View Full Version : Reputation System: Changes

I've changed the way the reputation system works.
Now everyone should be able to see who leaves notes about them.

Now you can all stop bitching about people leaving anonymous negative comments about you. Even if you suck. Which most of you do anyway.

Sweet, now I know who didn't have the balls to own up to their comments.

Ah, I've been wondering who gave me that negative rep vote. Well, now my curiosity has been satiated. Thank you, Eckles!

You wouldn't think that certain people would leave an anonymous neg reg, but now that the reps arn't anonymous, it really shows peoples' true colours.

Someone needs to start up a thread in GB to call the negative rep'rs out.

Yeah it could have content like:

WAAAAAAHHHH WHY DID YOU GIVE ME NEGATIVE REP YOU FAGGOT DON'T YOU KNOW YOU ARE ONLY SUPPOSED TO GIVE GOOD REP OR DON'T VOTE AT ALL WHAT A FAGGOT YOU FAGGOT I HOPE YOU DIE!

Seriously. All of my content, negative or positive, has been anonymous except in the rare case where I really wanted the user to know who it was. Most non-anon reps have been when I boosted a low-rep member so they would know that someone special liked their post.

The system was anonymous so that people could tell you your post sucked without fearing OMG ATMAWEAPON SAID MY POST ABOUT BEANIE BABY PORN SUCKED I'M GOING TO GET ALL OF MY FRIENDS TO HATE HIM AND VOTE HIM DOWN. There was and never has been anything cowardly about anonymous peer review.

However, the whiners always win.

The problem, I think, is not that people are upset about being criticized. Rather, people have been using it to make anonymous personal attacks, or simply to hurt people in some small way. That's not what the system was meant for, so it's been changed such that it's not as well suited to that purpose.

Edited because I'm an idiot.

I imagine it's part of the "gamer" mentality that most of us around here have. It's like trying to get a higher score or raise your stats, if there's a number associated with you and you have the ability to raise it, you want to get it as high as you can, whether it's your postcount or your reputation or whatever. There's nothing necessarily wrong with this, but sometimes people go about increasing said numbers the wrong way. Spamming to increase postcount, for example. Wanting to get more posts is fine, doing so by posting garbage is not. I think that the reputation system has been treated similarly, though I think it's a bit more difficult to abuse.

... It is not your IQ, dick length/cup size, value as a human being, or a score in a video game. It does not determine your worth as a Slashdot reader. It does not cure cancer or grant you a seat on the secret spaceship that will be traveling to Mars when the Krulls return to destroy the planet in 2012. ... Don't let it bother you. It's just a number in the database.
Rep here seems to be the same.

P.S. Appearently quotes don't count as part of the message length.

how does the number of green squares you get translate into the number shown on your CP? I've got +3 at the moment (yes, I have been naughty) and one little green square.

EDIT: and do you have to earn a certain amount of rep before you can give someone some more (it says "you must spread some more around") or how does that work?

You have to give reputation to 10 other people before you can give to the same person again.

It's got nothing to do with how "cool" someone is, if someone leaves you bad rep, it's because they think your post is insulting/immature/whatever.
Likewise, begging for positive rep probably won't get you any.

Just stop taking this so seriously. ;)

Everyone that gave me a comment said it was them who did it. I like honest people. A point of this is:
#36-One who has no honesty, has no bravery, strength, or intellegence.-Abdenian honor code.
