Sony claims that a group of cheaters illegally created a huge amount of EverQuest II currency over the weekend, and it says the players caused the game's economy to suffer 20 percent inflation in just 24 hours before being caught.

According to Chris Kramer, director of public relations for EQ2 publisher Sony Online Entertainment, the players had, on Saturday, begun using their so-called "duping bug" to make large quantities of platinum, the game's currency.

The players then began trying to sell the ill-gotten plat on Station Exchange, the official auction exchange for EQ2 weapons, armor, currency, and other virtual goods. "The amount of money in the game increased by a fifth in about 24 hours," Kramer said. "We have a lot of alarms for this kind of thing, and they all went off on Saturday."

Gee.. who would have thought purposefully creating an e-bay like system to allow exchange of items and currency for real US dollars would backfire and ruin the economy!?!

Hahaha.. stuff like this just cracks me up.

Uh, currency sales existed before SONY set up their own, and little could be done to halt it, so Sony simply took the best route and set the system up so it could be done on their own terms, and here we see an example of that working.

They were able to determine quickly that the economy was being altered by cheating.

The problem was SONY's bug, not the currency selling system.

So they could not see the economy inflate without the system? Not likely. All this does is encourage gold farmers. At least Blizzard is trying to ban them.
