OK, so I work as a waiter at... pizza hut. It's really sweet. Really.

Two things, one a rant, and one a genuine question -

First off, mexicans and tipping. Or chile people, whatever.
I am not racist. Seriously. But out of some 50 or so I've served, they either don't tip at all, or tip some miniscule ammount. The bill tends to be 20 bucks - 15 percent of that is like 1.50. It's not alot. Yes, I am an actual waiter. I make 3 bucks an hour.
I guess I'm curious - Any mexicans have a cultural explaination? Anything?

And you know, the ranty part -
Seriously, I'M A F***ING WAITER. I SERVE YOU FOOD, FILL YOUR DRINKS, GIVE YOU SILVERWARE. I AM A WAITER MAKING 3 BUCKS AN HOUR. people don't tip me and ITS HOMO.
Yeah. It's pretty gay. Just incase anyone cares.
yup.

I ALWAYS tip. Even my bar tenders. Sometimes I can't afford to tip a lot, but I always do.

Well, sometimes at one particular bar, I'll get really drunk and forget to tip the bartender, but the bartender at that bar is really cool and loves me, so she never gets mad. Probably because it takes a few drinks to get me drunk enough to forget, and by then I would have already tipped her at least $6 (or more) for the night. And I sometimes leave all my change on the bar for her, just because, and she loves it.

At the place I work we get a table of about 12(family of mexicans) that come in on a reg basis. From what I hear they do tip pretty good. We get some people that never ever tip and the waitress knows it but still gives good service.

I always tip good no matter how much the bill is but some of my friends you can have them swallow a penny and they will sow thier asshole shut so they wont lose it.

From my experinces in South America (and the world for that matter), tipping is not the norm, in fact, it's generally the opposite. If any gratuity would be given to the garçon or whatever, it would be included in the bill, if not, the guy is on his own.
In some countries, like Turkey, my friend said that tipping is insulting because they are expected to serve the customer and to receive a tip would make it too personal.
For the most part, tipping is an American and most likely they're not used to that custom (though I never have been to mexico, so I don't the norm, just telling you what I've noticed in my travels in Latin America).
Although here that does turn out to be a bummer since waiters here get paid below minimum wage often. So although they may not understand, they should at least understand that the tip money is part of your wage and should give something.
Anyway just given my 2 cents as always. Sorry to hear bout the shitty tips bro.
peace

Tipping is normally expected in Mexico, although they usually tip slightly less than Americans. Restaurants frequently include it in the bill, though, so it's possible they just don't even think about it.

What I like to do is introduce myself, and dont' leave a tip. Then return, ask for that waiter/waitress, and tip them like 10$.
After that, free food. :D

Being half-mexican myself, I can honestly say, I have no clue why you don't get tipped. I can say that $3 is far below minimum wage, in any state, and if the wages suck so much, you should get a better paying job. Also, some people believe that you should only get paid what your employer gives you on an hourly rate. And really, though I tip myself, I think it's pretty true. What right do you have to complain about low wages, when you're the one who accepted the job?

I've never been a waiter, this is a fact. But I can certainly say, there are worse jobs to be had, and quite frankly, I'm pretty sure I've got one of them. So until you get assaulted by an angry naked old man covered in fecees at your job, you really don't have too much of a leg to stand on.

Waiter's and waitresses in Australia earn a little more, but don't get tips at all. In fact, at some places, you can lose your job for accepting tips.

When i was over in the USA, i did tip. I ate at this one restaraunt a few times over a couple of weeks, and she remembered my breakfast order after the 3rd or 4th time, so i tipped her $5. I also tipped $5 for a $15 haircut because the hairdresser did a good job.

I worked at Crown Casino in Melbourne as a bartender and floor staff. Some of those tourists tipped ridiculously high. I'd bring them a drink and thed give me like $5AUD some dude even gave me $20AUD one time. Thats a fair amount, considering im already making $19.50p/h.

Down here in Melbourne, the tips that are given gets divided between all the staff at the end of the pay week. So its not like US, youre not expected to live off your tips. lol

Bad luck punkonjunk.

For the record, Mexico is in North America.

B) Perhaps you're just too damn pretty.

I'm pretty sure that minimum wage for a wating/waitressing job is like, $2.15 (in Ohio). I applied for a job at the Buxton Inn in Granville once, and I was only going to get paid $2.15 an hour, plus they would take my tips at the end of the day and add them to my check. Needless to say, I didn't take the job because, well, the money would have sucked. :(

It's really stupid that the law is written that jobs that are 'suppossed' to get tips can be paid less than minimum wage.

I work at Sonic, and over there, Mexicans are the biggest tippers. They ALWAYS at least give a dollar, and typically five. Love em.

I always tip people no matter what. For people who serve me food, I do 15%-20% at least, maybe more if they were really good. For bartenders I usually give between $1-$2 per drink I get, and hairstylists $3-$5 depending on how well they cut my hair.

Personally (Hispanic), I tip over 15% or I feel cheap. For Mexicans in your area, I would guess they don't have much money. First of all, they're eating pizza, so you know they don't have enough to be taking the family to an Italian restaurant or something. Also, you're talking about a lot of unskilled labor, or mechanics, people who work with their hands, so no doctors, lawyers, big time managers who work in ties and pressed shirts. These people work hard for little pay, and they don't like to share what little they have. Poor people in general don't tip well.

I usually try to tip when ever I can. Some times I actually can't afford 15% cause I'm poor so I leave the closest I can get to it. Wheather it'd be 2% or 14%. I tip because I know how much running around they do, especially at the restaraun I work at.

I don't tip hairstylists though.

I know several people that are waiters and they have the same problem with the Mexicans. They hate it when they all go in at once and don't make any effort to communicate in English, and then leave without tipping.

I know it's not easy for waiters, so if they do a good enough job, I'll actually tip over the regular %.
