View Full Version : Having Trouble Running ZC/Quest

I recently came across ZC, and was greatly overjoyed by the ability to create a custom Zelda quest with gfx straight from the SNES version! However...
I have downloaded and installed both the newest beta 1.92 "184" and the 1.90 183 "stable release" and the only gui that has opened was the midi config in the 1.90 release. Loading either zc or quest just brings be to an empty black screen, which only in 1.92 you can hear the fire crackle - press enter - and only hear the title music. The only way to exit the black screen is a ctrl-alt-del.
I am running Windows XP Pro, on a radeon 9600-m (laptop version)
I have also read a lot of past posts and topics, and there has been nothing there to aid me, all my files seem to be intact.
Please help.

190 is DOS, and XP doesn't support DOS.

to get the 192b183 to work......

How to get Zelda Classic working on your PC.
Start by downloading and unzipping all files into a new folder of their own, "ZCBeta" would be a good folder name.

Depending on what version you download, your files should look something like this;

(list of files for the 192b182 beta program)
182test.qst
1st.qst
2nd.qst
3rd.qst
ag.cfg
allegro.log
alleg41.dll
agsetup.exe
sfx.dat
zc192b182d.exe
zc192b182s.exe
zc192b182w.exe
zelda.dat
zelda.exe
zelda (shortcut)
zelda.sav
zelda-w.exe
zgp.dat
zquest.exe
zquest.txt
zquest-w.exe

Now that all these files are there with the exception of maybe the ag.cfg and the Allegro log you need to get the program to write those for you as well.
Double click on "zquest-w.exe", when ZQuest opens, click on ETC at the top right and play lost woods midi.
Click on ETC and turn the music off, and exit ZQuest by clicking on FILE then EXIT.

You should now be able to play the games.
Double click on "zelda-w.exe" and when the flames come up press "Enter" on your keyboard.
Press Enter again to pass the Zelda intro screen.
Register a name, and press enter and the first quest will be ready to play.
Enter the name "zelda" if you would prefer to play the second quest.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How to load custom quests in Zelda Classic
1) Double click on zelda-w.exe
2) Press "Enter" to pass the flames.
3) Press "Enter" to pass the Zelda intro screen.
4) register a name, and press enter.
5) press "A" (Alt)
6) Press "A" (Alt) again
7) browse to the quest you want to play, choose it and press "ok"
8) press "Enter" to play.
The above steps assume you have put the custom quest in the folder with Zelda Classic :O)

Is that "Play Lost Woods Music" thing really necessary? I've been able to play the games that I've made without ever doing that and there has never been any problems (except the quest design ones that I cause).

playing the music makes the program write an ag.cfg file, sometimes, and for some people, it seems necessary and other times it seems it's not.
If it's working for you, then it seems not. :)
For me it was.

Okay, I checked off the list of files you mentioned, here are the results:

Files missing or have possible alternate names (marked with "->")

agsetup.exe
ag.cfg -> allegro.cfg?
zelda.exe
zquest.exe
zc192b182d.exe
zc192b182s.exe
zc192b182w.exe

files not mentioned that could have an effect:

grabber-w.exe
zcmusic.dll

I downloaded from the zc main site from one of the mirrors - i will try a different mirror and see what I get.
>>BTW the mirror that gave me that junky zip was "afterblur.com"

Edit:

All of the mirrors give me the same files, so i would doubt all of the mirrors have the wrong files.
So, what should i do - with the files I have nothing works correctly.

You need the support files.
try those download sites again and see if you just overlooked them.

Believe me, Ive looked through each zip archive, as well as the support files posted on the ZC Download page, still missing the same files that you mentioned...
Can anyone find me a link to the files, or a complete .zip/rar archive?
