Sorry, yeah, SA-X. Been like a year since I played.

6000 posts.....wow, I'm not sure what that says.

man, the final Speed level in Sonic Unleashed is driving me nuts. Eggmanland has like a billion insta-death drops, and you get three lives, no exceptions. The rest of the game had hardly any, too...

Russ

I can't stand the extreme speed you need in some Sonic games. Whenever I get the chance, I slow down.

By the way, you were almost done with Fusion then. All that was left was beat SA-X, changing the directional settings (next room over), escaping to the ship (three minutes) and beating the escaped Omega Metroid (still counts as part of the time limit).

Finally, I'm back in my own apartment - after nearly a month of vacation. Sure, it's friggin' freezing here in Minnesota, but I have an actual bed to sleep in, as opposed to the couch, and now I can finally have a beer, because my parents don't believe in alcohol.

Russ

Sounds like you're having a good day.

Everything possible has gone wrong for me. I woke up and hit my head opening the door of my room. I tripped over a pile of junk in the hallway. The left mouse button on my computer broke. I got Wind Waker, but my Gamecube controller doesn't like it, and randomly throws me off ledges in the Forsaken Fortress. And to top it all of, my brother just came into my room and sat on hy homework assignment. Life is not going well for me today.

Of course it sounds like a good day - I left out how I forgot my keys at my parents' house and couldn't get ahold of my manager to get a spare set of keys so that I could actually get into my apartment until about 7:00, which really sucked seeing as how I arrived in Minnesota at about 3:30.

This may be the simplest physics question you've ever had.

When you are working with equations, how do you differentiate between power, pressure, and density? They all are basically the same symbol, but the one I'm having trouble with is pressure and trying to differentiate it from power. P and p look exactly the same.

It's standard practice amongst engineers to denote power as a 'W' with a dot above it, signifying that it is the derivative of work (which is what power is).

Density is rho, written more fluidly/curly than a regular 'p'.

So you have 'p', rho, and w dot.

I wonder what "time" is worth, monetarily. ... ... To charge a person money based on time invested in something, and then lost, ... I can't help but wonder how much that's worth, based on any number of variables, such as age, the quality and quantity of that time, and the subject by which the time had been lost, etc.

Then again, they could charge you yourself for the opportunity to expand the horizons of what your new found time could buy you. :p Lulz.

Doesn't the H refer to the fact that enthalpy measures heat?

The_Amaster
01-17-2009, 01:24 PM
Yeah, that's what I was taught, but than why not call it heat? I mean, I know there's some distinction, but it seems a tad finicky.

rock_nog
01-17-2009, 01:33 PM
Heat is simply the measure of the transfer of energy from one system to another. Thus, you can't measure the energy of a system with heat, because there is no heat if no energy is being transfered in or out of the system. Enthalpy is more a measure of the potential heat of a system.

The_Amaster
01-17-2009, 01:38 PM
But that's my point. It's just semantics. The only reason why we confine heat to only being an energy transfer is because that's the only way we can measure it.
It's like someone en just said "Well, we need a name for heat when it's not actually doing anything. Ummm, how about...enthalpy?"

Beldaran
01-17-2009, 01:50 PM

Well, you're the random internet dude. Clearly you know more than the physicists who pioneered thermodynamics.

rock_nog
01-17-2009, 01:52 PM
Well think of it like potential energy. Like, if I'm holding a ball two meters off the ground, technically, it doesn't actually have any energy. However, we can calculate how much energy it would have if I were to let it fall to the floor, and we call that potential energy. You can't just say the ball has x amount of energy, because that energy doesn't technically exist unless I let go of the ball, but at the same time, using a term to refer to that imaginary energy can be a useful tool in doing calculations.

Likewise, while enthalpy is related to heat, they are, in fact, different concepts, and it's useful for calculations to keep them separate.

The_Amaster
01-17-2009, 03:13 PM
Yeah, alright, I can see that.
it's still hard to grasp intuitivly though, which slows down my work sometimes.*shrug*

rock_nog
01-17-2009, 03:55 PM
It'd be a much more confusing concept if we used heat to refer to both the energy in a system and the amount of energy that transfers between systems.

The_Amaster
01-17-2009, 05:12 PM
Yeah, but for heat transfer we use Delta H, or change in enthalpy, anyway. So what's the point of heat?

