I came home the other day, and there was a 50 - 60 pound server unit on wheels sitting in my room.

I don't know what I wanna do with it now. :(

... Well holy crap! Host a SSB Online Server. Perhaps a MoonEdit server as well.

I don't know what either of those are though. :(

Videotape yourself pushing it off of the roof of a tall building, and then put it on YouTube. Duh.

Give it to me and I'll give you $5. Problem solved.

Alternatively I'd settle for the hard drive(s)/ram/processor, at your choice.

I'm not too desperate to pay $5 for hard drives that have a 60% probability of being bigger than 6GB- and thus bigger than my smallest drive, nor for RAM, and unless this server is more than 5 years old it's got a better processor.

But nor do I have $500+ for a real computer. Yet. At this stage I'm really still glad just to have a computer of my own.

You do realize the RAM might not be compatible with your PC don't you? By the way, if you pay attension to the ads that tend to come in the saturday or sunday papers, there are frequently big rebates on hard drives. I recently saw a 120gb or 160gb drive for 40$ after rebate, IDE and SATA.

Gimme that 10 dollars by your monitor and I'll tell you
What's the specs of that sucker anyways?

most personal ISP accounts dont allow you to run a server, which is a bummer, because a corporate account is like $100+ a month, just because its meant to be purchased by a company. I figured that out the hard way when I tried to run my server. On the upside, there are co-location hosting companies that'll take your server and host it for you and manage it's hardware and setup and whatnot for about the same price, lol. You have remote root access so you can take care of all the software stuff, its basically like having a server in a office across the city, except you dont have to buy the building.

Pentium II 350 mhz
256 mb.

It came with Redhat Linux loaded onto it. But I said "No, fuck that." And loaded Windows 2003. It actually runs pretty smoothly. I just have that and my main comp running Maxivista and just use it for AIM, IRC, and another browser window to display at once. Pretty useful for that.

Really...redhat would've been more secure, and interesting, in my opinion. I mean, you probably know Windows 2003 inside and out. Learning linux has been quite the adventure for me (I got Fedora Core 4). But, I guess if you're just using it as a spare PC, windows is a better choice. Also...its not really a server unless it has server software on it and running, lol. Figuring Apache out has been quite the adventure as well, but I've got it running a few websites on my intranet successfully. How much did that thing cost you? It's got a kickass case.

The green clear plastic case is my main comp. :P The big black pile with the monitor on top is the server. My dad just brought it home from work figuring I'd want to fuck around with it before they threw it away.

Thats awesome dude, I wish my dad worked at a computer place, lol. They throw stuff like that away all the time, poor computers all going to waste, its a shame really.

Heres my setup:

The little silver one on the top of the desk underneath all the taco stack of papers, thats my fedora server. I built it from a barebones kit with an AMD Athlon 64 3000+ and 1GB DDR2 RAM. The weird lookin blue little thingy ontop of my blue router is a KVM switch so I only need one keyboard mouse and monitor for both computers, sweet.
