How do you get a new custom darknut to change to shieldless once he takes a hit?

Maybe this should be moved into bugs as well, I have the shieldless darknut set in the "s" slot but it just won't show up, when the darknut takes 1 of his 2 hits he just becomes invisible.

After screwing with this for about 4 hours now and it still not working, I have to assume it's just another one of L's unfinished features, I'll post it in bugs and let it go.
