Really! Why aren't you all arguing about how XYZ was robbed or how the new guy will ruin the whole thing? Or could it be that you just don't know? Well, you do now:

Yep! It's Daniel Craig!

After one of the most publicized casting processes in film history, Sony Pictures Entertainment and Eon Productions formally announced (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/film/4337224.stm) today in London that, as early reports suggested, English actor Daniel Craig has been cast as the sixth big-screen James Bond, succeeding Pierce Brosnan in the role. (Ironically, today also marks the 78th birthday of ex-007 Roger Moore (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000549/).)

Craig will portray agent 007 in the next installment of the forty-odd year-old franchise, Casino Royale, to be directed by Martin Campbell (Goldeneye). The film will be produced by Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson.

According to Reuters, "in typically flamboyant 007 style, (Craig) swept up the River Thames on a power launch to a news conference, escorted by Royal Marines boats."

"I'm kind of speechless at the moment," Craig informed reporters at the London press conference, held aboard the HMS President by the river Thames. "It hasn't really sunk in yet. It's a huge responsibility but also a huge challenge and adventure." Craig was dressed in a dapper blue suit and red tie befitting the well-tailored James Bond.

"I've just got to step up to the plate and deal with it," Craig said, adding, "Together with Martin, I just want to make the best film I can. It's not a question of redefining, but taking it somewhere it's never gone before."

Some video from the conference can be seen here (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/film/4342298.stm).

The 37-year-old Craig is almost a decade older than what the filmmakers had stated they were looking for in a new James Bond. Casino Royale will chronicle a younger, less seasoned Bond's early mission as a 00 agent in her majesty's secret service. The filmmakers confirmed that the current script will only bring back Bond's supervisor, M, but not gadget master Q or Miss Moneypenny.

Sony has issued the first photo of Craig in character, although the actor said his hair might not be that dark in the film. (See above pic - Darth)

"Daniel is a superb actor who has all the qualities needed to bring a contemporary edge to the role," Broccoli and Campbell said in a statement. Sony chief Amy Pascal added, "We believe that in Daniel Craig we have found the ideal 21st century Bond and we couldn't be more privileged to be working with Barbara and Michael, who are tireless champions and guardians of the James Bond legacy."

The new official film site has been launched and can be found here (http://www.sonypictures.com/movies/casinoroyale/site/).

Also unveiled at the press conference was the new logo for Casino Royale, which can be seen at JamesBond.com (http://www.mgm.com/jamesbond/home/).

Veteran Bond movie scribes Neal Purvis & Robert Wade penned the initial drafts of the screenplay adaptation of Ian Fleming's first Bond novel. Oscar nominee Paul Haggis recently polished their script.

Casino Royale is due for release worldwide on November 17, 2006. It will be filmed in the Czech Republic, the Bahamas, Italy and the UK.

Furthermore, Wilson also revealed (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/film/4337224.stm) that work is already underway on the follow-up to Casino Royale!

Daniel Craig's screen credits include Layer Cake, Road to Perdition, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Sylvia and Enduring Love.

oh I knew, I just didn't care really. I'm a Bond fan, but I'm not going to get worked up over the switch. Though I'm not going to hold my breath for critics to start with blond jokes...

I still prefer Brosnan. To me he seems to be one of the only actors who can pull it off. They should have gotten someone like Hugh Jackman. Now he could pull of James Bond.

I still prefer Brosnan.

I'm pretty sure Brosnan left willingly. We can't expect any actor to stay as Bond for too long. Brosnan was good, but he's getting a bit old now.

This guy seems good enough. We'll have to see the next Bond movie before any of us can really judge him though.

None of the other characters are in it? No Q or Moneypenny? What kind of Bond movie doesn't have the MI6 crew?

If you read the article, it's supposed to be an origins film showing early Bond. This would be before Q and Moneypenny came about. Those characters were introduced in earlier films and it wouldn't make much sense to have them around when they aren't supposed to be.

Why bother wondering if this guy will ruin the bond movies. The last two or three movies themselves ruined the whole set for me.

I did read the article. And every Bond movie I've seen has had Q (not counting the last one) and Moneypenny. Admittedly I've never seen Dr. No, but that's about the only one. No, wait, I never saw In Her Majesty's Secret Service either....

Whatever the next movie's like, it can't be as bad as the last one.

That's more like it!

