I have not had an up-to-date computer capable of running recent computer games (none of them had hardware acceleration) until now. I am now going to purchase a 2.4 ghz computer with 512mb of RAM and an ATI Radeon 9600 XT Which means, I dont want to be bleeding edge, jsut something that's adequite for games of today.

Which brings me to my question. Since around 1998, I have been missing out on almost all PC games made since then.

What are your suggestions about what I should pick up? So far, I have Quake 3 Arena and Unreal Tournament 2K4, Neverwinter Nights, and depending on if it runs wel enough, Halo PC (I heard it was basically pot luck if it ran wel on a computer or not, but I'm willing to give the demo a spin to see if it does) on my list of "games to get". Also, almost all of my friends play Warcraft III, so I'll probably buy that too, if not new than from a friend who doesn't play it anymore. I already have a copy of Diablo II that I'll finally be able to run, as well as Half Life (It ran, but not well enough).

So, anything else? What have I been missing out on?

Half Life 2, World Of Warcraft (When it comes out), and Gunbound. Also I'd try and get about a Gig of Ram because soon enough, you're gonna need it. And it's cheap. ;)

Be sure to get Frozen Throne (War 3 expansion) as well :D

Also, this game is a little old (2000) but I absolutely loved Giants: Citizen Kabuto. I would definately recommend that. That game absolutely rocked. It's among my favorite PC games. Since it's old you can probably get it cheaper now too, so there ya go ;)

I'd say Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind. I staggered through it on my older PC, and am now enjoying it much more, the way it was meant to be played, on my new one. It is one of my all time favorite games, and its graphics are beautiful.

GunBound. I'm hooked. And it's free.

Just when I think I'm over it... you remind me about it. Now I have to play again. Thanks a lot.

They're not going to push your uber-PC (uber/super compaired to mine anyway) but:

Baldurs Gate 2: Shadows of Amn/Throne of Bhaal
System Shock 2
Thief: The Dark Project
Planescape: Torment
Worms World Party (OR Worms Armageddon, they're about the same)
Fallout Tactics: Brotherhood of Steel
Gunman Chronicles (Basically a huge, stand-alone Half-Life mod, but still good)

From what I have seen of Thief 2, I like it better than Thief 1. No Zombies. My interest in the game declined a great deal when I saw the zombies. But both are still excellent games that I would highly reccomend.

Halo PC - Runs good with updates. Radeon 8500/9000 owners should use "-use14" to get better graphics. Radeon 9500+ owners should use "-use20".
Far Cry - Sucks as a game but what a nice graphics engine. Can't wait to make maps for it.
Chrome - Not a bad game if you like to be challenged. Nothing special but a regular 3D shooter.
Natural Selection mod for Half Life - Much better than Counter Strike and really uses the microphone.
Battlefield 1942 - Just a good online game.
