Could be a bad bios setting perhaps? Try resetting those.

Why would it be something to do with the bios?

It could be the BIOS, you never know. Try flashing it or something. Or another idea is to MIN/MAX the computer, start disabling things one by one until you find what the problem is. Last resort is take it to a professional, it'll cost you a lot of money, they'll fix it and not tell you the problem so that you'll come back, and it takes like 3 days before they fix it... I hate pros... Anyways, just try some of those.

it could also be as simple as a scratched install disc

I've had problems before that said I had a whole bunch of missing files right after Windows 98 has finished installing. My problem was that when windows 98 finished putting the files and restarted for the first time, I would always remove the disk, thus it would go looking for more files when installation continued, and, after not finding any, just skipped it and gave me the errors afterwards.

Just make sure the disk is in there the whole time during installation.

If you get missing file errors, there's a utility called sfc that's called "system file checker". If you put that command in your "Run..." option in the start menu, you can use it to repair broken or missing files.

Just take the filename you are missing, put it in, and it will search your Windows 98 disk for the file.

Hope this helps. :)

OI m8... When I had computer problems back in the day, I got help like first post. Guess your life just sucks.
Uh, start it up in dos, and type format C:/
do it 12 times. :P
Uh, for actual relacance -
Try going to the microsoft homepage, and getting the files you need individually.

That's alright. And also, i suggested the BIOS, because i've had that problem personally, with windows 98, too.
