All I can say is, Nintendo is freaking SMART. People will buy Revolution for this alone. All of those games for free. That is amazing. Plus more from 3rd parties as well (which may or may not be free.. it sounds like 3rd parties may charge for their old titles but it's all up to them). What really impresses me is the inclusion of obscure crap like the BS games (BS Zelda!!) and the 64DD games. We might finally freaking see stuff like Mario Artist here! I mean, even with pc emulation some of that crap is hard to come by. I'm not sure I've even seen emulated 64DD stuff though I havn't exactly looked for it. I do wonder if the N64 stuff will be enhanced at all. By which I mean they will jack up the resolution. It's hard to say as that kind of uglifies some games (because they were not designed at that rez.. thus textures are blocky, etc). Maybe it will be an optional setting or something. Something like that would be nice though.

In any case, this is cool as hell. I thought for sure even Nintendo's stuff would have to be payed for (like $5 a game or something). This is very nice.

Now all we need is for some other companies to sign on such as Square-Enix, Capcom, and Konami (and others). They probably won't offer them for free, but I'd be willing to pay for a little Chrono Trigger and Mega-Man 3 on The Revolution. :D

Yeah, there is stuff like Paper Mario I have been wanting to try for ages now too. And of course while NES and SNES stuff is easy to grab on an emulator, N64 stuff is extremely less so, assuming it even works. I havn't tried to play any emulated N64 stuff in a few years, but I doubt much has changed. Well the memory cards are supposed to be 512mb+. That's enough for pretty much every NES title on that list at least. Maybe it will have a little internal hard drive though. Who knows.

The Nintendo Revolution will undoubtablely use emulation to run any older titles. Yes, it's on the TV which is nice, but I can already do this with my modded Xbox. ;)

They mention stuff like free game downloads for buying revolution games or for a limited time and stuff.

Also:

The downloads will, as previously announced, be stored in flash memory. You'll be able to store games in the 512 megabytes built into the system, but should this fill up, you can transfer your downloads to an SD memory card and use your computer to manage the files. Iwata didn't elaborate, but did state that copy protection is in place (so don't expect to simply send downloaded game copies to your friends by e-mail).

Nintendo's use of flash memory rather than a hard disk was very much intentional. The company believes that kids as young as five years old will use the Revolution and could damage a built-in hard disk. Additionally, Iwata points to longevity, reliability and cost as being part of the decision to go with flash.

The internal flash memory is being used for a few areas besides the download of game classics. You'll be able to save games to the flash area, update the Revolution's firmware (adding new features along the way, presumably) and download game demos! That's right, Revolution game demos, downloaded right to your Revolution hardware.

You're actually right about that. I've had no interest in Revolution up to this point, but this has gotten my attention. I still don't think I'll be buying a next generation console, but if I did it'd probably be this. BS is Bandai Satellaview, an addon to the SNES that allowed users in Japan to download games to their system and play. There were many BS games; in addition to the ones listed, there were 2 Zelda games, one of which was A Link to the Past (which was later brought to the actual SNES, if I have my order of events right). The other was called The Ancient Stone Tablets or something along those lines and had voice acting and such, but was never released on cart. THAT would be something I'd definitely want to play on Revolution.

64DD was the ill-fated N64 Disk Drive add-on that wound up having a very sparse amount of software. There's Sim City 64, Doshin the Giant, the Doshin Expansion I can't remember the name of, a Golf game I can't remember the name of, the F-Zero X Expansion which included a track builder, and the Mario Artist games (I thought there were only 4 that managed to be completed, but this lists 5). It could connect to the Internet via the Randnet online service and was to be the first truly online-enabled system (the Famicom and Super Famicom had some online capabilities with addons, I think, but not like this), but failed miserably due to many delays. The available software isn't all that great, either, though the Golf game and the F-Zero expansion are both supposed to be pretty good.

