View Full Version : Tile Set Ideas - Gauntlet + FFA

Hmm, I am rather surprised that I haven't seen tilesets for Final Fantasy Adventure or for Gauntlet yet. I would do them, but I really don't have the time with all the other stuff I am working on, so I thought I'd toss the idea out there and see if someone bites. Most of the sprites for FFA can be found at the Shy Guy Kingdom, as can the Heroes of Gauntlet, you are up to your own for everything else though.

Later,
Lotus

When you say Gauntlet are you referring to the series with a few NES titles, one by Tengen, as well as a few newer ones, where you play as warrior, wizard, valkarie, or elf, or are you thinking of some other game?

Hmm... Looking at this thread, I think I might have a go at doing a FFA Tileset, thanks for the idea Limzo

I have a Final Fantasy Adventure tileset which could be considered anywhere from more than half to mostly complete, depending on demands. I like the way the tiles are colored, too. I've had it for several months, and I've really wanted to make a quest with it but I've just been too damn busy lately. There are some screenshots of it in the screenshot thread, near the bottom of the 4th page (if you're using 25 posts per page).

You all remember Foxx? No? Well, back when he used to be active (well, semi-active would be more accurate in those days) he ripped the tiles for me. They were intended to be on their way into a quest which would be deemed Sam Atoms's sole intellectual property. He's my slaveboy. :sly:

So yeah..... say the word, and I just might upload 'em for ya.

I was thinking NES Gauntlet, but any of them should work. And the FFA tile rips are pretty good, nice job, I had started to rip them myself, but I am a big slacker and don't have the time. And Joe123, I am Lotus, not Lizmo.

Anyways, you should upload what you got Sam, the tiles are pretty decent and you could use almost all the the tiles without any hassle in ZC.

Yeah, it's been a busy week. The pack is here (thedarkhideout.homestead.com/files/files/exp.qst), be mindful that it is for ZC v. 1.92 beta 183.

Ooooo. You actually did all the sprites too. I decided to cheat and used the LTTP items and debated whether to use the BS or the LTTP enemies, but finally went with the BS ones. Nice work on the sprites, I wouldn't have found the patience.

But then again, my tileset is in color. MUHUHUHOHOHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Which version is this for?
Also, you should submit it to PureZC.

Joe123
02-28-2007, 03:32 AM
It's for 2.10 - And I have submitted it to PureZC.

I might put it into colour sometime soon, it would just be a lot of effort seeing as I'd have to do all the palettes myself. Although I had heard tell of a colour version of FFA. Is this true or not?

Lotus_Eater

They remade it for the Cell Phone, but I know very little of it.
Making it color should be really easy, just alter the palettes, right now they are all gray, just make one shades of green, blue, brown, red, pink, etc.

It doesn't work quite like that, seeing as I have to sort out monsters which fit only into certain Csets, all of my sprites into some Csets and everything, but I've started doing it now. I've done Csets 2,3 and 4, which is most of the overworld colours, plus Cset 6 for the main character, swimming tiles and Pol's Voice, and also the Csets for when you get the different armours. I'm just about to start planning out my enemy Csets - thats the big problem.

Eh, it shouldn't be too bad, I look forward to a color version. Final Fantasy Classic, the new Classic tile set!

So far your work has been great. I look forward to seeing more.

Well, I've done quite a lot of work on the tileset now. It's by no means finished; I've done very little work on the overworld and underworld tiles other than choosing Csets 2,3 & 4 and colouring about 10 tiles or so, but I've finished doing the enemies and sprites (although not the item sprites). Could someone have a look through and tell me what they think please

Whoooaaaaa. NICE! I wouldn't make the ordinary ground such a rich green, but other than that..... hot damn.

Joe123

heh ok I'll tone it down a bit. It'll be quite a long time before I've finished though.

Wow... Those look really good. It'll be a tileset I'll have to check out when it's finished. :)

Well I've knocked up some more screens just because its fun really. I've finished doing all of the sprites and overworld tiles now, and I'll have an updated version up soon. I've started looking into Level Palettes, but I'm not really getting too far, if there's anyone who could give me a hand it would be very much appreciated.

