If you know your Zelda, the title will have made sense before reading this.

Anyway, someone made a patch that, when applied to the ROM, will put Zelda 1's "Eagle Dungeon" where the Deku Tree level used to be. If you want a link to the patch, I will provide it shortly (the link WILL NOT LEAD YOU TO A ROM). What I need to know is, how can I find the Debug ROM? When I say how, I don't mean "give me a direct link to it" I mean, "what should I google for?"

I've tried "Ocarina of Time Debug ROM" but it only turned up dead ends and sites that are ancient. Here is the txt file that came with the patch (all url's edited out):

LoZ Hack, Release 1:

Here it is, the first known complete level hack for The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time.
It's a remake of the first dungeon from the NES game The Legend of Zelda.

Requirements:

.Nemu64, Currently the only Emulator that will run the patch properly.
.Copy of The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time, Debug ROM
.Patching tools listed below.

Instructions:

Apply the patch, start a new game. Enter the Deku tree to play the "new" level.

Current release is stand alone, meaning after you get to the end, you can't play through
the rest of the game. Also, the patch is ONLY compatible with Nemu64. Both issues will
be address, and new features added in future revision.

How to patch:

Before you do anything, always keep a back up, of your orginal ROM.
NEVER patch your orginal copy!

Next, you'll need 2 things, first is a byte swapped copy of the
The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time, Debug ROM. If it's in an
archive such as a .zip, or a .rar, extract it first.

Then to check if it's byte swapped, the easiest way to do that is
to run latest version of Zelda Edit, found here:

(URL TAKEN OUT)

and load your ROM.

If Zelda Edit indicates your ROM needs byte swapped, let it run
the byte swapper. Load the Rom in byte swapper, choose Big Endian,
and click Big Endian, choose YES when it prompts you
'Give the ROM a proper ending?'

Alternately, should you not be able to run Zelda Edit, you
can use a HEX editor such as XVI32, found here:

URL REMOVED

to open the ROM. If you can read the title of the ROM at the top
'THE LEGEND OF' it's already byte swapped. If you can't, you can
use this byte swapper:

URL REMOVED

to swap it over to Big Endian.

Second thing you'll need is a copy of PPF-O-MATIC 3.0, found here:

URL REMOVED
(Currently down, use www.google.com (http://www.google.com), and seach "ppf-o-matic")

Run PPF-O-MATIC, choose your ROM, and the patch. Apply the patch,
and thats it.

Changes:

Beta 1
. First Release

Beta 2
. Replaced Dark Link with Stalfos

Beta 3
. Fixed error that prevented slingshot, and one of keys from being
collectable in the same playthrough.

. Added compass that was mistakely replaced by key

Release 1 (LoZ_hack_r1.ppf)

. Added, sign at the end of the hack.

I'd try looking on some of the larger ROM sites, like ROMNation and EmuParadise. They have a large collection, and might have what you are looking for.

Also, try out the eMule filesharing program. You'll find a wealth of things there that will never turn up in a Google search.

asking for ROM's and how to obtain such illegal material should not be discussed on these forums.

asking for ROM's and how to obtain such illegal material should not be discussed on these forums.

He's not asking for ROMs (which is an offense.) He is asking how to obtain them (which isn't an offense.)

The rules say no ROM requests or links to ROMs. Neither of those are happening here.

Nicholas Steel

so asking how to obtain illicit material and getting a valid answer is ok?

Basically. Yeah. Would you rather the person asking be slapped on the wrist and issued a warning or something?

Of course. Knowing how to get it, and then actually going and getting it are two different things.

excluding the slap on the wrist, thats what most forums do :)

The wonders of loop holes.

Against the rules: Give me a link to the ROM I need! (not actually a request, just an example)

Loop Hole: What should I google to help me find it faster? (see the difference? ;))

"zelda ocarina debug rom"

Enjoy.

Majora

that gave me 3 dead ends in japanese!

(well, I found it after I made this topic, and I'll get screenies. The only problem is that it crashes randomly and I get "Graphics Plugin access violation" error messages when I try to pause :()

Darth Marsden

How strange. I found it fine, but that may be because I'm registered at the Torrent site I tracked it down at.

Hey, Wrath, can you give a link to the patch? That sounds rad and I want to try it.

MottZilla

Don't give out hyperlinks or URLs that go directly to where you obtain copyrighted materials. Telling people what to search for or the name of a website should be ok.

Next, Nemu64 sucks. I don't even see why you'd bother wanting to play this when you have to use such an old outdated emulator.

Majora

I actually switched to Project64.

.......

Is it OK if I give a Link to the Patch?

MottZilla
04-03-2007, 05:45 PM
Yes. As long as it's just a IPS/PPF/XOR type file, and doesn't contain the ROM. Pre-patched ROMs are a big no-no. Patch files are ok.

Cool. It's a ZIP file with a .ppf in it and a ReadMe.

http://www.myfilelink.co.uk/file.aspx?id=213f0e9e27de4fcc84449a0f31d02e80

EDIT: That Link is broken for some reason, I'll get a new one shortly

EDIT2:

The patch
http://www.sharebigfile.com/file/131583/LoZ-hack-r1-ppf.html

Instructions:

If you have the ROM, open it in Project64 and start a new game.

Exit PJ64, and google for "ppf-o-matic" which will let you apply the patch

Apply the patch with the program. (BACK UP YOUR FRICKIN ROM)

Open PJ64, and when you see a list of area's, pick "Field"

Head to the Kokiri Forest/Deku Tree

Have fun.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

Back up you ROM

Read the ReadMe I posted above.

Sometimes it will freeze when going through certain doors, I don't know why, but if I find a way to prevent it, I'll post it here.

Sometimes, when you press START, PJ64 will give you a "Graphics Plugin Access Violation" erro. It randomly happens when you try to access the sub-screen

The rooms are big, which make you feel smaller

The map is wrong, I assume that PJ64 thinks that Eagle Dungeon is on the Fire Temple Dmap (or whatever Zelda uses, equivalent to ZC Dmaps)

The music is the same one from the Deku tree

There are A LOT of Dinalfos (Or Lizalfos, I can't remember.)

Young link has the master sword, but appears to be weilding the kokirir, but inflicts MS damage.

Everything is translucent.

More to come as I rememebr them.

Most of the answers people give regarding sites to find ROMs etc are common knowledge (Zophar's Domain, Torrent sites etc.) I still wouldn't recommend dancing on the fence with the issue though.

In regards to the mod, I watched a video of it on The Hylia. It's neat that someone figured out how to make something like that, but it's so lame. Let's hope the creator does something worthwhile with his skills.

I admit the hack was a bit dissapointing, but you might as well be asking for someone to make TP with an OoT Hack
