View Full Version : Problem with mess. strings

I am having a problem making message strings. I don't really know where to start actually. I have recently built my first screen, and there is a cave. When i go into the cave it takes me to room 80, and I want that guy, Abei, to be there telling you something, and the sword to be there. I used an online tutorial, at zc.dpshack.com and what it says in chapter 4 didn't work. Someone please help. Thanks.

First, you have to type what you want your guy to say under quest>strings. Then on the overworld screen (not the cave screen) choose your guy (doesnt really matter who), room type (special item), tile warp (cave/item room), and message string (the one you just typed) under the data menu.

Okay thanks, but when I set the tile warp, what is the dmap number supposed to be? Also what am I supposed to put on the screen number in tile warp? I left dmap on 0 and screen as 0x65, because screen 65 is where I have the cave, and when I tried to play my quest Link wouldn't move at all.

You don't need to put any screen, if the warp type is on Cave/ Item Room you will be automatically sent to screen 80, and in the Dmap you can use 0, it will send you to screen 80.

In the tile warp, normally, you have 80 as the screen number and the Dmap number is the same as the one for the the overworld Dmap from where Link warps. Screen 80 is the default screen used for caves.

However, you can also make your own cave screen, set up a separate Dmap for it, then set the tile warp to warp you to that Dmap and screen.

To make your own cave screen you must use the Dungeon type and have a level for it, you need also to use the Room->Guy->String->Amount on the Room itself (use it in the cave not in the overworld).

Ok, I tried it with screen and dmap on 0 and Link wouldnt move in the game, and then I tried dmap on 0 and screen on 80 and he still wouldn't move. I don't understand why he won't move.

Are you sure that the warp type is Cave/Item Room?

and it doesn't work. Link just won't move at all.

Are you sure the Warp combo isn't a "Direct Warp"

try making Link appear at 136x168. that will place him at the very bottom of the screen. also, make sure you're using walkable tiles

I'm not sure what warp combo it is, like I said I'm new to this, check out the online tutorial at zc.dpshack.com , I followed that exactly, up to chapter 4, and it didn't work. Also the bottom of my screen is a row of bushes, so I can't put him there, I don't know what to do.

Also about the walkable tiles, I am able to walk around if I turn off the strings and uncheck everything about them in data.

You can't move link because that position is currently used to display the guy and the string, so when you enter the cave you appear in a solid block that dissapears when you receive the sword or any other item, You must set a different position for appearing link when he enter the cave, if not you will not be able to move.

In other words you should set a different position for Link that's below Abei (the guy) or you will not be able to move and you will have to reset, I hope that you understand this.

In ZQuest move to the screen 80 and press "W", the red blocks that appear mean that the tile is unwalkable, if all your screen is red means that all the screen is unwalkable.

screen 80 is okay, but screen 65(my starting screen) looks crazy when i press w

In screen 65 the red squares mean that the tile is unwalkable, so the screen 65 should be fine if you can walk normally, now on the screen 80, when you press "w" does the screen becomes all red?

screen 80 is not all red, but most of screen 65 is.

well as of now it works, all i had to do was turn off the dmap intro, i dont know why, but that was it, so Thanks to everyone that helped me.

I have the same problem, does any one know what causes this?

Getting rid of the intro worked for me to, thanks for mentiong that.

edit: For some reason the item I set the room for shows up in both the cave and the upper left hand corner of the screen. Can any one help with this?

edit: please ignore the previous edit, the problem has been solved.
