It is quite rare that I pay any attention whatsoever to a commercial. It does happen, though. I'm sure advertisers are aware that most people will disregard the ads prior to spending the money to get their ads put on TV/radio/etc.

Generally advertising doesnt work on me. BTW United Furniture Wearhouse (bam bam) is the bes commercial in the world :P. New commercials now adays try to hard to be stupid funny and it neevr works. I especially hate those stupid commercials that dont even tell you what the hell they are about.

Sometimes, seeing commercials only makes me not want to buy that product more. They're wasting my valuable Television time. Unless the commercial is really funny, they're just wasting their time with me. .. Of course, that's if I was the only one watching those, but since there are more, I just don't care.

Honestly, I don't think anyone sees a comercial and says "Wow, I am going to go buy that product right now!!". But after seeing a comercial enough times you know the company better and may actually be swayed to buy from them. Take, for instance, United Furniture Warehouse. Nearly everyone in this thread knows them and their commerical. That, friends, is effective advertising.

The only "working" that advertising does to me is to make me want to pick up a chainsaw and hunt advertising representives.

Except in some cases.

Like that Brawny commercial. The two paper towels are talking about a soap opera. Pure gold.

In most cases, if you don't know what it's for, it's probably Viagra. (the pills are at least- anyone see the Cialis commercials during the Super Bowl?)

anyhow, advertising is all about "building awareness". Just as gdorf said, we all probably now know about UFW, wheras if they didn't have a commercial, it'd be "what's that???".

I've never heard of United Furniture Warehouse. I guess they aren't in my area. We do have another furniture outlet called Raymour and Flanigan that has commercials that are probably equally retarded.

Advertising does work. Many don't realize that it actually does work on them even though it may seem as though it does not.

Many of you have this conception that advertising is meant to make you run out and buy the product; that's not the case. The whole reason behind witty commercials and jingles that get stuck in your head is to have you recognize the name, so that next time you're at the mechanic/grocery store/adult video shop you'll think, "Hey, it's [insert product name here]! I should pick that up instead of the generic stuff!" Obviously, that doesn't happen often, but the fact remains that you recognize the name of the product.

So yeah, it does work, even if you don't realize it. The fact that you are complaining about irritating commercials for that furniture place proves my point - you remembered the name.

I've had millions of classes on advertising and such so I can recognize thier tricks and crap, thats another reason why the dont affect me. The only advertisement that works on me is seeing the acctual product, when ever I walk into a store and see something new I go "I might try that". (writing extreme on the product does not make me want it) oh and word of mouth.

And Im the conspiracy theorist? =P

.... Must ... buy... Brawny...

Seriously. When an advertisement works on that level, its awesome. But some of the stuff is so stupid that regardless of whether or not you remember the name, it sucks.

no, advertising dosen't work for me, unless it's about the following

-it's about a upcoming game that I'm interested in
-it's about a new episode of a show I like to watch
-it has food in it
