:D Good for you Anthony! Glad to hear you've almost exited hell! The exit is juat a little bit further!

I don't believe evolution simply because I see more evidence for creation.

And on a side note...over 2000! ...Wow...I've lost that much of my life already?

I'm afraid to see Russ's response there, Aegix. I mean, on the one hand, we've got geology, genetics, the fossil record, astronomy, etc. ALL pointing to the same thing, and on the other hand, we've got... a gut feeling? Yet somehow that gut feeling trumps everything else?

Russ
01-30-2009, 07:36 PM
It's more than gut feeling. I'd try to explain, but it's really beyond explanation. It's like feeling your parents love when your a little kid, but 1,000 time more powerful.

And there's tons of evidence that I'm too lazy to post right now. Mabe after school, if I can get over this laziness streak I've been having.

And you propose we throw out 150 years of rigorous scientific inquiry in favor of this? You propose that this "feeling of love" be taught in science classrooms?

Russ
01-30-2009, 08:34 PM
NO! That's the point! You can't teach people to love God. It's a free will thing. You have to be willing to love him.

And did I ever propose to stop teaching evolution? It's a theory, just like any other one. I just think that the odds are against it.

In other words, it's a really STRONG gut feeling. I seeeeee...

Look, trusting your gut is perfeclty reasonable when dealing with day to day descisions (girlfriends and dropping nukes, not included). Intuition in the face of an imminent problem usually works with a reasonable amount of sucess. HOWEVER, when dealing with advanced theories, and science...intuition doesn't stand for anything. For a theory to be valid, it needs proof. Lots of it. So I'm sorrry Russ, but unless you're lazing around on a virtual megaton of evidence, then: Lots of proof for evolution > gut feeling that we all just poof'd here.

And WHAT, may I ask is so bad about evolution? Isn't it perfctly reasonable for you to consider that God ORCHESTRATED it? I mean...Why just conjure up a whole bunch of new species when you can just tweak and improve existing ones?

Even the mighty power of nature/the universe has its limits, ya know...

And Rock nog...here's a much more efficient method to killing brain cells. Go on 4chan, on /B/. Post there actively every day for a week, then report back here.

My neighbor received Settlers of Catan in the mail this past Wednesday, and we and a bunch of other guys have been playing for the past three days in a row. Has anyone else ever played this board game before? I think it's an interesting and unique game.

Settlers rocks. I play it with my sister once in a while. We each own a copy of the game, and what we've found to be really fun is to combine the pieces of our two sets and play Giant Catan. You need twice as many victory points to win, the longest road starts at ten segments, and so on and so forth. It's a blast.

This reminds me. One of my neighbors made up a new development card called the Barack Obama card. When drawn, the card is played immediately, and everyone places all their resource cards into a pile. This pile is then shuffled and distributed evenly amongst all the players. Oh, and it's worth one defeat point (-1) for whoever drew it.

You know what I find strange about God? A couple thousand years ago she was very active, and chatty with the people of earth; now she's nowhere to be seen and the only evidence she even exists is from the written records of those people God used to talk to. Why doesn't God talk to anyone anymore?

People are always claiming god talks to them. Just turn on the TV. There's bound to be 3 different evangelists desperately trying to warn you about their messages from god. My mom thinks god talks to her. Russell thinks god talks to him. Christians are always receiving telepathic messages from their invisible jewish zombie who is his own father.

Yeah, but back in the day, God seemed to make an effort to reach the nonbelievers. Nowadays, he seems to think a 2,000-year-old game of "telephone" should be good enough for us, and if any of us is skeptical in the least bit, rather than send us a sign to reassure us, he makes us burn in hell for all eternity.

...I don't know...I'd think the netherword is probably full to bursting with Prinnies by now, so it should really be the reverse... But then again, you can never have too many prinnies...

Also, back in the olden times, people didn't have any kind of science to explain anything, so they just latched onto ANYTHING unnatural, and claimed it was an act of God. Now, we can explain a good bunch of those unnatural things.

Either that, or humanity has gotten to the point where we are so beyond help that God has realized that no matter what happens, the majority of us are still gonna be insensitive jerks, and thus decided not to waste any more energy trying to turn us around. Wouldn't Blame Him/Her/It.

