How to get Zelda Classic working on your PC.

Start by downloading and unzipping all files into a new folder of their own, "ZCBeta" would be a good folder name.

Depending on what version you download, your files should look something like this;

(list of files for the 192b182 beta program)
182test.qst
1st.qst
2nd.qst
3rd.qst
ag.cfg
allegro.log
alleg41.dll
agsetup.exe
sfx.dat
zc192b182d.exe
zc192b182s.exe
zc192b182w.exe
zelda.dat
zelda.exe
zelda (shortcut)
zelda.sav
zelda-w.exe
zgp.dat
zquest.exe
zquest.txt
zquest-w.exe

Now that all these files are there with the exception of maybe the ag.cfg and the Allegro log you need to get the program to write those for you as well.
Double click on "zquest-w.exe", when ZQuest opens, click on ETC at the top right and play lost woods midi.
Click on ETC and turn the music off, and exit ZQuest by clicking on FILE then EXIT.

You should now be able to play the games.
Double click on "zelda-w.exe" and when the flames come up press "Enter" on your keyboard.
Press Enter again to pass the Zelda intro screen.
Register a name, and press enter and the first quest will be ready to play.
Enter the name "zelda" if you would prefer to play the second quest.

How to load custom quests in Zelda Classic

1) Double click on zelda-w.exe
2) Press "Enter" to pass the flames.
3) Press "Enter" to pass the Zelda intro screen.
4) register a name, and press enter.
5) press "A" (Alt)
6) Press "A" (Alt) again
7) browse to the quest you want to play, choose it and press "ok"
8) press "Enter" to play.
The above steps assume you have put the custom quest in the folder with Zelda Classic :O)

That doesn't work. Whenever I try to open up zquest-w.exe from my program files directly, it just freezes up my computer and when I try to open it from the start menu, it freezes up whenever I hover my mouse over it. Then when I try to open zelda-w.exe, it just freezes up when I try to load the custom quest.

Try opening it windowed. (Assuming you use windows) Move your mouse to the bottom of the screen. Click on start, go to programs>Zelda Classic 2.10 and click on Zquest double or Zelda Classic Large.

This is somewhat of a Longshot, but I've packaged the full thing into one solid "fresh start" build. It's just a zip of all the basics you need, which will run straight out of the package.

Unzip This (http://users.sephiroth.ws/ST/zc/ZC211Beta10bFull.zip) into a new folder all its own. It's Beta 10b.

If you want Beta 11, grab This (http://users.sephiroth.ws/ST/zc/ZC211B11Full.rar). Again, its own folder. NOTHING in it except one of these zips and whatever they contain.

I've encountered problems like yours, and having a fresh start with these files tends to help quite a bit.

If you want Beta 12, check out the ZC Beta Discussion pinned threads.

Sorry man but it's still not working. :( When I download the first one and click on z-quest, it goes into some weird zoomed in version of the screen and I have to shut it down. Then when I click on zelda-w.exe, nothing happens. I downloaded that other one but when I click on z-quest, nothing happens. Then when I try out zelda-w.exe, it starts up and I press enter to get past the first few screens but I have to move around the window for it to notice I did something so it was hard to just get to the name registation screen letalone actually playing the game. I think I'm just gonna give up on this ZeldaClassic stuff. :(
