Sounds like the first quest directory error (http://armageddongames.net/showthread.php?t=59715), to me.
To fix it, select Quest Dir in the Misc menu, and choose your main ZC directory (or whichever one you have 1st and 2nd.qst in).

Have you tried loading a custom quest, like example 1st.qst (press A, click browse, and select the quest)?

Gamer-pro777

I have tried to do that and ever outcome is the same and even if i try to change the settings or if i do what the faqs tells me what to do, it always ends up [Error : File 1st.qst cannot be loaded]
:(

Once i even try to load my 1st.qst file it always says Error: Cannot open file >.<

Did you used to have a newer version of ZC? If so, maybe you accidentally didn't replace the quest files from the newer version you had installed with the files included in the 1.90 installation? That would explain why none of the quest files work, because they're for a newer version.

try completely removing all version of zquest from your computer but first drag your custom quest onto the desktop second download 2.10 and reinstall it and move your custom quests to the zc2.10 folder. If this does not fix also download suport files

the links to the support files seem to be broken

I know this might sound easy for the people who have gotten the Zc program to work its just that i cant do it for some reason and when I try to load 1st.qst anyway i can it can and always says error: File Cannot be opened.

And this goes along with the demo quest as well.

here are the steps I did to load the Zc quest programs.

1: I set the keys to the way i want them
2: I Entered a name, {Error: Internal error}
3: I pushed A two times to go to the load screen,
4:I tried to load 1st.qst
5: I pressed ok
6:Tried to push ok again but the button was blank and it sayed{error file cannot be opened.}

Is there anything wrong with that? :(

Have you only tried one screen size. (full screen, windowed large, windowed small) Try them all because my friend had the exact same problem with this version and using a differerent screen size fixed the problem

Gamer-pro777

OK I'll try but I looked at the cache for the 2.10 version and it said that there was an encryption error and it kinda makes me think if that is the problem...

Well, you are going to get an error if you try to load 1st.qst that way. Try loading example 1st.qst like I said, and tell me what happens.

Usually, 1st.qst is loaded automatically when you register a new name. Just register the name, then hit enter on that name. ^_^

To start a 2nd.qst file, just register the name ZELDA as your name. And to start a 3rd.qst file, register ALPHA. Simple as that. :p

The way you're doing it, is how you start a custom quest that someone else made.

I'm having the same problem with every version after 1.00. If it's any help, ZQuest won't run due to a decryption error.

make sure you have all the files.

so did you follow what the page I linked to said?
If so it should work, if not see if you have things running in the background, like a virus scanner, and turn them off and try again.

Link-tastic

Thanks, I didn't see the link. Apparently I'm missing:

agsetup.exe , zc192b182d.exe , zc192b182s.exe
zc192b182w.exe , zelda.exe , zquest.exe

Are these necessary, and where can I get them?

Freedom

What version are you trying to use?
What os do you have, windows 98? XP?

190 (and before) is a DOS ap so it really doesn't work in XP.

The files above you don't need to run, the first (agsetup) allows you to tweak sounds and such, the next three are self extracting exe's that give you the base exe files for the program, so if you have them (like zquest-w.exe) then you don't need them, and the last 2 are the DOS files, which you won't need unless you are trying to run it in DOS.

The link I supplied gives a step by step as to what to do, like opening zquest-w.exe first and playing a midi so it will write you an ag.cfg file

If you have all the files other then what you mentioned you didn't have then go to the folder and double click on zquest-w.exe and see what happens.

I double-clicked zquest-w.exe, the screen blacked out for a few seconds, and then returned to the desktop and offered to send an error report.

I'm running 1.92 beta 183 on XP.

sounds like an allegro dll problem.
do you have alleg41.dll ?
if so is it about 499 kb in size, just curious if it's the same one I have.

there is a file called allegro.log, it should show you where it drops out.
you double click on it and open it in notepad.
mine looks like this;

Freedom

Where did you get that 183?, it has some old files, suggesting you upgrade to 173.
It seems you might have some 192-163 files mixed in or something.

Loading data file... Incompatible version of zgp.dat.
Please upgrade to v1.92 Build 173

I'll upload that file to filespace and let you grab it, and try again, I'll edit this post with an address when I get it there, it will be zipped so you'll need to unzip it.

here try this with the 183 http://fast.filespace.org/Freedom/zgp.zip

then if that works we can try and figure out the 2.10 problem.

Now it looks like this. 184 looks the same except that it says
"(Build 183)" in the first line. Of course, they both still refuse to run.

Is it possible that I need admin rights to run them?

Freedom
08-25-2005, 04:44 PM
yup it sure is.
In XP there is also a way to mimic window 95/98, you should also set that, only I don't know how because I run 98 ;)

Personally I'd run the 183 with the 184 player, there is no 184 zquest, the 184 player was released to correct some bugs in the 183 player (zelda-w.exe)

Link-tastic
08-25-2005, 05:45 PM
I ran beta 183 as an admin, and zquest-w.exe worked fine. But when I ran zelda-w.exe, it didn't work. It just appeared on the status bar for about half a second, then disappeared, and nothing else happened.

Freedom
08-25-2005, 06:00 PM
You're getting closer :)
did you set it to mimic windows 95/98?
if so, try deleting out the ag.cfg file and double clicking on zquest-w.exe and playing a midi, so it can write you a new ag file, that might fix it.

Link-tastic
08-25-2005, 06:22 PM
Well, I played Lost Woods in ZQuest, then stopped it, then exited ZQuest. When I ran zelda-w.exe, the screen went black, then returned to the desktop and that was all it did.

I checked the allegro.log, and got something identical(or nearly identical) to this:

loading data file...error loading sfx.dat

Freedom
08-25-2005, 06:33 PM
ok, I bet you have the sfx.dat file for the 2.10, it won't work in the 183.

here are the sfx.dat files I have, you'll need to make sure you get one for the 183, originals are down at the bottom, they are zipped, so yopu need to unzip them to use them.
http://storm.prohosting.com/~mfreedom/ZC/sound/sound.htm

Link-tastic
08-25-2005, 08:14 PM
Alright, I downloaded those sfx.dat files (the "spooky" one wouldn't work--a bad link I believe), and allegro.log isn't showing any errors anymore, but zelda-w.exe is still just blacking out the screen for a second or two before an error report comes up.

I played the Lost Woods and everything, as well as run it under 95 and 98, but nothing helped.

If changing from fullscreen to a window might help you'll have to tell me how. Other than that, I've got no idea what's going on.

Freedom
08-25-2005, 08:37 PM
You didn't need all those sfx.dat files, really only the 1 original for the 183 at the bottom.

If it's saying you have an sfx.dat file problem then that's probably what it is, I had it do the exact same thing to me.

BUT if you want to try it in window mode, you make a shortcut for zelda-w.exe and then right click on it and choose properties and put in -windowed after the target...
well, I'm lazy... check out this thread at Elise's board.
http://www.zeldaclassicforum.com/showthread.php?t=95

Link-tastic
08-25-2005, 10:38 PM
Running it windowed had no effect. It open, it closed, and then an error report came up, saying that zelda-w.exe had encountered a problem. And allegro.log is showing no errors at all.

Freedom

Anyway, thanks for all your help, Freedom. You're the man!

Allegro comes with the betas how are you having trouble? You might need to reinstall it or get a new one in downloads.
