Hey, I'm looking for a quick piece of advice and thought I'd post a spam-like topic about it. Does anyone know what the requirements are for getting a full time entry-level job at Wal Mart, as opposed to a part time one? I'm 17, birthday in January, and am planning to try to get a job there.

To make this thread less spamish, I'm also open to any other suggestions/advice/experiences about Wal Mart anyone may've had. Or you can discuss it for it's own sake.

slit your wrists before working for wal mart. it's probably the filthiest store I've ever walked into. and by that I mean the floors, shelves, etc are fucking literally disgusting. there are much better opportunities to be had. but if you insist, I honestly wouldn't even stress about trying to get hired there. it's not exactly like they're looking for college graduates. :/

Be retarded. If you have a disability of some sort, play that card and who knows?

I tried once to get a job there, but I wasn't really qualified in terms of identification documents at that point in time. I do know that at least at the store I went to, they ask questions about things like what you would do if you caught employees smoking pot during breaks and stuff.

wow, that's some great insight.

Yes, Wal Mart sucks balls. We all know this. However, as my situation stands, I'm seeking a temporary, save-some-money-and-quit job before moving, and I live in a small city (population about 9000) in Texas. Every other opportunity is just as bad; there's fast food (Taco Bell is especially awesome; all the employees are either 30-something guys who do okay, or they're quite clearly drug addicts and/or mentally retarded. I exagerrate nothing; I've had them behave like stoners, start talking about my hair, or yell panickedly through the drive-through intercom like they were actually scared of the order), small businesses (who probably wouldn't hire someone who looks like me, not to mention I could be putting myself in physical danger by being alone with such people for long periods of time), or possibly the grocery store (and ours is no better than Wal Mart).

Wal Mart, I know something about what it's like, I know people who have experience with it, they won't make me cut my hair, I can do it and get out. It's the best shot I've got for a temporary job.

I really want to get hired full-time if I can because since I'm only working a few months, I would make a lot more money that way. About double, possibly. If I get paid minimum wage ($5.15) for a 40 hour week, that gives me about $3500 in four months' time.

So if anyone knows how to get hired full-time, that would be very helpful.

Well, it's Wal-Mart. As far as I know, if you can spell your own name on their forms you're already more qualified than 60% of their current workforce. Just treat it like you would a normal job application.

If you don't go for Walmart, go for Taco Bell. It can either be really fun, or a major pain in the ass.

Anything but Wal-mart, this is from someone who has worked there.

Getting a short-term full-time job anywhere is pretty tough. Full-time employees are entitled to benefits such as insurance and typically the company invests training in them.

Wal-Mart in particular I hear avoids hiring full-time as much as they can. Good luck.

Wal-Mart hired me for a summer job once and I was scheduled 40 hours a week at first. One week they didn't let me leave on time so I went over 40. They always scheduled me just below after that... God forbid they pay an hour of overtime because they wanted me to stay. The people who worked there also treated me like crap. I found that funny since I was finishing up my college degree and they were the lifetime Wal-Mart employees.

If I remember correctly, don't think you are eligible for benefits until you are scheduled full-time for a certain number of weeks. They will probably go out of their way to make sure you don't qualify for them unless you actually need it.

If you are going to work for that company, I would actually suggest looking into Sam's Club if there is one in your area. I worked at one of those too. They treat the employees better and also have a higher pay rate than Wal-Mart, and the application process is the same.

I have a better idea. When you go in for the interview, start a fire. Don't work at Walmart or you'll be a rat/scab/piece of shit. Don't work at Walmart, and don't buy anything there unless it's a matter of life and death. Even then make sure it's actually worth it. Anyway, let us know how burning down your Walmart goes.

I don't really live near a Wal-Mart, but I've heard so many bad stories about Wal-Mart in general (many more than in this thread), that I think it would really be a bad idea to work there. I've been in one once or twice, and I can say that I wouldn't want to work there. At all.

