View Full Version : What an odd oath...

With the wedding coming fast in two weeks, me and amber got our marriage liscence the other day, after filling out all the stuff and making sure everything was spelled right, we had to rise our right hand and swear an oath.

Pretty standard stuff: do you swear you didn't lie, is all this the truth, are you of legal age, blah blah blah, then they threw one in there.

Do you swear that you are not cousins.

And it made me smirk.

Now, I wonder, is that a standard thing, or was it because amber was born in west virginia?

It's all cause she's a West Virginian... ;) j/k

I would guess it's just a standard thing. They're asking you to swear that the two of you are legally entitled to marry each other, and that's one of the prerequisites.

Or maybe you should find someone who just got married in Utah, and ask if they had to swear they're not already married. ;)

It could be a WV thing, but then they would have

Do you swear you arent Father/Daughter

Do you swear that you arent marrying a farm animal

:D

You could always ask mike&catherine if they had to swear the same thing. I still say it's the west virginia thing.
