For the past few days I have been working on a sprite sheet of a character I created. By using a set of sprites from Sonic Battle, I have created my sheet! Also, My very first pixel art is also enclosed. Here it is:

http://www.freewebs.com/superstrider/ryu%5Fsheet.png

I have also created a voice set for this character, just like the ones used in Sonic Battle! Click Here (http://www.freewebs.com/superstrider/ryuvoice.zip) to download the zip folder containing the voice set.

Please tell me what you think!

Whoa...That is seriously sweet...Nice work there Super S. Are you going to use those in your RPG?

Hawt. ... In every sense of the word. ... *Recalculates* ... ... No, ... I'm ... hm.

I'm somewhat tempted to use them in ZC. You can do that now. O.o'

Major kudos on your work, SuperStrider. I know how long it takes to construct a sprite sheet. It's far from simple. Again, kudos, SuperStrider. May you become well known for your work. :)

Thanks... Did you check the voice set, too?

So...damn...cool... "go home, let somebody else fight"...So good...(tries not to salivate)

I'd love to see him as a character in Sonic battle...

FYI: The voice that is set for him is acually my voice... So, if you are a guy, that seems kinda creepy...

I'd love to see him as a character in Sonic battle...

I agree! However, I don't think that is possible, unless you are able to hack the game.

By the way... I want to know how you hack games... I'd like to see my characters in a few Sonic Games.

That's your voice? cool! (sorry about the salivate thing. I put it in as a joke, if you couldn't tell. :D )

I don't know how to hack games, but yeah, it'd be awesome...

I'm quite impressed, it's been quite a long time since I've done a sprite sheet and I know how much work goes into one. Kudos on the excellent job.

Here is an early concept sketch of Ryu that I did about a year ago:

It is in black and white, but you get the idea.

Wow, Nice job Superstrider! I'd love to see more of your sprite sheets.

Ah, spritesheet artists... Will you never recover from your common pitfalls?

Somehow I sense that this character is based on the sprites of an existing game sprite... Tails, I presume. Probably just colored yellow using a few clashing defaults from MS Paint, rearranged a few features, and then slapped with a big ol' signature image or two or three or four. Sprite repositories (especially ones based on Nintendo or Sega) are rife with these. As such, you've got room for some definite improvement.

Here's some advice: If Zelda Classic has taught me one thing, it's that you want your spritesheets concise, well-organized and with as little branding as possible. Fill up all that empty space, make sure the sprite dimensions are based in multiples of 8, and edit the palette structure too, as this makes it easier to put it into an actual game. Otherwise, you've just created fodder for a forgettable sprite comic authored by some 13-year-old kid looking for attention.

Oh, and never touch your sheets with Paint. That thing eats palettes for breakfast and offers crap for color editing.

it'd be a whole lot more impressive if the sprites were completley original, but it's still a great job. that thunder animation looks fun

I took a quick gander at Sonic Advance's Tails sprites and would have said the same thing, however not everyone is incredibly artistic. I did take a deeper look into both of Ryu and Tails, let alone any sprite from the Sonic GBA series; I noticed that the outlining of the Sonic sprites generally have a dark black outline in most places, whereas Ryu only has this in key places. Ryu uses mostly a darker shade of the color near it to outline. Using another sprite and developing over it is not necessarily a bad way to start out your own creations, especially with lack of artistic talent.

I am not a huge fan of sprite sheets; I would much rather see it in action either via an application USING the sheet, or several animated GIFs displaying the motion.

Definitely a good start on your road to creation. If you enjoy creating these do not stop, because you can amount to great work.

It's very cool. I've made a couple of sprites of my own for a few games, but they're a bit more... human then that. I'll have to post them one of these days.

By the way... I want to know how you hack games... I'd like to see my characters in a few Sonic Games.
The only Sonic games I know how to hack are the old Genesis ones. Not sure if this is any help at all (or even totally legal) but these tutorials (http://www.sonicresearch.org/tutorials/) may help you in the right direction. I found them when looking for a way to convert Knuckles into Shadow for a S3K hack that I've long since abandoned. Hope they help.

EDIT: This might be a bit more up your street. (http://www.freewebs.com/super2k/hackingnotes.txt) You do own the original, right? ;)

I'm more than capable of bringing that thing to life on a small app that will let you run and jump and use that electric attack. I might do it for you if I get time.

Thanks... However I do have a question with that program... I'm currently hacking Sonic 2 (I do have the original game, thanks to Mega Collection, so it is legal for me to have the ROM) by replacing Sonic with Shadow. But everytime I load it up with my GENS emulator, I get a blank red screen... How do I fix this?

Sorry mate, no idea. I am (well, was) a S3K editor. But since it's you, I'll have a look, see what else I can turn up.

EDIT: Well, there's this site (http://shit.sclassic.net/index.php/Category:Hacking_Information). Not sure if it helps or not.

What program are you using to hack the rom?

It's possible that the rom itself could have been corrupted due to the graphics (size maybe)

Darth Marsden

Yeah, I'd quite like to know what you're using as well. I've tried a couple of tools, but never really got into them as much as I'd have liked to. Really need to get back into the Sonic ROM hacking thing one of these days.

EDIT: It's one of these (http://www.hacking-cult.org/?utils), isn't it?

The program is TLP (Tile Editing Pro).

Darth Marsden

Aha! It WAS one of those! Then again, that is pretty much every tool out there, so it wasn't exactly fair...

Back to your problem... I haven't a clue why it would be crashing. You could try using one of the other programs from the list (follow the link in my last post), or try posting in one of the more active hacking forums - this looks like a good one (http://www.sws2b.com/forums/index.php?).

EDIT (God I seem to be making a lot of these): Here you go (http://www.sws2b.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=1861). Learn how to fix the red screen in Gens. You owe me.

I once tried to replace MegaMan from MM7 with Bass, and I got far enough to find and edit their graphics. The only problem is that the page I had to work with had hundreds of scrambled up 8x8 pixel pieces from various frames of animation. It would have taken me years to sort all that out.

Thanks. I'll try that when I'm at my computer (I'm at the library right now.) When the hack is finished, I'll PM it to you! (Since it is against board rules to post ROMs.)

Edit: That fixed it!

Quick Question... How do I edit the Life Icon? (See Enclosed Image) I want to change it from Sonic to Shadow.

*Sigh*

Give me a couple minutes.

EDIT No 484: Here (http://www.sws2b.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=1848&hl=life+icon). And you may need this one (http://www.sws2b.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=6298) as well. Now you REALLY owe me.
