Yes, I know that the music planning won't be for a while, but I feel that it's better to be prepared and have a list anyways. This is going to be a compiled listing for music suggestions. (this is going to be a lenghty listing...) It's also come to mind to maybe have multiple alt-music sountracks (say one all Minibosses, another all RPGs, ect)
Notes - this is based off of what I have and my tastes, feel free to suggest your own tracks or ask questions. I'm not even bothering to list anything from my MIDI archives, as I really don't have the time to go through about 250 hours of music within the span of a few.
(and if anybody wants copies of these, PM/IM me so I can send ya some)

this listing is not complete, as of right now (10:35PM 3/21/06), I still have to do the following--

Thanks for the list. :p Much appreciated man. ^-^'

Thing is, with the exception of Minibosses who would apparently allow for such a thing, ... ... won't copyright laws prohibit the mass distribution of music with a quest as widely distributed as NeoFirst plans to be? Somehow, I keep imagining us creating our own songs for it.

I can view these forums due to SE Dev forums. I would like to point out that I do write music for games, and I could easily get a couple of other people from AGN(I have a few in mind) who I could work with to create an original soundtrack for this.
Thank you.

Thanks James, much appreciated. :) (And you can see these forums because everyone can see these forums. :p )

We have no idea what sort of music we want though, so.. ... ... Much obliged though. :D

I assumed we were going to use custom music as well. Hmm, I just had a thought though. Are we going to use midis, or enhanced music? If we can use enhanced music, I'd think tracker music is the way to go, since it's not as humongous as something like MP3s... Although, can anyone compose trackers?

koopa

I'd say midis for the most part, simply because of space considerations and solidarity with dial-up users. There's so much you can do with midis.

As to the type of music, what's important to me is the mood it creates. There's a lot of good video game music "out there" that we could use. Reading through the list, I'd say my ideas are similar to the Cyborg's.

Of course custom music would be awesome if anyone can make some.

ZTC

*updated listing; added PSX and NES*

thankfully, most of the stuff can be found at VG music's site, and I can also convert the SPCs to MIDIs if needed; and I can mess around with MP3s to lower the bitrate so that each song is under 1MB and stuff like that (till some custom music is composed, that is :p )

Actually, I like to think I have a good ear for music. And if I get a decent program, I would be more than happy to put something together, in time. I do constantly find myself whistling/humming music that is NOT in video games, anyway. :p

Dechipher

I just realized I sounded really freaking pompous up there.
What I was actually trying to do was ask permission to get a few guys together to work on this. I wouldn't want to do it all myself, primarily because this is not my project and I could think of nothing better than to have AGN's finest musicians working together. So I guess what I'm saying is, would I be able to assemble a team to take care of the music (which would be approved by the rest of the team. I don't really know much about this except that I saw the words music suggestions. I would obviously familiarize myself first with the proejct before attempting anything :))
Thank you.

ShadowTiger

Why would you need permission? You're more than capable of handling such a thing on your own, James. You've done it before, certainly, ... and I know that you're working with Radien on DoR, I believe, so ... I trust in your judgement. :)

We'll first be needing a Forest Temple Midi -OR- a Ruined Castle Midi. We can use Z64's Forest Temple Midi if we have to, or Ultima 7 Part II's White Dragon Castle midi for the Ruined Castle dungeon, if we ever decide on either.

It depends on what's trademarked or not. Can we use any midis we'd like (Specifically, from VGMusic.) and will those be copyrighted?

Rakki
03-24-2006, 05:36 AM
Whether or not we're ABLE to use music from vgmusic, I think we should try to use custom music anyway. I think it would make the quest that much more impressive if we did. ;)

Dechipher
03-24-2006, 08:57 PM
Okay, so here's what I was thinking: I'll get together a team of people from AGN who feel that they are musically inclined and are intersted in contributing to this and then we'll work on getting splitting the workload pretty evenly. I figure we'll each have an area to work on and I'll take up the slack. Then any midi's you guys make can be sent to me, where I'll balance them out dynamically and maybe tweak them a bit to fit in stylistically, if given permission. Not neccesarily make them better, but make them fit in better with the rest of the music. If this is an acceptable plan, I would first need to figure out two things: How many areas/midis will we have, exactly, and how many people will we have interested in doing this, approximately. I have no problem picking the unassigned areas, but I think it would be really cool to have AGN's musician's do AGN's music to AGN's quest, if you dig. So, anyone interested?

