Do you know how many sites I went through originally to find ZC? I found one right off the bat it was: acidplay.com when I downloaded it and went to install it.. uh oh trojan horse! Thats how it was for EIGHT different sites! I was about to give up when I found zeldaclassic.com. I took a deep breath downloaded it installed it and hey hey! No Trojan or Virus! The only site I trust for ZC related is zeldaclassic.com and purezc.com! So if you havent downloaded the program yet and are just looking around for it, go to zeldaclassic.com no where else!

Has anybody else had this problem before?

Disgust! That sucks that you found contaminated files. :(

I always get my Zelda Classic stuff from ZeldaClassic.com and it's SUPERDUPER mirrors!

go to zeldaclassic.com no where else!
you know, you almost sound like a billboard... we already know about zc.com since its an extension of AGN... (*hint* -> http://zeldaclassic.armageddongames.net)

really though, it doesnt take a rocket scientist to find the real Zelda Classic website (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=zelda+classic&btnG=Google+Search)...

Why would anyone in their right fucking mind get ZC anywhere except the source?

It's like trying to have sex with your girlfriend by jacking into her brother....

I believe what the trojan is is a file with the Zelda classic download called thank.exe

I got this some 4 years ago when cnet had the 190 for download.
I never exicuted the file, and still have it in another folder.
It also came with "The Quest" another ode to Zelda.
The exact same exe file, plus it had an additional one called gate.exe.

Just delete it out, and you should be ok, DON'T Execute it :)

Why do people in their right mind download Zelda Classic elsewhere?
Because they find it there before they are aware of AGN.

Unfortunately, if it really boggles your mind, you might want to consider how much of your mind is actually there.:p

People download from misc. sites all the time. It's usually because the "home" site doesn't have the download(usually from being down and such), the "home" site isn't named after the program itself, or people just want a specific download, can't find it anywhere else, and just download from wherever.

Wo. I found ZC by being bored a few years ago, and upon finding zeldaclassic.com I didn't see any need to go to any others, not even its affiliates. Meh.

I originally had an old version of ZC when I was 9 and lived in England, my dad had downloaded it from somewhere but I don't know where. In september I was bored and thought that I should try to find some old games that I used to have, ZC was one of them. I did a google search on Zelda Classic and the first site I found was acidplay.com, after d/l-ing ZC from there I continued my search because I didn't know how to get ZC to work, that's when I found this site where I d/l-ed a more recent version of ZC and deleted the one I got off acidplay, now I find out what I almost got into...

searching for software on cnet download.com or tucows or whatever is fine. once you find something, though, go to the original site to download it. anyone who does differently is asking for it.

i mean, would you download the latest direct x from "skivey-porn-alley.ru/tugjobs/lol_getdirectxdude/" ? no, but some people wouldn't think twice about it, and assholes take advantage of these poor saps by putting bad copies of good software out there.

what i wonder is, is it possible for the author of a specific freeware program to refuse other sites the right to host it? you'd think that (even though you're not selling it) as the creator, you'd still have some rights to distribution.

I think an author can put that out there, and the request may be honored, but there's really nothing to prevent someone from putting the program on their site.

Maybe we should offer the MD5 hash or something too.

Don't download Zelda Classic 2.00, either. That's a virus of some sort on P2P networks (KaZaA, Gnutella, etc). :P

That's too bad. I'm all for freedom of information and all, but there should be some sort of limit. Oh well...

That's the usual solution to the problem, and an excellent one at that.
