For the sake of enabling better use of all controllers, you need to support changing the directions. On my controller, only the analog stick works, and it gets obnoxtious with old style movement, as I can't use the d-pad. Or at least, you could enhance controller support to be better compatible with Saitek P750. (Which has 12 buttons and a slider)
BTW: I think that the menu (not the subscreen) should only be accessable from the keyboard and can't be reassigned so that you can always have access to the menu. I have crashed ZC by doing this.
