So your music has to be midi?

Music doesn't HAVE to be Midi, it's just the smallest music file type, I believe. Someone correct me if I'm wrong though. As for a list of music formats you can use, mmm, it might be in the ZC 2.10 thread, but I'm not positive on that. As for sound effects, they have to be .wav files, and they have to be in the sfx.dat file. You'll want to make a backup of the original sfx.dat though, if you're going to make a custom sfx file.

I've seen some SPC files smaller than some of the midis I have. :) (Always nice to see. ^_^; Heh.) ZC 2.10 can use .MOD, .IT, .MP3, .SPC I think, .SM3, .. not sure. Try it and see.