I'm impressed when it gets people I think are kind of obscure, but then disappointed when it doesn't get people of roughly equal obscurity. (He got Faris from FFV but couldn't get Charles Babbage, the father of the computer.) Sometimes it just asks the wrong questions. "Is he Polish?" "No." "How about Irish?" "No." "Swedish?" "NO." "Then he's from Bangladesh, right?" "NO." "Well then he's GOTTA be from Turkey." "No..." "Switzerland?" "NOOOO!! JUST ASK ME IF SHE'S FRENCH, DAMNIT!" "... Is he Polish?"

Still, it was fun when it got Dale Cooper from Twin Peaks. And when you answer questions as if to lead him to guess "God," he guesses "Allah," and the "photograph" of Allah is of a sunset over a tropical beach with the Arabic word for Allah written on the side. I liked that.

Wow. Dude. Totally wacked out nightmare liast night. Even though it got a bit hairy at times, it was still pretty awesome.

In my dream I was the leader of a small group of 3. Me, my brother, and a girl, who's name I can't recall, but I think it was Sara (she looked 14-16).

We were some kind of demon hunters, I guess. I know I was the "tank" (the guy who dishes out all the damage, and protects the others from getting hurt), Sara was our "tracker (she had a nose for sniffing out demons, and a gift for learning their weaknesses and traits real quick) an dmy brother was there for support (over headsets, giving us advice. Funny how quick kids think).

We were hunting some kind of vampire in the suburbs. Afte ran initial encounter, which I cna't quite remember, we tracked him down to my grandma's old house. After tring to eavesdrop on his conversation with a few lackeys, I got caught, and began to fight them. :P PK fire, thunder, Ice. It was great. Although I was worred that they weren't being much affected. I thundered their heads, they flinched but recovered immediately. I fired them, and they stumbled, and shook their heads dizzily, but showed no other sign of weakness. So I took a dramatic charging pose and screamed out "PK AWESOOOOME!!!". Although the air around me ripppled with power, and the enemies were shaking so much that they were blurring out, it wasn't havin ghte inteded effect (a giant awesome smiley coming over the horizon, or blasting out of me, and reducing them to dust).

At this point, I feaked. I called a retreat, and launched a quick PK ICE to slow them down. They barely flinched, and they didn't freeze either. At this point, the Vampire was REALLY pissed off, and chased me and Sara upstairs. I managed to find my grandma's old room (above the garage-turned-billiards-room), and I locked the door. Sara had barely managed to nick the enemies with her own spells, and she looked both worred and depressed. I shrugged, and suggested we get the hell out of there. Sara shook her head ans said "That's no ordinary vampire. He's a count! Once a count smells fresh blood, he'll remember it, and he'll know exactly where to find us! We can never escape!". About the same time as I swore violently, the vampire tried to turn the knob, and somehow the lock slipped. I managed to grab the handle, and I kept it closed, parying that he thought it was just locked and not being held shut. Sara then commented that we should just surrender and plead mercy. I knew it wouldn't happen.

My bro then came on over the headphones and told us to just get out, any way how. It was midafternoon, and vampires couldn't logically go out of a house in the sun. Trusting his odd kid logic, (and my sudden pissed off impulse at Sara), I let go of the handle to let the count ooen the door, and then slammed my weight against the door, causing him to stumble. I then grabbed Sara by the arim, ran to a window, blasting away the glass with a thunder, and then launched myself through it, taking the screen out too. After rolling off a slant in the roof (which isn't there IRL), we bonced onto the driveway safe. My bro then shouted to us to get going, before the vampire could see us, and know which way we were fleeing.

So we took off towards a bike path, where my bro was sitting with the headset. He gave us a thumbs up, and then went pale, yelling for us to run. I looked back to see one of those big walking robot-alien things form Moon walk out of the garage and start chasing us. That was fine by me, sinc ethose guy sare slow, and I was actually able to run properly (unlike in most escape dreams). We ran all the way back to my house, with the big guy in hot pursuit. My brother (a natural sprinter) made it waaay ahead of me. Sara turned another way, and I ran to my house, managing to close my garage door just soon enough that the vampire-in-alien-suit would not be sure which house was mine. I then bolted up to my room and dove under my covers.

I woke up (in the dream), with my brother running in the room, saying that Sara was betraying us to the vampire, he'd just heard it over the headset. I Looked seriously into his eyes, and asked him if he was sure, because if he was lying (he exaggerates a lot) I'd break his headset, and never let him help us again. Without hesitation, he swore he was telling the truth. I told him we'd raid the fuy's place again in a surprise attack, and tell Sara only when we were starting, so it'd throw everyone off balance and maybe give us an advantage. And I made sure we both had neck braces, and turtleneck sweaters to cover them, to protect against any surprise bites from our enemy .

