I got this mad crazy idea: I'm gonna post some screeshots in a screenshot thread :o

These are all from ZTD. I spent last night, and part of today remaking level three from scratch. I wanted to include some screens with shallow, and deep dungeon water, but you can't really tell with these still shots. Yup, you guessed it, no quest would be complete without a water-level-shifting dungeon. Even a classic quest. There are also shots of the desert area, and some random Triforce rooms, and some random overworld shots that I thought were kinda eye pleasing.

I was gonna post some shots from my 'real' quest, but I decided not to. It is not even remotely playable as is anyway. ZTD is playable, but it was easier to cap these from the editor for now.

I am in love with that first overlook screen.

Anyways, they are all very, very good for classic. Nice work!

I also have an unexciting video of the first mini dungeon. (Video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cmK_HxqdJMk))

My only suggestion is to get rid of the blocks on the overlook and out in mountain tiles instead. Otherwise, it's classic at it's best. :)

Ah, thanks russadwan! This gets my hopes back =) I hope I do a great job and don't quit in the middle (or beginning, or end). I've got a bit of reading and playing around with the new build before I can start.

LOL, and most of what joe has released is for the 2.10 and the one thing for the betas he has released comes with this warning

Heh, not untrue.
I have done a lot of work in 2.5 that's not really released though.
I've spent hours just writing scripts for other people

But that warning is fine by me really.
It's not perfect, but it's a workaround.
There are no other (well, not that I've noticed) system bugs that affect that game, and if that's the only one, it's not too painfull.

So then it is true, I said released, not work done.
2.5 is still extremely buggy, don't kid yourself. ;)

Well yes, but I've still put many hours into working on 2.5, you might think that counts for nothing but I don't personally

2.5 is buggy in some respects, but you can work around it.
You showed how I have.

Yeah, they are more or less placeholders until I make something else, or finally get around to doing layers. They do look a bit weird with the way the kinda join the sky.

I have a few more screens from the game's "fire/ lava" dungeon. I didn't really plan to do motifs for each dungeon, but after redoing level three and making a "water dungeon", I figured I might as well do something graphical to make them interesting :D

http://img291.imageshack.us/img291/6492/promoreel3wx1.gif

Image 1: Outside the fire temple. It resides deep beneath these "hot spring" type things here.

Images 2, 3, and 4: Inside some of the newer, and more interesting rooms in the dungeon.

Image 5: Random shot form level one showing the nice contrast between light blue, and orange. I like it.

I didn't realize most of these shots showed crusted lava. It is new. Well, it's probably for the better since people are probably sick of seeing my super bright lava anyway :D

These are some test screens show casing my new tile set. It is a very layer-intensive set, since they can produce such nice, varied results. I'm aware that the grass isn't great, but it stays. It's sure beats the green solid Pure grass, and I'm getting sick of seeing every other quest use that SD3 grass. This set is a mix of old and new. Most tiles are edits, but there are a few originals in the set. If you can't tell, this started out as Descendant Set. It is on of the best, and underused set out there. It was Pure before Pure... So.. Maybe these screens look familiar, but I'm not one to work on, and juggle multiple projects at once you know.

Russ

I love it! The original Pure is one of my favorite sets (mainly because of the nastolgia), and that brings back that nastolgia while adding detail and new tiles. Suberb work!

http://img223.imageshack.us/img223/5702/firstthreedungeonsqn7.gif

Tiny maps of the first three dungeons. The first two are completely finished save for some minor graphic tweaks (palette changing when a room darkens etc.) The third dungeon is not done. It is made up of two sections. As you can see, there is a traditional section, and a side scrolling section. The traditional section is all sketched in, but only about half of the rooms are done. The side scrolling part is also on the better side of half way done.

I also made up some palettes. The ones before were.. eye sores, quite frankly. These ones are more subtle, and less likely to cause monitor, and retinal damage.

So.. I have been doing stuff believe it or not.

EDIT:

http://img136.imageshack.us/img136/8576/level6debutvy2.gif

After a good day of work, Level six is finished. I did this entire dungeon in one day, so it's safe to say it could use a bit more detail here and there, but the meat and bones of it are finished. This brings the total number of completed dungeons to 3.

Let me explain a bit about this dungeon. This is specifically designed to be this quest's "imfamous" dungeon. It is long, and hard with tough battles, and a fairly complex maze-y-warp-y layout. There are a few different ways to beat this dungeon, but you'll want to get the map and compass ASAP.

