I need help designing an overworld. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I should plan an overworld. I am really bad at making an "explorable" map when you can wander around and do whatever, like the first quest.

Do what I do to make it seem open but be closed. For example, in my forest, it's 8 screens all connected every which way, but the only way out of the forest is on two screens, thus creating the illusion of frredom, while still maintaineing control. Mountains work well too, as people dont question giant rock walls that much, suprisingly.

Make something cool like when you are playing you'll think...

"Dam, I wanna reach that place..."
Like in SwanSong because you see the place on the map :) it makes the player wanting to play the quest more.