As the two of us, gathered together a few odd bits of "equipment" to use (read: random objects I could use as weapons), my mom came to us and told us that a guy had just invited us all to his house. Somehow, I jus tknew it was the vampire's place. He'd found us out (probably due to Sara's interferance). we drove there, with a platry amount of equipment in the back , that we managed to sneak in. Then, when we got there, senor vampire was there to greet us personally (No cape and stuff this time, he almost loooked normal, and he made sure no one saw his fangs. that and it was raining, so he could go outside and not get burned). He invited us all inside for dinner, leaving me no time to get any equipment. My bro had his headset, and this toy handgun (I guess it had some kind of magic or boost to it), and I had a small spike thing mounted on a handle. Somehow, I got separated form everyone, and found myself at a et of stairs to the basement. Suddenly, I felt fangs try to sink into my neck, but they didn't penetrate, dur to my neck brace. I whipped around and tried to plunge my spike into the vampire's heart, but I took too long taking it out of my pocket, and he managed to grab it from me. He smiled and after a brief taunt, he locked me in the staircase.

I did a quick mental inventory, touching each object I had that could help. Neckbrace, Candy (for energy), a mini headphone piece that I had always used to contact my bro (who wasn't responding to me), and that was it. then, I saw somehting move in the basement, and I flattened myself on the wall. It passed, then came back around. For some weird reason, it was Samus, in a dark blue power suit, using her arm cannon as a flashlight. She flashed her light over me, and then demanded I come and face her. I ran downstairs, and put up my fingers in the position to use Thunder, and looked to see where she was. The las tthough I had before waking up was "Oh crap. I'm the tank, and I'm locked in the basement with evil Samus, while the vampire has my family who-knows-where, with only my younger bro there to help them, and he's never actually had any anti-demon combat experience, and I have no way to get to them to help them!!"

:P Semi-scary (but still cool) dream, and it led to some pretty interesting daydreams at work today. That, and I actaully considred writing some stories about us three demon hunters.

That reminds me, the other night, I had a dream that I was Nite Owl and Rorschach and I were taking down this crime lord who made his home on a floating island above New York. Obviously, I've been obsessing over Watchmen too much recently, but anyway, it was great fun, taking out his lackeys and such, until we actually fought the crime lord who deactivated the antigravity mechanism, causing the island to plunge toward NYC. Unfortunately, just as I was formulating a plan to deal with the situation, I woke up.

So I just beat the X missions on Trauma Center: Second Opinion. Those were hard. I think I was about to have a heart attack when I finished. Ironic. Anyways, I find it quite hilarious that I was greeted with the following message:

Congratulations! You just beat the cruelest operations ever devised! But remember, this is a game, and we do not advise you attempt surgery. Unless you happen to be a doctor, in which case, we advise you don't tell your patients how many tries it took you to beat a game about surgery.

I was cracking up reading it.

Those are nice trucks. When I bought my truck I was looking at getting a Colorado, which is what replaced those. Wound up getting a Silverado 1500 work truck though cause it was the same price as the colorado. They were trying to get rid of last year models.

I was looking at the Silverado but with as much commuting as I do between work, school and the fire station it wasn't worth the money. I really like the Colorado but I'll be getting a full size truck after I finish my paramedic training.

Now to stick some flashing lights in the window once it passes inspection. Being a volunteer firefighter is the best.

My Silverado only has a V6 in it and it gets rather decent mileage, something around 22-23. It also, since it's a work truck model, has a 32 gallon tank. This means that I fill up once every two to three weeks.

I think I might get it. Is it really good?

If you like 8-bit games, get it!

You get a Space invaders kinda game, a fun little series of platformers, a full out shooter (It's absolutely AWESOME!), a pair of racing games (those are a bit meh, I find), and a 10 hour 8-bit dragon quest spoof.

That and the game is totally hilarious. Self proclaimed game master Arino banishes you to the 80's (and turns you into a ten year old) with the promise that you will never go home unless you can beat all of the retro game challenges he gives you. The challenges are pretty fun to do as well (get to X level, stomp on 2 enemies without touching the ground, blow up a giant asteroid, etc).

That alone is good, but what REALLY makes the game for me is that you have a "buddy" on the bottom screen with you (who will cheer you on and make other comments as you play), and that every once in a while, he'll buy gaming magazines which have tips, cheats, and other info in them. this makes the game have an almost magical quality.

Despite the fact that I've pirated it, I'm thinking of buying the game too.

Dammit, there needs to be a site of something for us pirates to send money to the Devs if we feel a game is worth paying for! I don't want to have to buy the game to support them after I've already pirated it! :(

And speaking of which, it's a good year to have a DS. soooo many good games coming out! Phantasy star Zero, Shin Megami Tensai; devil survivor, Black Sigil... This year is gonna be awesome. : D

Russ

Yeah, like, even after I got my flashcart, I went out and legitimately bought Lock's Quest, because I wanted to support the developer, who've had two phenomenally innovative games, and the third looks absolutly incredible. Remember all the hype about Spore? That level of hype should follow their next game, Scribblenauts.

Look at the forum. (http://forums.penny-arcade.com/forumdisplay.php?f=12) Almost every single thread has at least 30 pages or something. My time would better spent reading an actual book. A lot of forums I find are like this. (i.e. my favorite author's website, website for a TV show I like, a philosophy-ish forum, I just can't win)

AGN is much more like a chat lounge because the signal to noise ratio is manageable by a human brain. I don't know how people interact socially at a site with like 50,000 users. I would only post at a site like that to get an answer to a question or something. Socially, however, everyone is faceless.

You know, this leads to an interesting theological question, I think. Perhaps the Bible was always intended as a work of fiction. Perhaps it is us who are misguided in thinking that it was meant to be taken literally. After all, as Russ said, fiction allows for better storytelling, and that's basically what the Bible is - storytelling.

Just looking at the gospels, there is a lot of evidence that the respective gospel writers took great liberties with whatever oral traditions about Jesus had existed before. Each gospel tells its own story, with its own moral, it's own take on the alleged events. It's possible that each of the gospel writers was simply trying to accurately recount the story of Jesus as he had heard it, but reading them, I get the distinct impression that the fact that each gospel has a unique twist on the story was at least in part a deliberate, conscious decision by the writers, who were more dedicated to telling a story the way they saw it rather than to accurately record historical events.

Russ

That had exactly the response I was hoping it would. Beldaran's not the only one that can quickly launch a topic towards a religious discussion. :)

Anyways, I'm not too much of an expert on the writing of the Bible, but wasn't Luke a historian? It seems unlikely that somebody dedicated to recording history would deliberately change the facts.

Shazza Dani

I think it's more likely that the Bible was meant to be taken literally. It's not like it was written in the 21st century; it was written before things could be explained by science, etc.

Anyways, I'm not too much of an expert on the writing of the Bible, but wasn't Luke a historian? It seems unlikely that somebody dedicated to recording history would deliberately change the facts.

Luke was a Physician. And there is no evidence to suggest that Luke, Matthew, Mark, or John wrote any of the gospels. In fact, there is evidence that they did not. I first heard about that evidence while reading an annotated bible, in which it was explained in the introduction that the gospels were likely written something like 100 years after Jesus' death, and they were compiled word of mouth accounts that included common elements from many apocalyptic cults of the time.

Then Constantine edited the hell out of the bible to help his government use christianity to control people's minds and make them obedient.

So basically that pile of papers you think is divinely inspired is really just the propaganda arm of the Roman Empire, derived from the contradictory ramblings of desert mystics.

That's correct, and what I was going to say - very little is known about the author of the gospel of Luke, and certainly nothing to suggest he was a historian. He was a gentile, he wrote the gospel decades after the death of Jesus, and he is also very probably the author of Acts as well. That's really all we know for sure.

None of the gospel writers were directly connected to the events of Jesus or the apostles, which, along with the narrative structure of the gospels, leads me conclude that they were written more to preserve the oral traditions in writing than they were intended to be a historical record of events. Perhaps other areas of the Bible were meant to be taken more literally, but I can't imagine the gospel writers, writing decades after Jesus' death and imposing their own interpretation on the alleged events of his life, had any illusions that what they were doing was meant to be interpreted literally.

Bel... can you get me the name of the annotated bible that you speak of? Or a link to the book so I can purchase it and read it? Please and thank you.

It's the Bible that Baylor uses for their Christian History course, which is required. I don't have mine anymore, but they sell them at the bookstore. Next time I'm over there, I'll check and see what the name is. I can't remember. It's like "The New Something Or Other Bible". It's got a red cover with big white letters.

Oh damn. Missed the discussion about books.

I don't read half as much as I used to, but I do enjoy a good book now and then. ...I am also currently suffering from "Pendragon Withdrawal Syndrome". It's agony waiting for the last book. I want to know how the whole massive catastrophy gets resolved!!

Had an awesome weekend, but a really shitty monday. On the weekend, I slept over with friends. We played Street fighter 4, took turns in mirros Edge, and in dead Space, all in glorious HD (wow...HD is awesome). We also played HOURS of custom robo. HOURS. ...Plus we drank bit, so you can imagine what it sounded like. XD.

Now, my monday.... Had gastro (stomach flu, I think) in the morning. Went into work, and it was terrible. An hour later, the boss told me to just go home, and not to risk contaminating anyone. That and I have an "immaculate attendance record" according to him, so he doesn't mind at all if I'm gone a day. Anyway, I made it home and was feeling a lot better by noon. So, to treat myself (and make myself feel better), I popped in Chrono Cross, which I'd bought at a GameBuzz near my work. ...it didn't work. So I pop out th eCd to see if it's dirty and...

Fakes. THEY GAVE ME FAKE CDs. They were just black plastic CD shaped disks with the label on them. I even checked to see if the black was a cover, but then I realised that not only was it actually plastic, the label had been just slapped on with glue! I swear, if I can go back to work tomorrow, I am gonna go back to that store and DEMAND a ****** explanation.

Oh, and for all of you who like platformers, but aren't easily freaked out: Eversion. Try it. Nao. Finished it in less thatn 2 hours, and it was awesome.

Agreed. I spent most of my time silently chanting under my breath "please not red, please not red.....Please go blue, please go blue....please go red, please go red...". It was probably my most hated level, with the possible exception of level 6.

Now level 7...THAT was really well done. Super had to get all the gems, but REALLY well done.

And it seems I MAY have blown a gasket over nothing. >_> How was I supposed to know that all PS1 disks were black? Anyway, a (trustworthy) friend at work offered to take a look at the CDs, and see if it really was a faulty disk, or if it was just my PS2.

The names look blue to me. A slightly lighter blue than the background. I guess I can see how it could look purple. I just think it looks more blue than purple. I dunno, after looking at the background while posting this I guess it is more purple; maybe a lavender.

Well, at any rate, it is definitely not gray.

Heh, Sean Connery makes me think of Highlander. My friends and I used to joke about how he's an Egyptian living in Spain, speaking English with a Scottish accent.

I didn't know you could even post blank posts.

"What kind of shushi did you make? Wash it the shpishy kind, or the kind with shalmon in it?"

I was several instants from invoking Godwin's law there, for a moment. Ick.

I have meself a Snow day! Huzzah. Of course, it's going to be well spent by doing homework.

Funnily enough, over this three and a half day weekend, I didn't have a lot of homework. Just one short English prompt. It's kinda weird, now that I think about it...

Does anyone else in AP classes notice that the teachers seem to get more lenient at that level? Both my AP Chem and Lit teachers usual response to "I don't have it, but it's at home" is "meh, whatever, just get it in over the next few days"

No, I really haven't noticed that. If I don't turn in my homework ontime for AP Biology, I get an automatic zero. :(

Heck, my AP Calculus teacher back in high school didn't even grade homework. He would just go over any problems that anyone had questions on. The catch to it all was, though, that if you didn't do the homework, you were pretty much guaranteed to bomb the test.

I think I've established something about my sleep paterns. The later I stay up, the stranger my dreams are. The other, night, I dreamt I was breaking into a castle guarded by ferocious guard goats. That was a strange dream.

That's pretty much how it works for Calculus 3 and Discrete Math at the college I'm attending. It wouldn't be so bad if the teacher wasn't making so many horrific mathematical mistakes in lecture.

I watched a few training videos at work the other day. (I've been working there for over four months now, and I still haven't seen all the videos.) They're typically pretty awesomely lame. Lousy acting + impossibly ideal scenarios + super-cloying-voiced presenters + an intro by Brookstone CEO Lou Mancini, who is possibly the worst speaker I've ever heard = PROFIT! Anyway, I bring this up because they used the Safety Dance as the "theme song" for their Workplace Safety video. Also, in their theft prevention videos, strangely enough, they use the overworld theme from Final Fantasy VIII—you know, the pizzicato one? Weird.

Dude, that's wacked, but the not weirdest I've heard of.

And modus Ponens...That's pretty damn funny. XD
