Hmm, might it be possible to program NPC's as enemies? Simply have them walk around, be invincible to attacks. And have it so when they "attack" you it triggers a message string? Another possibility is instead of taking damage from your attacks they trigger a message string to appear?

Basically the main variables to edit would be their immunity or unusual susceptibility to attack, and how there attack functions.

Just some food for thought.

I think that would be too complicated, that would need scripting, etc.

But you can always make animated combos, like the 2 boys throwing ball in LA. The ball moved from tile to tile. You could make the NPC walk between 2 unwalkable tiles, which would be surrounded by direct warps. And so on, using the close-talk-npc technique.

Ok, I was thinking so you would not need scripting. Also I know all about the older ways of doing it, I was refering to something totally new.
