Simply put, it won't read game discs, and when I put them in, the disc might spin for a few seconds, but normally it won't at all. The screen will simply revert to the GameCube main menu.

Sometimes it will work if I have the patience to turn the console on and off for a while, but usually I give up.

So, does anybody know what the problem might be, and if there is anything I can do short of purchasing another system (I'm gonna go out on a limb and say there is)?

Sounds like it is going bad, but check out the "Lens Calibration Guide" here (http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/gamecube/game/915781.html) and if you feel like giving it a shot that might work.

I would just buy another GC. It's only $100. I'm sure there's a way to fix it, Nintendo makes great quality stuff. And that's from a Ps2 guy.

If it's under warrenty find out how to get it fixed by Nintendo. If not you could try finding a replacement drive assembley but a new GC all together may be better.

Eh... my old Playstation2 did that for the longest time... I just got fed up with it and bought one of those thin ones. It works so much better.

If I were you, I'd try to fix it first, and if that falls through, get a new one.

Yup, that's what I'm gonna do. My thoughts are, it's already buggered, why not bugger it some more, and maybe fix it in the process? If not, I'll just pick up another. :p

Sounds like its the laser. Just buy another, and sell the old one to someone that will repair it (on eBay).

It's only $100.

I wish I had enough money to say that...
