I am stuck. There is a large rock in front of Level 2, and I cannot figure out how to blow it up...

You need to blow it up with a Super Bomb. You can purchase one at the shop on Desert Island. The easiest way to get to Desert Island is by taking the dock on Forest Island that you entered on (the SE-most one). You'll go through the waters of Death Island. At the first raft branch, go up; at the second, go right. Once you reach Desert Island, go right and up a few screens to reach the shop. You can buy a Super Bomb for 40 Rupees.
