Given that people with two consoles are vastly more likely to have a 360 or PS3 along with a Wii as opposed to a 360 and a PS3, and given that 7.2 million people already have a 360, I'd say Sony is not likely to catch Microsoft for a long, long time.

I think Wii's are going to by flying off the shelves for the holidays and Sony will find itself in the unfamiliar position of looking up the leaderboard.

They certainly will have an uphill battle for a change. It'll be interesting to see how everything unfolds. However I'm moe concerned with a few games coming out in awhile like Assassin's Creed, Lost Planet, Resident Evil 5, and probably some others I forgot. All 360 games. I'm so glad I upgraded to a display that can do 720p. ;)

Not really surprising...

Other factors play a role here too
People who wanted the systems are buying them, but in the end Wii is going to outsale the PS3 this holiday because of sheer number of available units. I don't think those numbers will be much difference until later next year. People will either not buy a PS3 because its too high, or they will be Wii because they can't find a PS3.

I've heard that worldwide, Nintendo is going to ship 4 million Wii's by the end of the year. This year. As in, forty days from now. And Sony has only shipped, what, 80-200k PS3's so far? Even if Sony could match those numbers in available units, I doubt they could sell them all at a time when money is extremely stretched to begin with. Somehow seems like the completely WRONG time to launch a console, but then again, there's really no better time either.

The worst part about that is you buy a 500$ or 600$ PS3 and it doesn't even have HD capable cables. Unless you had Component cables for PS2, you're stuck with no HD. Ans ofcourse they are really pushing digital HD via HDMI. You really fork out alot for that.

You should have bought them and sold them on eBay.

Same if you see any Wii component video cables! ;)

I just did some math, and based on the latest numbers, the Wii is outselling the PS3. Not by numbers, but by dollar amounts. Let me explain:

1. I took the number of Wii's sold and multiplied by $250.
2. I took the number of PS3's sold and multiplied by $600 (bear in mind that not all PS3's cost this much).
3. I compared the two numbers and added whole percentage amounts in order to determine the approximate difference between sales.

Both of the consoles have racked up sales in the hundreds of millions, but based on the above formula (and assuming the numbers are correct, and forgiving the economic subtleties that my process ignores), the Wii is currently outselling the PS3 by about 12.5%.

Here are the numbers I got:

PS3: $166,928,400
Wii: $187,993,250

Of course, you have to remember that as I said, this model does not take into consideration the number of $500 PS3's being sold. I have no idea what the ratio of 20gb to 60gb PS3's is. Also remember that Sony is losing around $300 on each 60gb PS3, so technically, their real number is around $-83,464,200.

Okay, so by your estimate Sony has lost around $80,000,000?

I LIKE those numbers.

Grasshopper

Yeah, but if you calculated numbers that way, Microsoft would have been losing $928,964,862 in one year just on Xbox 360 (assuming all sold were $400).

MottZilla

Um what? M$ never took a 400$ loss on every Xbox 360 console....

I think MS takes between a $50 and $100 loss on each console. Also, they are selling an average of 7 games per console. At a $7 licensing fee per game, that's $49 per person. Which means that 1 year later, MS is already coming close to breaking even - though that ignores other costs like marketing.

I think Grasshopper is referring to the $400 model, not a $400 loss. From the numbers, it looks more like a $100-something loss.

MottZilla

Yes but current estimates say that the bill of materials now is less than the retail price of the hardware. While some of that price is profit for the retailer, seem Microsoft can't be taking much of a hit anymore a year later.

Grasshopper

Yes, that what I was referring to.

I was just trying to point out that there are other factors in whether a company makes or loses money, than the mere cost of the console.

Indeed. Software sales, accessories, and other things are a key part in that.

Is it just me or did the Wii counter go down by almost 300k units??

I coulda swore I saw it at 700k.

MottZilla

It's not just you. It seems like the Wii counter was much higher than that before.

Cloral

Yeah i think it was at something like 750k not too long ago. I guess someone overestimated the sales figures.

MottZilla

By a hell of alot it seems. From the figure we see now it looks like there are plenty of unsold Wiis. I thought they said they'd have a million at launch, and not even a million are sold according to this.

I dunno how reputable they are. Where do they even get their info from?

Has the 360 really sold over 7 million so far?

Yeah the owner of the site has said he over estimated. As for how they get the info I dunno. It seems as though he is just guessing.

All I know is that I looked for a Wii for the past week. I waited in line and was 62 out of 60 at Target on launch day, unable to get my hands on one. I wasted my time getting up after 1 (yes 1) hour of sleep to wait in line. I couldn't find one anywhere, not at a store, not online. My wife finally, secretely bought me one on Ebay for a hundred dollars more than the retail cost. I already have TP and an extra wiimote (thank god I found that). I hopefully will be getting the system in the mail tomorrow, I cannot wait. At first I was angry about the price (the overpaying), but then I realized it didn't matter, all that matters is getting my hands on the Wii. I have never been this excited about a console before, and I have owned every Nintendo Console except Coleco, as well as most every other non-Nintendo one since the SNES days. This is the first I am getting at or near launch. The system is building up serious momentum and word of mouth. I can't even find extra controllers at stores in the Greater Philadelphia Area. There is a buzz among the casual gamers. Get the Wii...

That is the gamespy article I mentioned earlier about Sony losing anywhere from $240-300 on each PS3, depending on which model you get. Also, to disprove all of you Xbox naysayers, the article also states that MS is making about $75 on each 360 sold, apparently.

I'm also curious as to how the site mentioned in the first post gets their data. Maybe, if we're lucky, the Sony numbers will come down by a few hundred thousand? :naughty:
