Translucent Layers

I am having a problem. I'm going for a night screen, so I get a layer system all set up. You know, parallel maps and the like. Then, I put an entirely black screen on the highest layer, and set that layer to TRANS. Instead of just darkening like it did only once for me, it inverts and skews up colors.
Please help this poor confused soul.