Sam Atoms

Wow. I continue to be amazed beyond words.

I wouldn't worry too much about the level palettes, as long as all the raw tiles are there, for each level you can just pick a few base colors and use them to recolor the dungeon tiles, similar to the way the level palettes in the original LOZ are arranged. You could even leave the palettes to be filled in by the questmaker. If I were designing the level palettes, I would start by making a white one and then one more for each of Roy G. Biv.

Joe123
03-20-2007, 01:22 PM
I'd rather not just leave the palettes, it wouldn't be very complete. I don't see where I would need all of the colours of the rainbow though, surely two browns in a dungeon Cset are better than a purple and a green or something...
Looking at Pure's level palettes, they have mostly dull tones and no bright colours like that, but I'll give it a try.
If you're downloading the tileset, do it from this link rather than any earlier ones, as they won't work (the one in my signature is to the black and white version)

What I meant, to be more precise, is that each of the level palettes would be themed to a specific color. Indeed, I would be inclined to combine the I/V into one and make one with more brown shades. Most of the FFA "dungeons" use the same set of tiles, so one could color this in as many ways as they please. For other sets of tiles, it would be better to color in a way that looks natural, like the caves.

hee hee hee, I've made a mini-quest with the tileset. As you'll see if you play it, its now almost complete. I need to finish off the level palettes - I'll add one for each of Roygbiv like Sam Atoms said, which shouldn't take too much longer as I have the layout for each ready now - I also need to finish adding the music from the game which will take a while but is getting there, and sort out the misc. colours and probably a couple other things, but not that I can think of right now.

The mini-quest can be found Here (http://dodownload.filefront.com/7130512//3dc22ca7e8e128c1ba3572c21ea0e843804be9125024afa522 486a61ef75ad5617473ca8fd3d111d)

EDIT:
The tileset is now complete! It can be found here (http://www.purezc.com/index.php?page=tilesets&id=64&showComments#comments)

Very nice work. I especially like the way you've done the enemy sprites.

If I had one small gripe, it would be that you made this set for 2.10. I never did like getting around that version of ZQ. Maybe it wouldn't be too much to ask to see a version of this tileset in beta 183 as well?

Joe123
04-26-2007, 12:02 PM
Nah, I'm not really prepared to do that. When I first came, the newest openly released version was 2.10, and that's what I've used since. I have 183 to play some quests on, and I have some newer betas that I was playing about with, but I use 2.10, so that's what I made it for.

Sam Atoms
04-26-2007, 09:40 PM
Very well then. It isn't really a problem, I've found that you can export graphics packs out of version 2.10 and reopen them in beta 183, although you have to make several adjustments in the interim.

Joe123
04-27-2007, 02:54 AM
fair enough. You're welcome to release a 183 version if you want

the mini quest? sometimes if says your download has failed, then you have to press download again or something, its on the same page. Bit tempremetal, usually works though

I'm making a proper game with it aswell now, and im about 30 or 40% into that

Does anyone know where I can get a MIDI for the 'dungeon' theme, which plays in most inside places like the Cave of Marsh and the Silver Cave and Davius' Mansion and just about everywhere else? I cant seem to find it anywhere at all.

Sam Atoms
05-17-2007, 10:52 PM
Yeah. I've looked, and I haven't had any more luck finding it than you have. In fact, I have found several MIDI that claim to be in FFA but I swear I can't remember them from the original game. It's as if people have been uploading music from a different version of FFA than the one we're used to.

I guess all I can say is, maybe try looking around for themes that sound similar. The rest of the Seiken Densetsu series (Secret of Mana) might help.

Joe123
05-18-2007, 03:17 AM
Well thanks for looking. I spent about an hour trawling through google and a midi search engine finding nothing. I started going through the game to get to the marsh cave so I could record that bit as a wav file to try to get someone to sequence it for me, and I found another two tracks that I couldn't find anywhere either.

I'll have a look at secret of mana, although I think the music is quite a bit more sophisticated in that. The only reason for not finding any of the music that I can think of is that there was another version of the game called Mystic Quest in some countries I think, and then theres another final fantasy game called that that's completely different...
