How does one change the appearance of the life meter?

I want the hearts to look like something else.

I have little experience with this, but... It involves those tiles at the very beginning of the tile menu. I think the very first tile in the menu contains the appearance of hearts and half-hearts in you life meter.

You would be correct. They are also the bombs, keys, superbombs and rupees.
