Hm. I'd say that your best bet to really teach you the D&D system, is to get Neverwinter Nights. Even a Demo would suffice, really. You get to witness the results of your stat-plotting in action. They provide a review of the effects they have in the game world in a little window near the bottom. For example, ShadowTiger attacks the Grig (19 + 2 = 20 | DC: 15 ) ... etc.
If worse comes to worse, you can always ask on the forums. :shrug:
