How to get ZC and custom quests working

In response to the seemingly 100's of new threads.....

How to get Zelda Classic working on your PC.
Start by downloading and unzipping all files into a new folder of their own, "ZCBeta" would be a good folder name.

Depending on what version you download, your files should look something like this;

(list of files for the 192b182 beta program)
182test.qst
1st.qst
2nd.qst
3rd.qst
ag.cfg
allegro.log
alleg41.dll
agsetup.exe
sfx.dat
zc192b182d.exe
zc192b182s.exe
zc192b182w.exe
zelda.dat
zelda.exe
zelda (shortcut)
zelda.sav
zelda-w.exe
zgp.dat
zquest.exe
zquest.txt
zquest-w.exe

Now that all these files are there with the exception of maybe the ag.cfg and the Allegro log you need to get the program to write those for you as well.
Double click on "zquest-w.exe", when ZQuest opens, click on ETC at the top right and play lost woods midi.
Click on ETC and turn the music off, and exit ZQuest by clicking on FILE then EXIT.

You should now be able to play the games.
Double click on "zelda-w.exe" and when the flames come up press "Enter" on your keyboard.
Press Enter again to pass the Zelda intro screen.
Register a name, and press enter and the first quest will be ready to play.
Enter the name "zelda" if you would prefer to play the second quest.

How to load custom quests in Zelda Classic

everytime I saved my quest custom from zquest and go to zelda classic, click one and end going to 1.qst all the time, what wrong here?

And what The "A" button do? I did and it not working, it the alt button I pressed and it not working anything at all, I used 184 player.

Everytime I saved my zquest and go to zelda classic, and load my saved zquest file and click and press enter, it going to the wrong files, always 1.qst everytimes, I did pressed alt twice, nothing happen...

Try starting a new file then pushing your "A" button twice. Your problem might exist because you have a game file in use with another quest (1st or 2nd maybe). Does that help you?

Which ever you use as your "A" button. The default is alt. For example my "A" button is 1.

it said "it not a custom quest" I mean it is custom quest i made, I don't get it....sometime I pressed A, sometime it work, sometime it won';t..

Make sure under your header for your quest that the quest version is zero. Zero stands for custom quest. If you use any other number the program will read it as a non custom quest (1st 2nd etc...).

well i made the tutorial quest, and tried to test it, it said "invalid quest file" what do i do!

you have to make sure that the min quest version doesn't exceed the quest version, 1.0 or higher and that the number above that is zero. when you go to the save as screen you have to answer those questions.
quest something or other [ 0 ] this one has to be zero
quest ver [ 1.0 ]
min quest ver [ 1.0 ] must be equal to or less than above
you also have to give it a name, after that it should load if you register a name and then press your a key and select it.

To unzip files, you can either use Windows Explorer (if you're using XP, hold in the Windows key and hit "E", then browse to the folder that the ZIP file is in, and then by clicking on it in the left window, you should be able to display the contents in the right window), or you can use a ZIP utility. I recommend Winzip. You can get an evaluation copy online if you need one.

I dont even understand where I am supposed to load my custom quest from. When I go to the load game screen there are two screens with five accounts 1st.quest Alpha demoex etc. Where do I load my custom game????Plz help.

I had this too but I solved after reading it. Go to the next page in the file selection. Make a new name. Then you press 'Alt' twice. Then you should be able to choose your file your own quest is in. It should called tutorial......Well, I should tutorial in it, if you name it something else then that something else will be there.

if u start ur quest and its freezes like u can't move, press f6, then it will say end game, say yes, the say continue, then try that a couple times, thats what worked for me

umm, when i try to load my custom quest, it says 'not a custom quest' why is that?? :odd: how do i fix it?

You're either trying to load the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd quest, or if it is indeed really YOUR custom quest that you made yourself, you set the quest number in the quest header to something besides zero, which you shouldn't have.

i got a problem also (im the ultimate noob to this lol)

Im using the windows version.

Problem 1: When I load anything zeldaclassic on full screen its all blurry (example:its all squiggly like when vatti appears in zelda: minish cap, except it doesnt stop)

Problem 2: I need to unzip files when i download quests of zeldaclassic.com right? if so how without downloading anything to unzip it(i have enough stuff on my computer as it is i dont need more :mad: )

Problem 3: Whenever I minimize the window in zeldaclassic and zquest editor I get the BLUE SCREEN OF DEATH!!!! (crashing screen)

1. You're using an LCD monitor, aren't you? LCD monitors get blurry when when set to low resolutions, and full screen ZC is about the lowest you'll ever get.

no i have a regular monitor but i use 16 bit true color and 800x600 resolution.

the blurry screen isnt a problem since i can use large window option. And ty for trying to help :D

When I first run the program, it gives me an error and sends me back to my desktop. Am I doing something wrong. This happens with the 182 build. The 163 build runs but When I try to save or load quests it gives me an internal error message. PLEASE HELP!!

Perhaps you need a new version of Allegro. I'd Google it and download the latest version, just in case. Check Google for "Allegro 4.1"

How do you make custom quests? I can't figure out how to animate anything. How do I make my own tile sets. How do I implement them?

to animate the tiles right click on the combo you want to animate and set the numbers in the A.frames and A.speed. , A.frames means the frames that the combo will use, A.speed means the speed of the animation 60=1 sec. the greater the number, the slower it runs. (i hope you don't get confused with this)

Please help! I'm using Win XP Pro sp2 at 1024 x 768 32-bit screen ( ZC 2.10 for windows and zc 1.90) and everything works fine for ZC and ZQuest - provided I don't try to Alt-Enter to swich to full screen mode. When in full screen, only the TOP HALF of the screen displays, and the bottom half is completely black. Is there something I can do to correct this easily? Thanks, peeps! - gryxzl

You might be trying to load a newer quest with an older player. What version of ZC do you have? Make sure that if you're using ZC 2.10, you're loading 2.10 quests (or previous). Similarly, 2.5 b1000 won't load a quest made for 2.5 b1001. You can load all custom quests with the very newest 2.5 build (shardstorm.com).
