KOLKATA, India (Reuters) - A woman receiving treatment for diabetes at a state-run hospital in eastern India lost one of her eyes after ants nibbled away at it, officials said on Tuesday.

The patient recovering from a post-surgery infection shrieked for help as the ants attacked her on Sunday night, but nurses told her it was normal to feel pain from the infection.

On Monday, the patient's family saw a gaping hole with swarming ants in it when they lifted the bandage on her left eye.

Woah, gross. Nothing compared to British hospitals though. I think that's enough weird stories for one day, mate.

Is it bad that I almost fell out of my chair laughing at this?

"How did you lose your eye?"
"Some ants ate it."

*dies*

This is the most disturbing thing I've heard all day.

"Ants are eating your eye."

My monitor is now covered in vomit. Thank you. [J/K] - [But damn close to it.]

I wonder how the ants managed to find their way in there. That's just so disturbing...

Just imagine the pain involved in that. I don't think many things could top how painful that would be. Gah...I'd almost rather get my legs blown off, at least the pain is instant then, and I'd get drugs as soon as possible to numb the pain...being left alone at night while ants ate away at my eyeball would be a slow and excruciating pain. No drugs...nothing...I can't imagine.

its more like 40s and 50s horror..with really cheap sound effects

That would be unbelievably simple to simulate if it were in the 50's or 60's. Just dump a box of fake ants on someone's face, jiggle the camera around a little, then flash to the person screaming bloody murder while covering the eye.

If it was filmed today though, they'd need quite a few more special effects just because it's being filmed today.

...

I'll bet they could film it tomorrow though too. ;) ... ... ... * Dodges thrown tomatoes * :scared:

It sounds weird about the diabetes thing, I don't get why it would happen particularly with them...can the ants sense the sugar levels instinctually somehow, even if inside a human being?

Scampering rats and stray cats and dogs sharing bed space with patients are not uncommon sights at India's overcrowded state-run hospitals that are used by millions of poor and middle-class people.

I imagine India is what hell must be like.

Anyone in a country like that who has a child is a total idiot. Why would you bring a child into that world? It's hideously stupid. I consider procreating in a country like that no better than murder.

Omg, those nurses should be burned for that...

The article was somewhat vague, is she still alive. I would imagine that if her eye was eaten there could be some serious health problems, infection, possible brain damage if I'm not mistaken.

Not MUCH. I do, sometimes, and it keeps me glued, but not often. :D

heh. Now I'm thinking of that scene from "The Blob" (80's version) where they find that the old guy (first to contact the blob) has completely dissolved in the chair, and there are worms and maggots everywhere.
yeah, replace them with ants.
