I can't seem to get past level one >_<

I have the Boomerang, the Map and the Compass. I've had one key, which I used to get into the room to the left of the entrance. I didn't get the key that the stalfos is holding, but I assumed that would be ok because it's behind a locked door already.

It sounds like you haven't found the raft yet. After you take the passageway to the second part of the level, make sure you push blocks in rooms as you go. You should find the raft and it will let you get access to the boss room.

Apparently I haven't found the passageway to the second part.

From the start, if you go left, up (look for a hidden key in a passage in this room - push blocks), and right you can push a block after killing the enemies in this room to find the passage.

I am at the same point in the game. I still don't have a sword. Should I have gotten it yet?

The clue when you got the candle was to look for a dead-end passage. If you go up and right from the starting screen, try burning around a bit to find a passage that will lead to the first sword.

I'm stuck in level 3 now. I've just got the map, and been to a room where it looks like I should need the ladder, but I can't see anywhere else to go.

If you got the map, try entering the middle room that is off the map. Either bomb or walk through the wall from the room above it (where you need to use the ladder). You will find a passage there with the ladder so you can continue.

General Hint: Several levels have hidden rooms off the map. If you get stuck start searching off the map too.

Where can I get a better shield? I just got to the Dark World, and Level 5 is just killing me not having one.

You actually missed it... in the Dark Temple, the passage between the Light and Dark worlds, there is a shield hidden under one of the bushes/trees in the level. You have to burn around to find it.

The problem is once you are in the Dark World, you can't get back into the temple unless you find the whistle first... which is conveniently hidden in level 5. If you can find the whistle, then you can go back and get it.

Also, did you find the blue ring yet? That could help too if you don't have it.

no, apparently I didn't find the blue ring either >_<

and I have to fight blue wizzrobes...

Well level 5 will prove a bit difficult then but if you are careful you can make it through. The whistle is hidden in the upper left area of the dungeon. I hope you at least found the letter so you can buy potions. That was also in the Light World.

As a note, once you get the whistle, make sure you also go back to level 4 (Tower of Hera, in the mountains) to hunt down that ring.