btw Gerudo I'm making you work on this. :D

ShadowTiger
03-26-2006, 12:39 AM
Thanks James. :highfive: Sounds like a plan. ^-^ Alright, ... let's make magic people! :D

A few schematics for the areas planned: (The Basic Areas: )

The Overworld: Will consist of three areas:
1) A generally happy-go-lucky plains area, similar to The Minish Cap's Hyrule town (http://www.vgmusic.com/music/console/nintendo/gba/MinishCap_HyruleTown.mid) theme. The mood it should inspire is, "Oh, hey, look at me! I'm exploring an overworld all on my own! :kawaii: I'm doing so well so far. ^_______^ I think the instruments can even be the same. If you want to make this "unique," think about combining the mood themes from this midi and from OoT's Hyrule Field, the way it has the imagery that you're "progressing" through a field, as you roll and tumble across its vast surface.

The Forest: A cross between TMC's Minish Woods and SMRPG Forest, ... only slightly shadier, and with a slower tempo. You can imagine the mood. It's a quiet, but wary mood. Not quite eerie, but watchful.

The Dead Lands: Basically, you're looking across a charred, scarred lands. Tattered flags waving limp in the wind, (Well, waving as hard as a limp flag can. :p ) ... you can hear the wind as an instrument somehow. It's desperation, with a slight undertone of hope. Think ... Protoman's whistle tune, ... solitary, it will stand strong, in focus, and in control. It can convey whatever message it needs to from there. Plus, I figure having only a light whistle instrument and a windy instrument will be relatively easy to put together for you guys, so... :p

Forest Temple: Combine OoT's Forest Temple and the odd mood and "tingling" feelings of Wind Waker's Wind Temple, and you'll get this. I'll more than likely be including things like sparkles above the scenes, so make it sound mystical. Not necessarily awe-inspiring, but definitely peaceful.

Fire/Ice Dungeon: I really haven't decided on this yet. I'm thinking of something somewhat fast paced for the ice dungeon and slow paced and deadly for the fire dungeon, but I'm not quite sure yet.

Temple Of Light: Remarkably similar to what you heard in the charred realms outside Dungeon 3, only with a more holy overtone.

Temple Of Gloom: Remember Super Mario Bros 3 On the NES's last world, ... Bowser's realm? You've got the flashes of lightning and everything in the background, and all the suspense builds as you approach the final tower, ... ... Pretty much the effect I'm going for here.

Minibosses: ... Listen To This (http://www.gerudo.net/bh4/music/SeriousSamFight05.mp3) for a hint of what we would probably want. Minibosses will consist of a barrage of enemies being thrown at you while the terrain changes a little.

Bosses: - Each boss will probably have their own theme. This will come later.

Ganon's theme: ... Same as above.

I suppose I'm a bit late in getting here, but it doesn't look like much has been done yet...

It's obviously far from a finished song, but is this anything like what you had in mind for the Forest Temple? nfft1.mid (http://saffith.homestead.com/files/zcmidis/nfft1.mid)
It's kind of bizarre, as far as it goes. But then, you picked a couple of pretty odd songs to base it on.

ShadowTiger
04-06-2006, 10:05 PM
... That ... Is ... pretty damn cool, Saffith. o.o It sounds like something we could use for a fairy fortress or calm, peaceful area. That could be the town or forest area, but not for the forest temple itself. *Saves and Credits*

*Bows* Many thanks. :) It's a wonderful midi. ^__^

Saffith
04-07-2006, 01:15 AM
Thanks. I wasn't considering it finished yet, just wondered if it sounded good so far... But, hey, glad you like it. Still, I'll add on to it and see how it turns out.

Edit: Hell, long as I'm here, here are a couple of my older ones. Use them if you like. I don't think anyone else has.

That Autumnal midi is very enticing. I may just have to use it for the town. :) It could be really great if the world was structured that the magic forest would remain green and full of life regardless of the season. Now I'd only need to get those blowing leaves from plith's Descendent quest, and Autumn Town would be set. :p

The ophidian midi is interesting. Here (http://www.grandgent.com.nyud.net:8090/tom/mp3/mt32/%5BUltima%20VII%20Part%202%5D%20The%20Ophidian%20S croll.mp3) is what I had in mind when I saw the word "Ophidian." I'm not quite sure how I could apply such a thing, but I think it would be best suited for the Slash Trainer's abode. Sounds good? :)

Thanks once again for the midis, Saffith. ^_^ They're wonderful. :highfive:

I feel odd just posting random stuff here. Eh, but whatever.
I finished up that first one. It turned out rather odd, but I like it well enough. I also dug up an older one, in case you have any use for a creepy, seven-second loop.
auspice.mid (http://saffith.homestead.com/files/zcmidis/auspice.mid)
incidental.mid (http://saffith.homestead.com/files/zcmidis/incidental.mid)
Really, if you've any use for them, do as you please. I'll object to nothing.

On a related note, any interest in using enhanced music? I've got a great synthesizer (though I'm only just learning to use it), and MP3 and OGG encoders aren't all that hard to come by.

04-12-2006, 02:12 AM
I believe we're doing midis because of the fact that this'll be INCLUDED with ZC, and there are still people who are on dial-up downloading this. I mean, trackers may not be as large as MP3s, but still, nothing beats a midi in size.

Saffith
04-12-2006, 02:32 AM
The enhanced music could be a separate download, though. Then, if you don't download them, you just get MIDIs of the same songs.

Rakki
04-12-2006, 03:30 AM
Actually, I would like to have the option for enhanced music in the quest. Although, since ZC kind of has no webmaster right now, I don't see how another link would be added on the downloads page for "Enhanced music for NeoFirst."

ShadowTiger
04-12-2006, 08:59 AM
Well, we'll include At Least ONE "large music file" within the quest. It can be a little SPC file. Those are like, 64 KB apiece, right? Of course, those are generally from video games. Still, we should include at least something that shows off the capabilities of 2.11. That's part of what we're doing here, after all.

Saffith. Your music is orgasmic. Both of these will appear in the quest. I just need to figure out where...

ShadowTiger

Bump, etc. So now it's time to actually CHOOSE a forest midi for Level 1, now that it's actually complete. *Goes over midis in this thread*

It's been blaring away for months in my copy of the quest file; I can't imagine NeoFirst without it.

(Still think it sounds a bit like one of the Pokémon route themes, though.)

(According to MIDI Info, its full name is "Hylian Overture".)

"Winter" From the Four Seasons by Antonio Vivaldi, sequenced by Kostas Lialiambis (http://danshep.net/inverno.mid)

And a more sped-up version, some people thinks this sounds better. Sequenced by George Pollen. (http://danshep.net/lwinter.mid)

"Winter" From the Four Seasons by Antonio Vivaldi, sequenced by Kostas Lialiambis (http://danshep.net/inverno.mid)

One of my personal favorites.I didn't believe it, but it is indeed Vivaldi music that is actually passable as a cold, dark dungeon 'sploring track. Congratulations. (Though I have no idea if or where to put it...)

I know of hundreds of great MIDIs on VGMusic, but one of the rules of NeoFirst is that none of the MIDIs used can be from a game other than a Zelda.

Yeah....and VGMusic has a lot of Zelda songs.

But most Zelda music isn't exactly amazing, and tons of Zelda music in a quest is boring and unoriginal.

ShadowTiger

I'm still all for using Non-Zelda Video Game midis in the quest, as well as SPC files from SNES games, as they're only about 65 KB apiece.

_L_
02-18-2007, 01:07 PM
Well, for the most part we should stick with Zelda-derived and/or public domain music, just because we ought to be keeping our intellectual-property eggs in one intellectual-property basket.

Pretend that the previous metaphor makes sense.
