Why would these games THAT OLD still you have to purchase them? I don't understand. I mean nobody is gonna ever buy them so why don't they make those full versions free? In Rise of the Triad Full Version, You can edit the levels and play your custom maps. I mean, These games are so ancient and it would be pointless for someone would still have to purchase the full version!

Because everyone involved with them and their distrobution wants money. Chances are, that's the only reason they made it to begin with. When it comes to stuff like that, people are greedy

At least, that's my opinion

You can download Duke 3d for free (with source code in fact). Go get that one ;p

Otherwise, a game is a game. You pay for the programmers' hard work, even if that hard work was done over ten years ago. The Legend of Zelda is really, really old (older than these). Should that be free?

Either way, where are you even finding these games to buy? I'm surprised there is even anywhere they can still be purchased - other than eBay maybe.

Some old games you can get for free. There's also the concept of abandonware- similar to freeware, it's the idea that these games are so old and have been out of print for so long that nobody cares anymore. This is especially true for games whose companies might no longer exist. The good thing is that most abandonware sites will remove downloads if requested by the parent company, showing that they do still care about protecting copyrights.

Wal-Mart still sells Wolfenstein and I believe Doom.

People do still buy these games.

Some old games have been re-released - The original Dooms (as The Doom Collection, or some such) and Wolfenstein 3D. Both retail at budget prices, though in several reviews I've read, the fact that we're paying £5 for games 10 years old did not go down well.

It's all about money, plain and simple. Some companies, such as id or 3DRealms aren't concerned with making money with old games - hence releasing the source code to their earlier hits. As well as being a great gesture (they're giving away their old games for free) it allows people to 'update' the games - allowing them to not only be played on modern machines, but take advantage of numerious graphical updates.

Now the ultimate question - since id has released the source code to Quakes I, II & III, could we convince Epic to part with the source code to Unreal/Tournament? It'd totally rock if we could.

A good game is a good game and is worth 5 or 10 dollars. Regardless of age.

I cirtainlly wouldent mind if they did that to some of the 2D Platform games like Comander Keen and Cosmos Cosmic Adventure.

Collections I've seen a reasonable Prices:
The Doom Collection $10
GTA (The old 2D ones) $10
Kings Quest $20
Space Quest $20
Police Quest $20
There are more but I can't think of them off the top of my head.

I hope Sierra's collections do well especially, as I'm hoping to get Quest for Glory added to the List.

Pretty much my thoughts exactly. Hell I bought Descent for Playstation awhile back. Can you not afford 5$ or 10$?

This reminds me though, a long time ago PC Gamer did this issue where they released a CD with buttload of old full-version DOS games for free (they got permission from all the publishers so it was all legit). It was pretty awesome. I forget what exactly was on there other than Monkey Island and I think Duke 3d (to go along with 3dRealms releasing the source code I think). I still have that CD somewhere. I wonder if they still make those games available (online somewhere). This was like ~5 years ago though (back when I still subscribed to them - they got absolutely shitty around 2000 or so and even started covering Xbox which pissed me off - it's a PC mag, not a Console mag!)

Commander Keen was the VERY first game I played on a PC. I miss playing those and the Cosmo Comic Adventures.

Ha, found the CD:

-Road & Track Presents: The Need for Speed (no idea if it's the same franchise)
-Ultima Underworld: The Stygian Abyss
-Ultima 1: The First Age of Darkness
-The Secret of Monkey Island
-Links: The Challenge of Golf
-X-COM: UFO Defense
-Wing Commander
-Alone in the Dark
-Terminal Velocity
-Duke Nukem II
-King's Quest
-Descent

I guess Duke3d wasn't on this one - but I'm positive it was on another one.

Warlock, there was a CD with DN3D. I've lost the CD many a year ago, but I still have the game, along with the special text file refering to a different company for tech support. I should find my CGW #200/20th annivarsary disc and scan the images and crap along with screenshots from the game listings. (that's also the disc with Zelda Classic 1.84 on it lol)

Ahh! I remember what Zelda Classic 1.84 was like! it's was so obsolete and look at all of the improvements it made now! It's amazing! Keep up all the good work, ZC Developers!
