I have a question(who doesn't?), why is it that I am listed as a newcomer when I've been registered for a number of months? And how does one get a higher rank?

it is all in how many post you have...not how long you have been here...

There's a list of official Ranks somewhere in the "Official Announcements" forum, pinned at the top. You may wish to look in there. ;)

And newcomer is only a title for the number of posts that you have. You can have under 50 posts for twenty years, and still be a newcomer. You advance every 50, 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, .. 700.. 800, .. I dunno.
