June 5, 2006 - In a recent interview with Tech-On!, Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata offered more perspective on not only the company's unique strategy with the Wii, but how that approach integrates with the already-proven Nintendo DS. For instance, Iwata suggested that the Wii's always-on connectivity will allow Nintendo to distribute promotional demos not only for the Wii, but for the Nintendo DS.

"Let's say your Wii is connected to the Internet in a mode that allows activation on a 24-hour basis," he said. "This would allow Nintendo to send monthly promotional demos for the DS, during the night, to the Wii consoles in each household. Users would wake up each morning, find the LED lamp on their Wii flashing, and know that Nintendo has sent them something."

Of course, Nintendo hopes to offer more than just demos. Iwata also implied that in addition to offering a library of classic titles, the Wii will also let users download original casual games similar to what is offered by Microsoft's Xbox Live Arcade, opening up an industry which may be too focused on full-budget titles.

"When creating a packaged game to be priced at 5,000 yen, developers tend to feel the need to create a rich game," Iwata commented. "Yet it is possible to create a reasonably entertaining game in 2 months with a team of three. Offering such games for 500 yen over a network could lead to a reasonable number of people purchasing it."

Not surprisingly, Iwata again emphasized the lateral direction of the Wii, which is not intended to be a "next-generation" console; Nintendo is not trying to beat Sony and Microsoft in the high-technology race, nor is it intending to offer a mere successor to the GameCube. Iwata hopes a unique interface will ignite the Wii as it has the Nintendo DS.

"When Nintendo opted for the dual screens for the DS, more people were shaking their heads and wondering what we were thinking, than commending us for the decision. Yet the market turned out favorable to the DS," he said.

"Nintendo once was the champion in the console market, yet is now the challenger. Challengers have a hard time getting the market to listen to them. Our intent was to revolutionize the user interface in the portable games market, where Nintendo is the reigning champion, and follow that up with the Wii's success in the console market. We have earned support for our user interface innovation much faster than I had expected, and this should help propel the Wii forward."

Now that is smart. On top of the demo thing, he confirms there will be new "classic system" games via Virtual Console just like Xbox 360 is doing.

Nintendo is not working on a next-generation console

Not that I disapprove or anything, I think the only purpose this statement is intended for is to justify the Wii not being as technically powerful as the other two.

"I beat you! Woo"
"Well, that was just because I let you win"

If Wii is as good as its proclaimed to be, Nintendo needs no justification. I think Wii is already doing fine on it's own.
If Wii isn't "Next Generation" then its the "New Generation"....hehe

Not really. They have been saying that forever. The reason it's not as powerful as the others is cost. They want to make an AFFORDABLE console. It's not that they couldn't out-graphic the others, but then, look at the price of Xbox360 and especially PS3.

I've had a lot of fun with the DS download stations so far, so being able to try games out from home would be even better.

You're right, Nintendo could easily have made similar moves to get ubberiffic hardware. But they decided to try something else which may very well turn out to be the right thing to do for them. They really couldn't win a technology war with M$ and $ony.

Pardon my saying, Mott, but you bolded the wrong word. The word "win" should have been emphasized, because really, better graphics is a battle that can't be won. Not by any one of the three. It's impossible these days, that any major console could so utterly defeat their opponents through graphics that they could be declared a winner. It's just like nobody really won the console race for the last generation. Sony did better, but they didn't beat anyone, because it's still a three console market.

Eh, my point is Nintendo does not have the same amount of funds to throw at technology like M$ and $ony do. The fact is you can "win". It's just that it would require you possessing technology others don't. However no one really has any technology to create that significant edge.

exaaaaaaaaactly. :)

Somehow, that first article made me think of 1984's big brother a little... if big brother were super awesome.

Seriously, I love nintendo. They freaking rule. Sony is OK (Seem to be assholes lately... wtf ps3?) and xbox is gay... but nintendo just keeps ruling. It's hard not to sound like a fanboy when nintendo rules so much hard ass.

Nintendo should partner up with AGN and distrubute ZC quests via VC.

You are a fanboy if you say Xbox is gay. Xbox 360 is a good system. You can not like it, not buy it, but when you call it "gay" that is your badge of fanboyism.

by saying it's gay I'm saying I don't like it and won't buy it. I don't have a problem with microsoft - There is virtually no appeal to me on the Xbox. I haven't seen anything I'd like to play. So therefore, I'm not in big like on the system. I don't think my decision to say it's gay instead of elaborate like so makes me a fanboy.

Yeah it does. Because you couple such a statement with gushing admiration for Nintendo, while berating the X360 using juvenile language.

You are a fanboy.

It's hard not to sound like a fanboy when nintendo rules so much hard ass.All the important bits are underlined. It's like rating a game ENTIRELY by its graphics. If you have your opinions, you may as well explain why you feel that way, and definitely expand on the underlined bits. By themselves, they appear as if they're (At best.) a statement hoping to change objective reality by attempting to convert others to your opinion merely by stating them.

"John doesn't want to marry? Oh, then Joe is gay."
"Nobody is eating your mom's pasta at the picnic. It must be awful pasta."
" It's hard not to sound like a fanboy when nintendo rules so much hard ass. xbox is gay."