And yes, the Revolution online service will be free. You may have to pay for playing third party games online (that's up to them, not Nintendo), but all first party games will be completely free online.

I still think that Nintendo will be pricing the games, albeit cheaply. 99 cents for a NES games, $1.99 for a SNES game, $4.99 for an N64 game and the BS & N64DD stuff? The latest issue of Famitsu Magazine in Japan reveals that all of Nintendo's first party-published NES, S-NES, and Nintendo 64 classics will be available for download on Revolution.

The publication offers no specifics on games, but an overzealous message board poster calling himself 'myahon' put together a preliminary list of some 214 possibilities based on their first party status.

the classic series are on seperate catridges which is where the cost came from but with the revoloution its all online so there is no need to make catridges and compact discs thus the price will be greatly smaller.

For a ROM I wouldn't pay more than 50 cents maybe. When you download the game you get nothing but a file on a card. That ain't worth anything to me. I'd buy an original game cartridge for 50$ if it were in condition to warrent that. But when you get nothing, I pay nothing.

Did I already metnion about this, you can bet that shortly after launch, programs will come out to let you put your own ROMs on your GC anyway. ;p Even though they say there's copy protection, nothing is perfect.

Did I already metnion about this, you can bet that shortly after launch, programs will come out to let you put your own ROMs on your GC anyway. ;p Even though they say there's copy protection, nothing is perfect.

I've really really dropped out of the piracy scene as of late (I tried my hand at DS passthroughs, got pissed, ditched the scene until I care again) but I recall seeing that as already possible with some tiny modifications. You can burn shit onto those lil tiny CD thingys.

On the topic of payment, I wouldn't pay anythign for NES or most SNES roms. I can play NES games 100% faithfully on my GBA flashcart, with hardly any scaling, and it looks great.
SNES emulation on teh PC isn't the same, so I'd probobly play SM and SMRPG, and maybe a few other classics that weren't ported to GBA.
Sega emu = NO because I've got sonic mega collection for GC, and thats really all I liked Segagen for.
n64 emu? wtf yeah. If it had online multiplayer. Otherwise fthat. Not that many n64 games had replay value outside of multiplayer. Thats why I like classics so much -- Replay value.
GC games had alot of replay value, too. Some of them. I'd probobly DL them if I didn't own them.

Btw, buying cartridges is great and all, but what guarantee is there that they will last? At least with the RVC you get assurance the games will work.

Dechipher, classic game cartridges are on MaskROM IC chips. These last virtually forever unless abused. After a long long long time you might start to wear down the copper contacts on the connector. But game cartridges for these systems from the 80s and 90s will last till you're long dead. The game consoles will too though you might have to fix misc parts on them. Ussually cartridge connectors.

While I agree with you, not everyone takes as good of care of games as one would hope. I just can't help but think to my SNES. There are quite a few games that just won't work right. My SMW2: YI game keeps resetting the data, that is, whenever I can get it to work. My Secret of Evermore game is scrambled, and my latter two DKC games keep losing data. Maybe my family is just rough on games. But at least with the RVC you wouldn't have to worry about how your brother takes care of your game. So long as you put your memory card up safely.

Last I checked, most (if not all) SNES games use batteries to keep save data. The batteries do have a finite life, and when they die, your data has issues.

For whatever reason, my version 2 SNES likes to erase the date on carts. I think it's because the carts dont sit snugly in the console, and when it gets wiggled even the slightest bit, the consol resets and the data is lost. It's frustrating.

While having the carts for nostalgic sake is kinda cool, I'd rather just download the games and have them all playable on one nice little black box.

The SNES games that save ussually (always as far as I know) have your usual lithium battery in them. Simply open it up and replace it. Good as new. You will need a "game bit" or sometimes its called a security bit. There are two different sizes I've seen though I forget the measurements. You need the smaller one though.

Secret of Evermore probably has scratched or dirty cartridge contacts on the edge connector (the bottom).