Enthalpy is the energy within a system, and Delta H is the change, so where does heat fit in? That's the only part I'm confused about.

Bush got the oath right, and then mangled every single speech after that into language that would get a toddler put on the short bus.

Obama gets miscued by someone else during the oath, then delivers 4 years of actual English language.

I prefer the latter, even if he is going to treat our country like a giant credit card and engage in the amazingly stupid endeavor of fixing the economy by sucking all the money out of it and paying idiots to dig ditches and build pretty government projects, all the while printing and borrowing money to pay for it.

rock_nog
01-21-2009, 12:27 PM
Well, I think "spend money and cut taxes" is pretty much the default solution whenever the economy sucks, so it's not like Obama's course of action is unprecedented. Of course, who knows whether it'll actually work or not, but then again, it's not like anyone else has any better ideas, aside from "do nothing," and that's generally seen as an unpopular move.

Though I must say I really don't mind that made-up money being spent on infrastructure, whether it fixes the economy or not. I'm still pissed off about that collapsed-bridge fiasco we had here in the Twin Cities. The ultimate cause was basically determined to be that the bridge collapsed because the government was unwilling to actually spend any money to make sure that it was structurally sound.

rock_nog
01-21-2009, 01:43 PM
That's what I thought, that the real question was not over the tax cuts, but the spending, but like I said, if they actually spend the money on infrastructure, I'll be happy, because the whole bridge collapse thing pisses me off to no end. I mean, I get the whole "wasteful government spending is bad" thing, but you know, people shouldn't die because you're too friggin' cheap to pay for bridge maintenance.

Beldaran

Actually, Bush Sr. had a Democratic congress to contend with, and they're the ones who ultimately forced him to go back on his infamous "Read my lips, no new taxes" statement because they refused to cut back on spending, necessitating raising taxes to pay for all of their spending. We didn't get a Republican congress until '94. He used a Bible the first time.
The first time Roberts fucked it up, causing Obama to repeat the wrong words.
He didn't use a Bible the second time.
The second time he said the words correctly.

If you think that a person must say 36 words in the correct order while holding his or her hand on a really old book that may or may not mean something to him or her, in order to prove that he or she is truly committed to running the country, then you have your priorities way off course.

http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/ET_Cetera/Obama_first_Prez_to_use_Lincolns_Bible/articleshow/4008813.cms

It does not state anywhere that he 'went to such great lengths' to use President Lincolns bible, only that he is the first person to opt to do so. I daresay it would be just as easy for him to use that one as George Washingtons. He's the fucking president.

But pranks aren't all that bad. My high school had like...one big one a year, right at the end. One time, a whole class all brought water pistos and soaked the teacher and half the school. Then, the year after, there was a food fight started by some guys in their last year.

In my last year though, nthere was no pranks (unless you count that a bunch of guys used the straws and tapioka (SP?) balls from bubble tea that some students were selling, and used them as projectile lauchers this one time). My firends and I were THIS close to asking/bribing the secretary to go onthe PA on the last day and say, in her totally nromal voice "Please pay attention to this important announcement..." and then put "We Ain't gonna Take It" on the school PA for a bit. ...we never got around to it though. :(

Honors Sociology? AP Chemistry? Jeez, our school really just gives the meat and potatoes of a high school curriculum. Your typical maths, sciences, social sciences, Englishes, Spanish (I to IV), and French (I to IV). (Band, choir, art, business, etc.)

The only advanced classes we have are AP Calc, AP Lit, AP Language, and Honors Physics (okay, and symphonic band over concert band... and Madrigals for the choir folks). We actually do AP work in Honors Physics and Spanish IV, but they technically aren't AP courses.

Gee, you learn something new every day. Today I learned that the universe is 46.5 billion light years in radius. I really feel like I should've known that earlier, but I always figured that since it's 13.7 billion years old, that would make the radius of what we can see 13.7 billion light years. Turns out, I didn't take into account that the universe is constantly expanding - so things are now much farther away than they were when they gave off the light we see.

There may be absolute nothingness - no matter, not even empty space. Or, as Amaster pointed out, you may have to contend with the curvature of spacetime, which results in you being redirected to your original starting point. Or, as new evidence suggests, the edge of the universe could be made up of another universe entirely. Basically, the theory is that there are other universes out there, with their own big bangs, and that one of them has potentially collided with our own (seriously, this theory is based on actual data gathered about the universe). Who knows?

