WOOP WOOP help a brother out [video editing]

I have some super-secret projects in the works but the lawnmower has hit a stump. The purpose of this hopefully short-lived thread is to help me solve my problem.

I need to convert a .mov file to some other format. I don't care what, be it .avi, .wmv, or anything else. Basically if VirtualDub or WMP can work with the output I'll be happy.

Also, is there a way to get video clips from DVDs without ripping the entire movie?

Information on how to convert to AVI/DivX using three free programs (one of which is VirtualDub).
