Stephen Colbert, the host of The Colbert Report has announced that he will run in South Carolina primary as a Republican, Democrat, and Favorite Son. What do you think?

Also, does anyone know if he is running as himself or his character on the show?

It appears he'll be running as his character.

This is a pretty funny opinion piece he wrote (in character) about the possibility of running.

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/10/14/opinion/14dowd.html?_r=2&n=Top/Reference/Times%20Topics/People/C/Colbert,%20Stephen&oref=slogin&oref=slogin

And this article has some more information about the buildup to the announcement.

There is something disturbing in the second article though, namely the fact that to get on the democratic ticket it only costs $2,500 but to run as a Republican it would cost $35,000. I like this quote from the South Carolina Republican Chairman:

"The great thing about America,” Mr. Dawson said, “is, if you can meet the constitutional requirements to run for president of the United States, you can do so."

What he really means is you can run if you meet all the requirements and give his party $35,000....

I'm sure he's running as his character on the show. The Colbert Report loves breaking the barrier between television and "real life" (wrist strong bracelets, for example). It's a fairly safe thing to do, as well, since the odds of Colbert actually winning are slim to none. Although if he DID, that would be roughly the best thing ever.

EDIT: Dammit, paully, you were faster than I was. Hold still while I plunge this spoon into your unsuspecting eyeball.

You have got to be kidding me.
Man, wouldn't it be wierd if he actually ran in all seriousness, rather than just making a statement/scene like this. I'm reminded of "Man of the Year"

Man of the Year is strongly based off of Steven Colbert and John Stewart's characters on their respective shows..

I wonder what is worse... pointing out that the Presidency is a joke or running as a joke?

Finally, someone I wouldn't feel dirty voting for. Seriously, I just hate politicians in general. I know, I'm horribly prejudiced, but I think they're all a bunch of lying, dirtbag crooks. They're all just far more concerned with being reelected than they are with serving the people and doing the right thing.

Anyway, rant aside, I think it's the most awesome thing ever. COLBERT '08!

Personally, I couldn't care less who's running for Prezy. Sure it would be interesting to see a reall "Man of the Year" thing happen, but the odds are not in favor of it happening.

This is completely awesome although I'm pretty sure I don't agree with either his character or his real stance on issues. Colbert seems to know exactly the right ways to create comedy gold out of any situation.

>_> agreed. One of the requirements to being a politician is to be corrupt. If yiou truly want to help the people, no political party will ever let you join. I suppose you could make your own, but... >_> It's hard getting the money for that, if you're not corrupt.

And I have no clue who colbert is, but... whatever! Vote him in!

[a bit off topic]while we're talking about presidential jokes, I remember someone (Sir_johnamus, I believe) had *Lloyd for president* as his avatar.

seeing as how I'll probably never get another chance to say what I thought about it, I'll just say it here:

"Lloyd for President! Sheena for first lady! And what the heck! Give us give us Kratos as prime minister!!"

For those who aren't familiar with Stephen Colbert:

Remember, he is acting when he does his show, so it's hard to know who would be elected, him or his character on the show.

Colbert is not going to vote against his conscious on issues so he'd likely vote on his real opinions. This doesn't matter though since I doubt he's going to be elected.

A sad update on this: it seems the SC Democratic party voted to keep Colbert off the ballot.

I don't think it's fair to dismiss him because you think he's just forwarding a comedy routine... I think he was making a point about how ridiculous the presidential elections are getting... and while it was comedy, and not a sincere effort to run, it was protest as well. I wish they would have been more honest, and just came out and said it's against their interests to let him stay on the ballot, rather than try to belittle him.