I love this thread. One post has me trying to grasp the complex nature of the universe and our theories about it, and the next has random humor.

But on the subject of universes, if there are multiple universes, why not just say theres opne universe with empty space in between? Wouldn't the universe simply be defined as "every thing that exists as we know it"?

Which brings up another question. If there are other universes, would they have different laws of physics? Would stuff that's impossible here be common there?

As you can see, I like looking at stuff from a hypothetical stand point. :D

Wow, I love that smily.

Yeah, other universes coule have very different physical laws. You should read Asimov's "The God's Themselves". It's all about a paralel universe where, just by fluke, the weak nuclear force is slightly stronger than in ours, and so the stars are rapidly exhausting their fuel and the inhabitents are desperatly trying to decide what to do.

But many of our inherent physical laws are simply a result of the particular way in which our big bang or whatever happened. If it was slightly different, we might have had four space dimensions to travel through, instead of just three.

Okay, so that was a dumb idea. But still, it would be fun to try sports at zero gravity.

Personally, I've always wanted to see low-gravity football. Ever since I was a kid, I've thought that football would be a lot more interesting with those big dudes flying through the air. I mean, it could totally change the game. You'd have a guy apparently cornered, but then suddenly leaping over the defense. Or you have a quarterback looking for an open receiver when he's suddenly sacked by a lineman diving in from above. Of course, there'd be a problem in that even a short pass would end up halfway down the field, but other than that, I think it'd be great.

I've always fantasized about—and now we're just talking about normal gravity on-Earth conditions again—large-scale Capture the Flag leagues, with differently laid-out playing fields in different cities around the country (or world), and teams traveling to play games and such. Capture the Flag is my favorite sport. I was the treasurer for WWU's CTF club for the one year that that club officially existed, and I played as often as I could. We talked to representatives from UW's CTF club (ironically, it included people I went to high school with—you remember Sean Naylor, Bel? ... I don't even think Beldaran reads this thread) about playing some intercollegiate games, but it never came together. Sigh... those were some of my favorite memories.

Anyway, zero-gravity CTF would be weird, but low-gravity CTF would be fucking rad.

I both remember Mr. Naylor and occasionally read this thread. :)

Of course, you wouldn't stay in zero gravity forever. Just long enough to play the game.

In my gym class, we play a game called continuos capture the flag. basically, there are three flags on each side, and you have to have all six on your side to win. The way the field is set up, there's a safe zone behind each side, where the flags are. When you run across the side to get there, you're safe until you touch the flag. Then you try to run it across, and you can pass it, but the reciever has to be on the same side.

I think that would be awesome to try in zero gravity. So many possibilities.

phattonez

Capture the Flag really isn't fun unless you can tackle the other side. That and the game just takes forever.

Russ

Our gym teacher also cam up with a solution. Standard games play in a gym divided into half like it would be if you were using it for basketball, or soccer, or some other sport. He splits it down the legth. So instead of:

oooo
oooo
oooo
oooo
lllllllllll
oooo
oooo
oooo
oooo

You have:
oooooooo
oooooooo
lllllllllllllllllllll
oooooooo
oooooooo

Makes it go a lot quicker.

One thing I hate about the DS is that the buttons are awkwardly positioned for GBA games, and you can't remap 'em. If I could use Y as B and B as A, I really wouldn't mind playing GBA games on my DS at all. And unfortunately my GBA died when my sister accidentally dropped it. Sorry, just thinking about the Wii GBA emulator.

I actually like the way the buttons are. I've got an M3 flash cart, and I've transferred all of my GBA games over to it. Well, not all (I have way too many), but all the good ones.

...I will agree only if the "waggle" is WELL FREAKING IMPLEMENTED!

Good examples:

Sonic Unleashed Speed levels: A perfect example! Just the right amount of motion use. Thumbs up!

Metriod prime 3: Another perfect set up!

trauma center: tight and functional. not as good as the DS controls, but stilll pretty good

A bad example:

Sonic Unleashed Werehog levels: ...UGH! I do NOT want to have to wave each arm like mad to pull off a basic combo! The only time it was totally warrented was for opening doors and pulling switches.

