Yeah, basically, topic. It's uh, linksys. I couldn't figure out the creating a network thing, I tried to do it but my DS doesn't recognize the network.

A wireless card generally only works for connecting to networks, not set them up. You'll need a router to do that.

Can't I connect to it like, ad-hoc style or whatever?

Also, There is a network very close to me, but I can't figure out where. It's passworded. A friend of mine can take passwords from encrypted wireless signals, using linux. he's done it for me before. Does anyone know how this would be possible for me to do without installing linux on my machine?

You want us to help you access somebody elses wireless network, that they themselves have password protected?

In ad-hoc mode it may be possible to use your card as an access point. I've never really fooled around with that so I can't give any pointers.

Your friend probably can net you the WEP key of the wireless network in a very short amount of time, but technically this is theft since you are using an internet connection you do not pay for. To my knowledge this has only been used as a charge when a guy was caught driving in the wrong lane while using his laptop to download child porn off of other people's wireless networks (I swear I wish I were making it up (http://www.theregister.com/2003/11/26/wifi_hacker_caught_downloading_child/)), so I'm not sure what your risks are. The ethical thing to do would be to determine where the wireless access point is using NetStumbler, then asking the owner of the router if he could give you the WEP key if you promise to only participate in low-bandwidth DS play.

If the owner is smart the WEP won't be the only hurdle. My router is configured to only allow 3 DHCP addresses for wireless and also will only allow devices with the same MAC address as my DS, laptop, and Wii to connect. The MAC address can be spoofed and usually only 2 of the 3 wireless IPs are in use, but that's when I notice a lot of blinkenlights and check the connected clients list to see if I need to change my SSID and WEP key. Also who broadcasts their SSID for any reason anyway?

Before we had a wireless AP set up at my house, I used a laptop running Linux as an ad-hoc AP. I can't remember the exact setup though. But it is indeed possible to do this sort of thing.

is netstumbler software or hardware? I'd much rather figure out who's it is, I'm sure it wouldn't bother them. Is there any way to message someone else connection, if netstumbler is something I can't get?

Maybe you should try to google it, cowboy. Also that might have answered your question in the first place; when I did a quick search I turned up an article written by an elderly lady about using a wireless card on a PC as an access point on Windows XP.

im sorry dude, i have to say it though, punkonjunk, you're retarded. Spend $50 bucks on a damn router, it's really not that difficult to find $50 dollars. I think I have that much in my couch cushions for cripes sake. I make more than that in an hour working on a website. Come on dude. You can do it, i know you can, you're just as resourceful as anyone. Sell your ass on the street corner if you have to.