I think it is safe to name this nasty mo' fo' "Midnight Maze".

Level three is still in the works, level four is kept from the old game, but needs some serious work (It has some serious warping issues, because when it was built way back when, I put in the map screen for warps, and not the d-map screen.. anywho..), level five is yet to be built along with levels seven, eight, and nine. I have seven all planned out, so I'll probably do it tomorrow. I will eventually finish Level three (which is so far, my personal favorite). Four and five come next. Then we'll see where it goes from there.

The cracked ground tiles stand out a bit too much, IMO. I thought they were some sort of rain, or something o.o I would make then dark brown instead of black, and make another tile of it flipped for some variation.

Yeah, but there are two reasons they are spam'd in in there. One, I like the colors, and two, I don't care for the DoR versions of the GB trees :D

With just about any early side project, no tiles have been ripped or modified. All that you see is out of the box, and un-altered. If this project really picks up (more so after ZTD) maybe I'll change it up, or add the old GB trees.

And now, for some completely random Zelda TD w.i.p. shots:

http://img371.imageshack.us/img371/3116/paletteshowep3.gif

Images 1-3:
An optional cave area. This is not the final layout, palette, or level of detail. I need to modify some mountains, and make a nice, muted c-set for the water. This area will use the "Wispewind Cave" them from Final Fantasy Dawn of Souls. I also need some ground details other than rocks.

Image 4:
'Coppery' palette for Level 4. Subject to change, but I like it. I'm taking the classic set to a darker, and more natural looking set of colors. The bright pastels are nice in moderation, but man, after looking at some colors, it was very intense.

Image 5:
Purple palette for the Midnight Maze (Level 6). I may make it a bit darker, but I still like it.

Image 6:
Early Level 7 palette. It was hard to get those sandy golds and yellows. Subject to change, but unlikely.

Image 7:
Oops. I seem to have miscounted. There is no seventh image.

Sorry, it is purely coincidence. You can only make the same thing look so many ways without deviating too much. If you don't believe me, I can send you the .qst file :\

I think this area could use some work though. There are some cases in the original where things are a little too bare, even for being an open NES game. This area probably won't change much since it was a bit of work to get it this far, but I dunno. It isn't quite up to my expectations.

EDIT: Here is something to consider with the oasis'. I'm going to guess you started with the upper-left most screen too? Tell me if you had a similar train of though: Okay, there was one screen done, but how can I make this second desert screen different? Oh, I know, I'll add an oasis. Not bad. However, are those long block segments supposed to be columns? If they are, it really makes them look flat, as you really won't see them from that perspective. It also seems that the stairway suffers from the same problem; "stacking" the blocks should solve that problem as well. Oh, and the transition from the walls to the sky could use a dark blue instead of black - Unless you are already using all the level colors, however.

If you're talking about the ones below the bridge, then yes. Above, no, they are just there, and I'm not entirely happy that part of the screen. It is supposed to be something like an island suspended above the room. Kind of like climbing up onto a crystal. I may end up doing some custom stuff for it, but I dunno. I will probably make a tile for the "edge" of the bridge; see my lava/ water for examples. As for the black borders, yeah, I already tried. I would have to recolor, and re combo the tiles used for that effect. I might do it though, as it will look better, and it is only two tiles.

Ok. I went ahead and used a transparent color, and layers. I think it looks a little better, but it seems a bit odd. Kind of like the walls disappear into a floating oblivion. Oh well. Also, awkward columns removed. I didn't realize how off they looked until I really looked at the screen.

New Level 4 .

I think it looks better than the stacked dungeon entrance tiles. That looks great! It fits right into the classic tileset. Nice palette also. :)

I like the sky. I also like the NES styled Red Brinstar. I also like the bubbles.

The only thing I don't like is how I can't play it :[ The only real suggestions I have are add some more stuff to the fourth and fifth screens to break up the black.

King Aquamentus

I was thinking about preparing a demo and putting it through to AGNX but there's some work I have to do... closing off places that currently lead nowhere, fixing issues with enemies (lv. 3 stalfos are in the brinstar swamps for their 3-way capabilities and still need to be toned down to a level you can actually fight them at with just power beam and power suit. Same with Bats...