If you have a good balance, then the motion controls enhance the experience.

If there's too much, then it makes the whole thing a chore.

Oh so agreed, Aegix. After like, five minutes of the first Werehog level, I was like "No. NO! Screw this, I am plugging in my damn classic controller"

Interestingly enough, my favorite control scheme for Brawl(and in general) is Wiimote+Nunchuck. It's a lot like a Cube setup, but being able to keep my hands relaxed and down towards my sides feels a lot more comfortable than being huddled over a controller.

Seriously, Second Opinion has better controls than Under the Knife. The drain's a hassle to use on the DS, and the Wii controls just feel better.

While we're at, which do you think is better: Under the Knife or Second Opinion? I'd go for SO, because of better controls, better graphics, Guilt that doesn't look like a flaming bug or a sac of puss, and the added storyline.

I like Biology.

Today, we started experimenting with bacteria and DNA. The teacher got lots of E. Coli. Not the dealy kind, but a harmless version. Then we put a gene from jellyfish DNA that produces the protein that glows in the dark. Now I've got glow-in-the-dark E. Coli growing in my room.

The best part is when people ask what's in the container. "Oh, just some E. Coli I'm growing." People just stare. :D

There's more to Biology then evolution. Just look at a textbook. Generally, evolution gets one or two chapters out of 30. So does that mean if I don't believe in 1/30 of a subject, I don't believe in any of it?

Rejecting evolution and accepting biology is like rejecting mathematics and accepting physics.

You have to ignore what DNA is, how it works, the fossil record, biodiversity, observed cases of evolution... you basically have to pretend that biology is just a bunch of disconnected facts about "living stuff". Evolution is the glue that makes biology the amazing and explanatory science that it is.

rock_nog

Russ, Russ, Russ... Evolution is the framework on which the entire field of biology is built. Really, I think it's kind of a shame the way they teach it in high school, because they make it seem like something separate that you can ignore if you want, but then I guess even more parents would be up in arms if teachers started explaining evolution's role in the rest of biology.

At any rate, I don't see what your fixation with this is. Will believing in evolution suddenly cause you to lose faith in God? There are many religious people who have no problem with evolution. And seriously, what does it matter? What relevance does the Creation story have to religion? Does it somehow negate Jesus' teachings to say that life evolved over millions of years?

Beldaran, I find it interesting that you use "Biodiversity" as one of your examples of evolution. Creation seems to support that one more.

Anyways, evolution doesn't neccesarily refute Christianity. It all comes down to whether you believe Genesis is an acount on creation or a story to demonstrate God's power. I don't believe evolution simply because I see more evidence for creation.

Beldaran
01-30-2009, 01:51 PM
I find it interesting that you use "Biodiversity" as one of your examples of evolution. Creation seems to support that one more.

Except that "Creation" is not a scientific theory. It's just an emotional notion that somehow everything magically came out how you see it.

"Creation" doesn't explain anything. It just says, "This is the way things are. Try not to think too hard about how they might have gotten that way. It was magic."

Evolution perfectly explains biodiversity. Creation allows people to avoid thinking about how things got the way they are by assuming they have always been that way. It's dogmatic stupidity.

Just because an idea is easier to understand, does not lend it any scientific credibility. Quantum mechanics is almost impossible to understand and makes absolutely no intuitive sense to a lay person. However, quantum mechanics explains why things work the way they do. A better theory (in your opinion) would be "Magic Electron Theory". Electrons just work the way they work because God tells them where to go. That is a lot easier to understand. Unfortunately, not only is not even remotely correct, it's irrational by virtue of being unscientific.

Scientists do not gather in big conferences and vote on what ideas are easiest to understand and then decide those are true. Only religious people do that.

Although biology as a field of study did originate at the same time as evolution, the concept of studying life, in general, has been around since Ancient Egyptian times, long before the theory of evolution was ever introduced. How do you hope to explain this paradox?

It's not a paradox. Our study of life was greatly limited before the theory of evolution was developed. It's like how Einstein's theory of relativity is integral to modern physics. Sure, the study of physics obviously existed before Einstein developed his theory, but nonetheless, modern physics would not exist without it.

I understand that our study of life was originally limited. The point I was trying to make was that our study of life was not originally grounded in evolution. Well, whatever; I hate debating, anyway.