Apparently, Brosnan was more then a tad upset to not be doing a fifth Bond film, but then again I think we all knew he wasn't coming back. There will be a M in the film, but no Q (or rather Major Boothroyd as he was known in the early days) or Moneypenny. Here's the quote:

Producer Michael G Wilson said the film-makers considered more than 200 actors from around the world over two years before settling on Craig. Neither Q nor Moneypenny will appear, Mr Wilson added, but M will return. However, it was not confirmed whether Dame Judi Dench will play the spy chief. Producers are now setting their sights on finding a female star to fill what Mr Campbell said would be the "best Bond girl part" ever. Casino Royale will be an adaptation of author Ian Fleming's first James Bond novel, in which the spy was introduced as a more youthful and cold character than he has been portrayed on film. "I certainly think it will be a little bit darker - that's not to say it won't have its sense of humour, of course it will have that," Mr Campbell said. Mr Wilson also revealed work had already started on the 22nd James Bond film, which would be Craig's second as 007.

I'm pretty sure the first one or two didn't have Q. Anyway, the movie is based on a book so blame the author if you don't like it.

Sean Connery was my favorite <3. Hugh Jackman is too big and muscley to do Bond, imo. But, he's way super hot and stuff so I'd love to see him do some sexy Bond lovin'...

I'm not fond of blondie, I think he's ugly </3

Connery was the best, that's pretty much accepted. I liked Pierce Brosnan as well, but I didn't even bother watching the second half of Die Another Day. From what I understand, I didn't miss out on anything. Please, Mr. Craig, don't make this movie suck.

On another note, I'd like to throw out there that "Live and Let Die" had the best song.

Obviously, it was by the Beatles.

007 is getting kinda old. I mean, it's always some kind of satellite that in a round-about way will destroy the world, and James makes use of some cool gadgets (and one of his own) while having hot sex with complete sluts.

I think America's national secret agent should be changed to the guy on Transporter 2. At least he isn't a womanizer who probably has more STD's than the chicks down here at Texas State University.

Have you seen the first movie, BoneGolem? GAYEST. FIGHT. EVER. Casino Royale was easily the most realistic, and they're aiming to keep that im the film, so hopefully it'll be more Bourne then Bond, if you get my meaning.

SPOILER ALERT - "M," head of the British Secret Service, hands Commander Bond what appears on the surface to be a posh assignment: thwarting an enemy Russian spy, Le Chiffre, in his attempt to win an exorbitant 50 million francs - KGB funds which he had lost through an ill-advised investment in a chain of brothels. Agent 007 lives an intensely hard lifestyle, and he's known to be the best gambler in the Service. He's therefore assigned to break Le Chiffre's bank at the baccarat tables of the Casino Royale, in the French Riviera - END SPOILER

Live & Let Die was by Paul McCartney & Wings, rather then the Beatles, FYI.

And finally, there has been a Q in every Bond film. In Doctor No he was known as the Armourer rather then Q and was played by a different person, but he was from Q branch and that makes him Q. In The World Is Not Enough Q's replacement was introduced in the form of John Cleese, then called R. In Die Another Day he had officially taken on the role of Q. And for the record, Q WAS in On Her Majesty's Secret Service - he was at Bond's wedding, where Bond uttered the classic line "Thanks Q, but this time I'VE got all the gadgets".

I'm not sure that he's the right person for the job, personally. I don't think he can pull off Bond's signature wit and style; he seems more like an actual agent would be - serious and efficient. I have to admit, though, that the only film of his that I've seen is Layer Cake, so perhaps he will surprise me.

Ive seen bits and pieces of a few films, but the only one I have ever seen fully is Goldeneye, which i enjoyed. I had heard that Clive Owen was gonna play james bond, I really like him and think he would of done a great job, this disappoints me, as ive never heard of this guy before. I have seen tomb raider, but I dont remember him. Hell probably do good tho.

yeah, he reminds me more of a villan type character, not Bond

Roger Moore, Sean Connery, and Pierce Brosnan (in his first two movies) were the best Bonds. I hope this bond dosen't suck like the ones after Goldeneye

I'm surprised that nobody's mentioned liking Timothy Dalton (my favourite Bond) but I guess he's a guilty pleasure. With the latest Bond taking a much more realistic approach, I guess Daniel Craig is a pretty good choice, but I guess we'll have to wait and see, won't we?
