I have the ambition of porting the NES Kirby's Adventure to the PC and creating a level editor. Since Zelda Classic is a perfect example of this sort of project, I am interested in how Phantom Menace understood and coded the game.

I am thinking that either:
1. Phantom Menace disassembled/hacked the original ROM and rebuilt the source code as a port.
OR
2. Phantom Menace simply used his knowledge of the game and programming skills to recreate the games mechanics (enemy behavior, Link's movement, etc...) as accurately as possible.

Does anyone know how ZC's engine was built? More specifically, how was the information necessary to recreate The Legend of Zelda obtained?