I am going to apply at Wal Mart because, and I say again: I do not have better options at my disposal. I live in a shittastic city where Wal Mart is one of the nicer stores, everything else is more redneck/tiny/not likely to hire/just as bad or worse. A job at a fast food place would be better than, say, a cardboard box on the street, but especially in our run-down ass craptastic hick versions, I really don't think it'd be better than Wal Mart.

If one lives in this craptastic town but doesn't shop at Wal Mart, they have very, very limited options on buying... all kinds of things. There's maybe one clothes store in town, there were two grocery stores (of the same damn chain, yay monopoly) and Wal Mart has now caused one of them to close. There are almost no places that sell books, office supplies, toys, or what have you anywhere else in town. Perhaps better advice than "don't go to Wal Mart" is "never go to Graham, Texas" or more straightforwardly "Never go to Texas."

But I don't have these options. I need to do the best I can with what I'm supplied with so I can get out and do better things. So Wal Mart it is; it's useless for me for anyone to post here saying "OMG don't go to wal mart </3 </3 </3". I appreciate what you're trying to say and thank you for trying to talk me out of it, but such advice really is of no practical use to me in this situation.

That said, thank you to those who gave me advice on actually applying. In addition to this thread I've managed to talk to someone who recently worked for Wal Mart and get some insight on what I'm trying to do. Basically, my plan at this stage is:

1. Go and fill out an application (and maybe apply in one or two other hopefuls that I highly doubt I'll get taken at- the Library is one of the better-looking places but all that works there are middle-age ladies I think); on the application put in several areas I could work in and make sure to include checkout, one of the better places for promotion to full-time.

2. Wait for a call, ask around if nothing happens or reapply if necessary.

3. Go in for an interview blandly dressed with my hair back, act like a yes man, pee in a cup.

4. repeat #3 with some other person because Wal Mart is way awesome- maybe the cup part only once though.

5. Start working, be careful not to screw anything up, work hard to keep up with it, experiment with what I can get away with with my hair (like having it down)- cautiously-, and never tell anyone at Wal Mart that I only plan to work a few months (they don't need to know that). With luck I might get a full-time position, or maybe not; either way has some advantages, I guess.

6. Quit sometime next year and probably never work for Wal Mart again; possibly steal my vest when I leave unless they've got shortage issues or some such.

what are you going to do on the application when it asks your gender? suppose you could check both or maybe draw in an "other" box. im seriously kinda curious, not meaning to purposely offend you. :3

Well, given that I'm still at least a year away from starting any kind of therapy/hormones/dressing and am in no way "out" except in the magical land of the internet, I'd pretty much be putting male on that form.

Now, in the future handling such matters will get more complicated; getting a job can be extremely hard for someone mid-transition, and legal matters aren't very rosy post transition in general. Ask me how I do it in 5 years if you're curious.

You should just put what you have on your license or birth certificate if you don't have that. All they care about is what you are legally not what you feel like inside.

Indeed, but there's some possibility- I think, though it's very hard if not impossible to do in most cases- of changing one's documents post surgery.

I'm nowhere near such things yet, so M it is.

From what I've heard Birth Certificates can be changed in most states, I think four states won't change the sex on them. Also the difficulty of doing it also would vary depending on the state.

What I did was apply in store, and I waited for a call back. The call was to inform me when I should come in for my interview. After I went through the interview I was scheduled for a second interview, and through that one I was scheduled a third. Most of the time there are only two interviews. After the third interview I received some paper work and was sent to another company to do my UA. Once that went through I got a call telling me when I started.

I have worked with them for about a year and a half now and personally with my experience I have not had any problems. I have had the following positions: overnight stocker, inventory control specialist, electronics, and customer service manager. I have heard some bad things from people, but overall in my store there are not too many things. I got hired into full time, and now I fluctuate between full time and part time depending on how my school schedule works out. I know that when I started I got paid $8.45 which is $0.95 above Oregon's minimum wage. I also got a differential of $1.00 when I worked overnight, so I started at $9.45 pretty much.

Since you are 17 there are several things that you cannot operate: the trash compactor, the cardboard baler, any power equipment ( including the electronic cart pusher ). So it can limit your positions down. If you have not applied yet you can actually apply here (http://www.walmart.com/careers).
