How do I import sprites and tiles? I mean, I've tried typing in the name of the sprite sheets in the import sprites bar, but it doesn't work. I've tried loads of other crap, but they don't work, too.

Please help me, somebody. Keep in mind that I am not going to use ANY of the default sprites or tiles.

What's the type of the sprite sheet? (.qst, .zgp, .til, .zpl)

Did you download different sprites?

If so, you have to browse for them. Look for them where ever you downloaded them to. Also most sprites and tiles that you download come zipped, which means you need to unzip them. If you don't have a program to do so go to winzip.com and get one.

They are unzipped. They're GIF files, and I downloaded them from PureZC's tile index. Am I using the wrong commands in the bar, are they in the wrong place(I have moved the sprites), is it the wrong format, or what?

No. I see what you're doing wrong.
In order to use gifs to replace tiles, you have to goto quest>graphics>tiles then select the tile you want to replace or group of tiles, then click grab. Search for the file that you downloaded then put the box around the tiles that you want to import.

You can do this one by one or by groups. I suggest just finding a blank page in the tiles pages and grabbing all the new tile and just copy and paste from there. It'll save you from length of time from going back and forth with grabbing tiles.

you'll have to recolor them too.

Lastpatriot

That explains it. I can see the sprites by clicking "PAL" in the menu, but when I choose, say, the walking right sprite, it just shows up black, with a weird outline.

Do I just recolor it, or is there something else?

You might want to try and recolor them.

Lastpatriot

Yeah, I'm having a lot of trouble recoloring a faint, black/blue outline into a legible sprite.

rocksfan13

You could always grab the palette from the tiles.

Lastpatriot
12-28-2005, 11:12 AM
Um, yeah, I tried that, and I did something wrong, and it still came out black, and it would alternate between the classic sprite and the new one.

I apologize for being an ass, but I honestly have no idea what I'm doing wrong.

Did you grab the palette for the extra sprite tiles? Links are 6,7,8, and 9.

The description of what colors belong to him are in the help file under graphics 4.3.

Lastpatriot
12-28-2005, 01:52 PM
Well, I tried to grab them, but it would only highlight one palette at a time. Or am I clickling the wrong palette? Or wrong menu? Do I click on the sprite first, or what? I have no ******* idea.

a cset is 1 line of colors
a palette is 16 lines of csets.

there's a lot to what you're trying to do here.

to grab gifs they should first be opened in a paint program and reduced to 16 colors
then once you have grabbed the gif you almost always need to recolor unless it's something like a title screen and then you may want to use it's palette.

Here's a trick to recoloring

get the new 2.11b6 that is now available to everyone for testing
put your gif in there
grab the gifs palette in a new level palette in cset 2
put the palette you want to change it to in cset 3
start a screen with that level palette....
go into tiles and click b on every tile of the gif, this converts it to 256 colors
now you can recolor it from the cset 2 to the cset 3 while being able to see exactly what you are doing.
then you can get it back to 16 colors by simply taking a screenshot and grabbing it back into your original quest.
just make sure you change every color, I always seem to forget the black ;)

Well, I'll see how that works, I'll probably end up botching it, but whatever...

EDIT: Dammit, I can't even find where that thing is. The 2.11b6 thing...

Sorry for the double post, but I can't open zc211b6. It says something about "alleg42.dll" is not found.

Well, let's see how this works out...

EDIT: It still doesn't work. I downloaded alleg42, unzipped it, and it still doesn't work. I don't think I should do anything with a mechanical file, so... what am I doing wrong??

Lastpatriot

Am I supposed to be doing something with alleg42?

Freedom

you need to get the first download on that thread, with all the files and put them in a new folder of their own, then you should get the last zquest-w.exe and zelda-w.exe files that were offerend in the beta 6 release thread and replace the two original ones that came with the first download.

you can't mix these files with other versions.

it should work then

Lastpatriot

You mean I need to replace the Z2.1 files?

Freedom
12-28-2005, 08:36 PM
I mean in the original download you get all the files, like the alleg42.dll, 1st.qst, and a dozen or so others, and then you upgrade zquest-w.exe and zelda-w.exe files with the newer releases that are coming out as the beta team finds bugs and DN corrects them.

HERE (http://darknation.armageddongames.net/zc/merry_christmas.htm) is the original download

HERE (http://www.armageddongames.net/showpost.php?p=1051133&postcount=16) is the most resent zquest and zelda-w.exe to replace the ones in the original with.

It still doesn't work. Alleg42 is still missing.

Freedom

thought you already had that once.
It's supposed to be in that first link I gave you, it was in there for me.

Lastpatriot

Thanks for the help. guys. 1 more question: After I get this sprite stuff done, do I do the rest of the stuff in the Beta, or in Z2.1? The actual quest?

Freedom
12-29-2005, 01:48 PM
I'd do it in the 2.10 since there hasn't been a stable release of the 2.11 yet.
but that's your call.

rocksfan13
12-29-2005, 01:49 PM
Do it in Z2.1. At least until the official final release of 2.11

firefly
12-29-2005, 01:52 PM
You should do it in the 2.10 version or you will have to wait until the next stable version is released :hourglas:.

Yeah, I'm back. I honestly have no idea what the hell this means. I tried following this in ZQuest, I screwed it up.

Freedom

In the tile pages, if you click b on your tile, then go into edit it will then have the full main palette to work with.

if you go to palettes>levels and scroll down to a new empty one, open it, and click on grab, you can grab the palette from your gif.

if you put that in cset slot 2, and put the cset you want the gif to be in cset 3 you can then compare them as you recolor.

firefly
12-30-2005, 01:18 PM
You can reduce the colors by simply clicking on "R" in the grab menu (in 2.11)

Would all this stuff you're talking about be in, say, Alphadawg's tutorial, or one of the other ones?

rocksfan13
12-30-2005, 03:52 PM
Probably not, since alpha's tutorial was based on 2.10 and not 2.11.

Freedom
12-30-2005, 04:40 PM
It's not in any tutorials since the 256 color option was just added.
I have a page on palettes that will give you the basics, but it doesn't cover this.
Working with palettes (http://storm.prohosting.com/~mfreedom/ZC/palette/palettes.htm)
It does show how to grab palettes.

dawgs tutorial wasn't based on 2.10, it was based on 184 and 190