As for the shots? Maaayybe for the fifth. Makes it look slightly less like the original game. Not sure about that Norfair shot... the dark cavern feel to it is kinda sexy...

say... you know why I did it like this? Kept black as primarily the background, and had everything work off of that? That way I wouldn't have to set under combos and secret combos on everything!! XD They all show up as walkable black squares by default! XD But, I do think it looks kinda nice like this, too... And it did prompt me to make a dark sky variant of Crateria's skyline... and that awesome line of sunlight breaking the clouds, that Anthus seems to enjoy so much... (inspired by Chrono Trigger)

Anthus

Wow, Old-Skool, you're really going to town on this. I understand the reasons for using a black background. It is always easier to work on stuff, and get things done if it is a self limiting art style. That is why ZTD has gone further than any other project.

I'm curious, is that Botwoon a modified Gleeok, or is it something different?

King Aquamentus
02-04-2009, 07:49 PM
Plus, the color lends itself well to the series while still allowing some room for backgrounds that are just minimalist, which the new shots help show.

Also, that's the Crateria cave, just a few screens left of the gunship, but look at the background. As the demo implies, this planet is artificial.

Not so much a quest, but just something I've been working on for no real reason in particular. Not sure about what will become of it, if anything, but it's fun

Also yes, the hillsides are incomplete. However, they are stylized like Minish Cap's (With a perspective fix on the back-facing sides. They're not finished in the fact that I don't have caves or ladders for them, and because I plan to make diagonal faces as well

sorry I didn't notice this question before...

http://i511.photobucket.com/albums/s352/Festus_05/zelda050.png

Botwoon is actually a modified Moldorm. Misc Attribute #1 controls the number of body segments for both Lanmolas and Moldorms. From here, I boosted his stats a little and made him move much faster.

Oh wow, that's pretty cool.

I like the look of what you're doing with this metroid quest.
Obviously I'm all for scripting, but it's nice to see what people can do without it awell.

I thought that boss was a Gleeok too actually.

King Aquamentus
02-07-2009, 02:50 PM
I'm not totally against scripting, but I haven't found much need for it yet. It's still very much "Hey look what I can do just by screwing around in Zquest!" And I think that has a novelty to it.

I've also created a Lanmola enemy inspired by the charge beam guardian in Zero Mission. He sits up in Crateria, acting as the miniboss for that area and guarding the elevator to Brinstar's subterranean jungle. What's more, I've been able to pull off Metroid style boss rooms using some screen flags, room state carryovers, and timed warps. What this means is, the first time you enter a "boss room" (a room in which you can't continue until a boss is defeated), you will be warped to an identical room that has a boss in it and some boss music. If you defeat this boss, secret flags will produce direct warps taking you back to the first incarnation of the room, still playing the quiet "ddeeee deeeeee deeeee deeee" tune. because of room state carryovers, You will not be whisked back into the boss room, nor will you be ever again, no matter how many times you visit this room.

So, people do look at this thread :p

This is the northern part of a 16x16 overworld I'm making. there's more done now, and part of the south has been done too. I'm just working in this in the mean time, since I'm waiting on some paper work, and stuff. I am liking it way more than ZTD's overworld. In fact, most of ZTD's overworld is kinda crap. It was made over five years ago, and it shows especially next to the newer areas :o

Allusions, allusions...

Were it not for the fact that it's a Sunday and I still have homework to do, I'd be compelled to just open up ZQuest and mess around with the Classic set and create something along the lines of that. I particularly like the waterfall area and the orange-ish mountain area, but really all of it is just fun to look at (and, hopefully, to play through).

Good shot there, I like your idea of a screen with enhanced Classic tiles. I can point out the goods and the bads of this shot according to my tastes.

The Good :):
Enhanced Classic tiles (as said above).
Nice choice of pallet.
Good layout.

The Bad :(:
Waaay too much contrast between the black and white ground.

Not so :confused::
The perspective that some of the trees use.

Overall, this looks good but you could darken the white or lighten up the black a little bit and try changing the perspective that some of the trees use. Thats my 2 cents rupees.

Edit: how do you put striked-out letters. I tried, but it came out broken.
Edit2: Thanks Spyk, those letters now came out correct

Another rehash at my last subscreen. What do you all think?
The dark space in the upper half is where the triforce pieces would go in the overworld, but where the dungeon mini-map would go when you're in a dungeon.
In the lower passive subscreen, I eliminated the sword button icon, because, we all know you're going to be carrying the sword around 24/7 so why visualize it? So the only icon you see up is the B button item, alongside the counters. In the middle is the mini-map plus the title of it.
Some say it may clash with the GB tileset, but I personally like it. It makes the colored items pop out more. Anyway, it isn't a screenshot of a quest per sey, but it is an image from a quest. :P
