I have followed the production of the movie a little bit, and now it seems they finally have a trailer for it. It looks like it will be pretty good. I think the casting is alright. Mos Def as Ford Prefect is probably the most contreversal since I don't think anybody thought of him as black. I think Mos will do a good job though. Alan Rickman as the voice of Marvin is fucking awesome. Zaphod seems to be missing a head, but I have a hard time picturing it without it looking silly anyways.

I have high hopes. Adams wrote most of the screenplay before he died, and the new guy was dedicated to perserving Adam's vision. Don't expect this to be an exact retelling of the book. Adams has always been liberal with the story in order to fit the medium it is being presented in, so he made changes where he thought was appropriate.

So what do you guys think of the trailer?

I'm rather worried about it, but if Adams himself wrote most of the script, there's a limit to just how bad it can be. It's got a lot to live up to, though.

He does have a second head, but it's hidden underneath the one you can see. His top head flips back and the second pops up. You can only barely see it in the trailer, though.

Incidentally, from the illustrated version of the book:

Although of course they'd have a hard time getting it to look as good in motion.

I've been waiting a good long while for this film, and it's good to see it being treated with a little respect, unlike some other big Hollywood adaptations. The casting of Alan Rickman as Marvin only reinforces that belief (I honestly cannot think of anyone more perfect for the role).

With regard to Zaphod's head, I believe I read in an interview that he does have one, but it's really small and as such is inside his nose! Here's hoping I'm remembering wrongly!

That trailer was kind of hokie (but not to death). However, I'm generally enthused about this because I know that Adam's was involved in a good amount of it's conceptualizing. Mos Def, which undoubtedly will frighten some nerds, is good for the part. He's had acting experience (http://imdb.com/name/nm0080049/) and those that have seen Chappelle's Show know that he can pull off some comedic roles. We know that Adam's writing is good, but we'll have to see how it translates to screen.

The American Version of the Trailer. Slightly different.

When I heard that they were partnering with an American film company, I thought "Okay, they'll have the wacky humor, awesome characters and great story line of the books along with American production quality." I was excited about this because (let's face it) English television and movies are crap. Generally speaking. But the trailer just seemed so damned... English.

Yeah, I know. English author, English humor. But clever writing alone doesn't necessarily make good movies.

I don't really know how to put this ambiguous "English" quality into words. I can only hope that someone understands what it is I'm rambling about. It's got something to do with the framing of shots, the quality of special effects, slightly clumsy editing, sterile camera work, and a general sense of just trying too hard, all rolled up into one. I don't know... maybe I've just seen too much public television.

Then there are the liberties the filmmakers took. Yeah, I know Adams had a hand in writing the screenplay before he died, but that doesn't stop the director and the art department from making whatever the hell changes they want. When I heard Warwick Davis was going to be Marvin, I was like... well, okay. A short, ping-pong ball headed Marvin. I guess that's all right. Mos Def was never an issue as Ford. But the shot in the trailer where Ford stuck his little golden thumb-ring into the air and shoots a yellow lazer-beam... I threw up a little in my mouth.

I'll still go see it. And if it really is bad... oh, well. There will always be the books.

The trailer which starts automatically there is different from the one you see if you click the "large trailer" button and choose extra large quicktime. Looks like the movie will be fun, might give Star Wars some competition. I still the the teaser trailer featuring Louis Armstrong was the best though:

Hmm... upon further contemplation I'm even more optimistic. I think this will be good.

Thanks for the link, that's a much better quality one. I take back what I said about the special effects, now. But the rest still stands. And yeah, I still like the teaser better, too.
