Sorry, lot of dumb questions here :scared:

What version should one download?

1.84 is the newest but does not contain ZQuest. And there is no download link for ZQuest. So should I grab 1.84 and 1.83?

Also, which quests will 1.84 be compatible with? Do you have to download each version of the player so you can play all of the quests?

Is there an easy way to check which versions a quest is compatible with? Or do you just have to start playing and see if there are bugs?

You probably should get the 192b183 and the 190

the 1.84 is very old and shouldn't be confused with the 192b184
if you're running xp then the 190 won't work for you, and most quests built with it can still be played on the 192b183 anyway.

Ok, I have more questions!

I was able to find two different zc190.zip files, with two different sizes. The contents of the zip files are also different sizes. :odd: Are the files in the Download on this section the official files? Should I delete the other zc190.zip files I found? FYI here is what I have currently:

zc190.zip (2822196 bytes) containing zc190.exe (11/1/2001 2862075 bytes)
zc190.zip (3457024 bytes) containing zc190.exe (4/6/2001 3641281 bytes)

I also found a zc190sr1.zip - does this mean service release? Should I install this on top of zc190? Does the zc190 here automatically contain this?

I think there have been a lot of changes without updating version numbers :(

FYI, I also have zc192b183w.zip and zc192b183d.zip. I assume that these are for Windows and DOS? Strangely, they are MUCH smaller than the zc192b183.zip distributed here. Should I keep them?

I have never heard of the zc190sr1 :odd: Anyways, go to http://www.zeldaclassic.com to get your files.

btw, ZC version 1.84 DID have Zquest with it. That's the first version of ZC that I used.

Sorry, I never meant to bring up 1.84 I meant to say 1.92b184

Looks like the download at www.zeldaclassic.com is zc190sr1.zip, so that must be the final version of 1.90.

Also, 99% of the quests in the quest database are for 1.90 or 1.92b183 so those two versions are the ones I'm going with. I have no idea what 1.92b184 is for.

The 192b184 is a more recent player (only) that fixes a couple of bugs, but replaces them with a couple of different bugs.
the 183 crashes if you view the overworld map more then once, boss lock blocks don't work, and it has some continue problems when link dies, these are fixed in the 184, but the 184 has some graphics problems with the bosses, like gleeok necks hover to the left side of the screen.

ok this is going to sound like the dumbest of dumb questions but as they say the only truly dumb question is one that isnt asked

anyways

Im really new to this and I downloaded zc192a184w.zip and I doubleclicked zelda-w and ya know armageddon games logo appeared then the whole register your name thing for the original zelda and all of that. I can play the orginial but my question is how do I play any custom quests. Im seeing in the help section of this site the whole register your name and get an error but Im not getting an error Im starting zelda1 (great game btw but Im curious about these new quests...they look really spiffy)

thanks in advance for helping a newb out :D

When you have started the program, the old Zelda 1[NES] "select file" subscreen should appear.
- Select a file with enter and write your name, then press enter again. (if any error messages appear, ignore them and get rid of them)
- To choose a quest to play, press A (unless you already chose your own set of keys, A will be the left "Alt" key).
- Push your A button again.
- Click "Browse". Find a custom quest file you want to play and click OK 2 times.
- Push your B button (by default: left "Ctrl")
- Then push enter and start playing.

I hope that was clear enough. :)
