head); and it looks to be a fairly massive community. On the other hand, massive communities can be bad things, and it doesn't look to be so much a game for the most part as a glorified, 3D rendered giant IRC channel, where people just talk or do random things (although that could be interesting in it's own right I guess).

The size of the community, the insane possibilities of how much "griefers" can screw up your experience, the obsessive escapist obsessiveness the one person I know seems to get into it with, and the time-vampirizing of having to learn to script and worrying about making in-game money are what keep me away at this time. However, I do think it's got some interesting potential.

I also have this lurking paranoia of any MMO that people play en masse. Like that one episode of Star Trek TNG where everyone but Wesley gets addicted to this virtual game headset thing that is in fact controlling their actions and trying to absorb all life into playing it XD The only MMO I actually play right now is a Ragnarok Online private server, and I tend to play that quite casually, sometimes going weeks between playing. It's fun and I love the graphics (it's like what Dragon Quest VII and subsequent PSX/DS remakes have tried to do, only nicer, and the anime stylings look great), but I also enjoy the simplicity and lack of commitment/investment I feel in it such that I don't spend too much time on it when I should be doing other things. *shrugs*

Too bad that all that time I save winds up being spent with me veging out between 1-5AM doing nothing (or at best, watching something, like Adult Swim or Andromeda- all of the good episodes of which, read: Season 1 and early Season 2, I've likely seen before multiple times, and most of the rest of the show isn't nearly as good and can indeed be stupid- or old Transformers cartoons, which I enjoy but are pretty simplistic and again, not the most mentally-engaging content for me) when I should either be drawing, showering, making something, or sleeping. Such is depression and bad habits. But hey, I always get to work on time and do apparently a decent job! That's a plus.

Planning on giving Second Life a try? Don't, seriously. (http://www.encyclopediadramatica.com/Second_Life)

Unless of course you enjoy furry sex and spending virtual linden dollars (which you buy with real money) on virtual fursuits for your avatar.

Or if you enjoy the thought of being raped by unicorns. (http://www.secondlifeherald.com/slh/2007/09/afternoon-delig.html).

Yeah. I just kinda gave up on it because it crashes when it is starting up. So I am not even going to play it. Time to uninstall it off my computer! YAY! Well...if anyone else DOES get it and plays it, let us know in here how frequently you get raped by unicorns I guess?

Yeah, Second Life really never appealed to me for two reasons:

#1.) No real objective or goal. It's almost like a glorified AIM. I'll play a select few MMORPGs, just because I can become a certain class, gain levels, and kill stuff. If I want to just talk to other people, I'll do it via instant messaging.

#2.) There's a rather large concentration of Internet weirdos in SL. I've known people who gave SL a try, but stopped due to them getting a bunch of cyber sex requests. :/

Honestly, I think that's why it's so popular :P

Though I will never understand how people can throw real money into that game. Why the hell would you want to buy a stupid "virtual shirt" (or whatever) with real money?

Warlock, because. Didn't you know? Virtual shirts are all the rage these days. THEY NEVER WEAR AWAY. They're VIRTUAL. Ha ha. Seriously though, I'd rather buy a real-life shirt. Easy. Even if it wears away.

As I understand it, given that you can make/script your own stuff in Second Life, it's not necessary to spend any real money onesself; you can actually make some money. And it's apparently somehow possible to transfer that back into real money. Of course, I imagine it's extremely hard to do in useful quantities, but it is kind of interesting to think about.

I might have more of an interest in SL if it seemed to have more of an "anime community", but I've never heard of such a thing. All I hear about are humans, furries, and the stray videogame character or Transformer.

But besides that, the griefers thing and general feel of the program, and the extreme effort required to use it, and the way a lot of people seem to regard it all makes me leery.

Maybe eventually. I think this sort of program has potential, since it's basically a crude virtual reality; it just needs better development, moderation, possibly competition. I don't feel like there's much room for casual interest in it, and it seems a bit shunted off into it's own little cult right now, and I don't feel so comfortable about it.

What I was going to say when I saw this thread. Second life would be a great place to piss people off who take the internet much too seriously. The whole scripting thing turned me off. I've seen some funny assed shit done, though.

I read about this once in a magazine on an airplane. I've heard that if you try checking it out, it devours you. Like, even more powerfully than WoW. In fact, I read about people who got into it and might as well have disappeared off the face of the physical earth.

Meh. If I wanted to do something like this, I'd do the multiplayer in Warcraft III. At least there you get treasure and notoriety for kicking gnoll and hobgoblin ass.
